Black screen after turning on the computer
Defective video cable (VGA, DVI, HDMI) or monitor.
Perhaps the reason that the computer turns on and a black screen hangs on the monitor is a faulty video cable.
It is of three types:
In order to test this theory, you need to connect the system unit using this cable not to the monitor, but to the TV. Or just borrow a known working cable from a friend.
By the way, the computer monitor is checked in the same way.
- Defective video card.
This reason also causes a black screen when the computer is turned on.
Computer dust cleaning required.
Computer does not turn on black screen
Today I would like to discuss with you the reasons why the computer turns on, but there are no images on the monitor. In other words, “there is a black screen”.
The black screen when you turn on the computer is not always the same. It can be divided into 3 parts:
- Black screen due to poorly plugged power connectors for the monitor, both into the outlet and into the monitor itself, or the monitor is poorly connected to the computer with a cable.
- Black screen immediately after you press the power button. That is, the monitor turned on, but there are no initial motherboard splash screens, inscriptions and numbers just before the operating system boots. This is a hardware problem. Most often, in this case, the sign “No signal” hangs. It is also possible that the computer starts beeping. The signals can be different. Below, we will analyze in more detail how to restore the computer to work.
- The computer turns on as usual, there is an initial screen saver for the motherboard, (not all computers should have one, so do not be alarmed) inscriptions, numbers are running, and after all this stuff, the usual boot of the system begins. After that, a black screen just hangs, and sometimes a black screen with a cursor. The appearance of a blue screen of death is possible. This problem is most likely of the software level and it can be easily eliminated, except in cases when the hard disk has come to an end and the computer SIMply cannot read information from it.
Problem program or driver.
This reason, due to which the computer turns on and then a black screen appears, is fundamentally different from all the above and below described. The fact is that the problem is most likely at the software level. Remember what you did the last time the computer worked? Perhaps you downloaded something, installed or uninstalled something. A black screen with a cursor most often occurs when the video card driver is damaged. In order to correct this misunderstanding, you should enter Safe Mode. To do this, restart your computer and as soon as it starts to turn on, press F8 again. The launch menu will open in front of you. It can look differently. (it depends on what system is on your computer)
This is how this menu looks on Windows 7.
After the computer has booted into safe mode, you need to do a system restore. An article on how to do it correctly is here.
If the computer does not boot in safe mode, then there are 2 options:
- The damage to the system is too global (in this case, you should save all the data on the computer using a live CD and reinstall the system. But before doing this, you should check the hard disk for errors and fix them. (If possible) It is also possible that after bug fixes. the system will start as usual.)
- Hard drive problem (read the article below)
Hard drive problem.
A black screen on the computer monitor may also indicate that something is wrong with the hard drive. To check and try to fix the malfunctions, the Victoria4.46b program is used. The video below describes in great detail and shows how the program works. I will only add that in order to recover bad sectors (errors), you will need to put the switch in the Remap position before starting the test.
By the way, the video shows how to check the hard drive while the operating system is working. But Windows doesn’t work for us. In order to check the HDD without loading the system, we need to write the Victoria 4.46b program to disk in a special way (the Internet is full of instructions on how to do this) and boot not from the hard disk, as we usually do, but from the disk where Victoria is located. How to boot from disk read here.
Black screen reasons.
Below I will write absolutely all the reasons due to which a black screen comes out when the computer is turned on, and then we will consider each of them in detail.
- Computer dust cleaning required.
- Defective video cable (VGA, HDMI, DVI) or monitor.
- Defective video card.
- Problem program or driver.
- Hard drive problem.
- Other hardware problems.
Now, let’s look at each of these reasons in order. Go!
Other hardware problems.
If you, one by one, tried all the methods described in this article and nothing helped you, then most likely there was a serious hardware failure. You should take the computer to a service center for diagnostics. Experts will check everything and tell you which part should be replaced.
This is where my article comes to its logical conclusion. I hope she helped you remove the black screen from your computer monitor. Thank you for attention! Good luck!
Remove conflicting drivers on the laptop and replace with working ones
What to do. Boot Windows into Safe Mode and remove conflicting drivers. Go to the developer’s website and download the latest drivers for your operating system version. Instructions on how to do it.
It also makes sense to contact the developers with this problem or look for a solution to your problem on the video card developers forum. Judging by the description of your problem, the black screen on the laptop is caused precisely by the driver conflict.
Laptop matrix not working
Your monitor may not work. that is, the laptop matrix is out of order. It can be replaced by specialists in a service center or in a repair shop in your city.
Check if the hard drive is detected in the laptop BIOS
If the laptop does not boot and you still see a black screen, try going into the BIOS (if it boots) and check if the hard (SSD) drive is detected.
Clean your laptop from dust
Finally, one more tip: If your laptop is noisy when booting up, dust it off. Sometimes computer overheating directly affects the success of Windows boot.
Use Safe Mode to boot your laptop
I went to reboot the laptop, everything is fine with the Windows icon, but the black screen, I wanted to reinstall Windu, I chose it from the flash drive. all ok but again a black screen. I pulled out the battery, tried to return Windu to its normal state, knocked out an error. What to do if your laptop screen won’t turn on?
Symptom: When you turn on the laptop, you see the Windows logo, but as soon as the boot is completed, a black screen with a cursor appears. The desktop is not displayed, while you can go to the task manager.
What to do. A small but effective method if you cannot restore the boot of the operating system on a laptop. use Windows Safe Mode.
You can activate it after initializing the BIOS, before loading the operating system. After turning on the computer, hold down the F8 key on the keyboard. Among the additional boot options, you can choose the Safe Mode itself or its variants.
Black screen when turning on laptop. what to do?
If your laptop does not turn on and you see a black screen after booting, this is not a reason to run to a service center. In this article. tips on what to do if this blackest screen appears when your laptop starts up. We hope that after reading you will find the correct solution to this problem.
Contact the service center
All of the above actions make sense to perform only if you have special skills in laptop maintenance. Otherwise, contact a reliable specialist.
Reinstall the operating system on the laptop
Symptom: example of a situation:
What to do. That is, the computer turns on and successfully comes to loading the operating system. Most likely no hardware problems are observed.
If a black screen appears on a laptop when Windows starts, we recommend reinstalling the operating system. this is the best way to restore the boot.
To do this, just use a Windows 10 boot disk or a USB flash drive. The best utility for writing a USB flash drive, in our opinion. Rufus.
Remove the laptop cover and check the fastening of the RAM modules
We advise you to check the tightness of the connection of the RAM modules with the slots of the laptop: if the RAM bar has moved away from the motherboard, it is quite possible that the computer will not turn on.
Black screen when turning on laptop. It can say a lot.
Hello dear users of personal computers! Today I decided to write an article on what actions should be taken if, when turning on the laptop, the black screen of the monitor does not want to change to the system startup. First, let’s try to figure out the reasons for the trouble, then. in solving the problem.
The first reason most often turns out to be a breakdown of the video card. If this important part of the computer fails, you will constantly observe a black screen when you boot the laptop.
The next reason may be a malfunction of the north / south bridge on the motherboard.
Memory failures or a complete lack of RAM can also result in the black screen not changing to the welcome screen when the laptop is turned on. By the way, this reason is quite common.
If, when you turn on the laptop, a black screen appears with shades of gray, then, most likely, the first thing the service specialists will check the loop and the matrix, after which they will find a malfunction of any connector.
If your machine often overheats or is incorrectly positioned in the workplace, which can also lead to a single heating, then the power supply may SIMply burn out.
When you turn on the laptop, a black screen can SIMply inform you that the insides of the car are in dire need of a “general cleaning”.
In fact, there are very, very many reasons for the breakdown or failure of the laptop monitor. It can be a battery, and system malfunctions, virus attacks, sticking of the monitor button (in certain models it is turned on separately), and so on.
A laptop is a rather complex mechanism. And if, before purchasing it, you were a user of an ordinary desktop PC, which you could go through for hours, then everything is not so SIMple here. You can try to fix the problem on the spot on your own, but you should not get carried away with it.
Try an emergency method, that is, by holding the power button for a long time, turn off the machine and, after waiting for a certain time (about fifteen minutes), turn it on again. Time is needed for all parts to cool down. When you turn on the laptop, the black screen continues to stand on its?
Disconnect the battery and try turning on the computer directly from the mains. If the problem has disappeared, then everything is immediately clear. True, the reason may not always be a breakdown of the battery itself, sometimes it’s just an elementary lack of powering the screen itself. You can also try giving the battery an hour and a half charge from an alternative power source.
The third stage of self-elimination of the causes of breakdown
If your laptop model belongs to those in which the monitor starts working after turning on a certain button, and the machine works from a separate one, check the health of the button.
After completing all the above steps, the black screen did not disappear when starting the laptop? It is still worth contacting the service center. Experienced craftsmen will diagnose the machine and the system, and they will identify the causes much more accurately and faster than you yourself. After all, you must agree that any work of the master is afraid!
Using integrated video
If you have an output for connecting a monitor not from a discrete video card, but on the motherboard, try turning off the computer, connecting the monitor to this output and turning on the computer again.
There is a good chance (if the integrated adapter is not disabled in UEFI) that after enabling, you will see an image on the screen and be able to roll back the discrete video card drivers (through the device manager), install new ones, or use system restore.
Restart Windows 10
One of the working ways to fix the problem with a black screen after re-enabling Windows 10, which seems to be quite workable for owners of AMD (ATI) Radeon graphics cards, is to completely restart the computer and then disable the fast startup of Windows 10.
In order to do this blindly (two methods will be described), after booting the computer with a black screen, press the Backspace key several times (left arrow to delete a character). this will remove the lock screen saver and remove any characters from the password input field if you they were accidentally introduced there.
After that, switch the keyboard layout (if required, by default in Windows 10 it is usually Russian, you can switch it almost guaranteed with the Windows Spacebar keys) and enter your account password. Press Enter and wait for the system to boot.
The next step is to restart your computer. To do this, press the Windows key (key with the logo) R on the keyboard, wait 5-10 seconds, enter (again, you may need to switch the keyboard layout if you have Russian by default): shutdown / r and press Enter. After a few seconds, press Enter again and wait about a minute, the computer will have to restart. it is quite possible that this time you will see an image on the screen.
The second way to restart Windows 10 with a black screen is after turning on the computer, press the Backspace key several times (or you can use a space or any symbol), then press the Tab key five times (this will take us to the on / off icon on the lock screen), press Enter, then. the “Up” key and again Enter. After that the computer will restart.
If none of these options allow you to restart your computer, you can try (potentially dangerous) force shutting down your computer by holding down the power button for a long time. And then turn it back on.
If, as a result of the above, the image appears on the screen, then the matter is precisely in the operation of the video card drivers after a quick start (which is used by default in Windows 10) and to avoid a repetition of the error.
Disable Windows 10 Fast Startup:
- Right-click on the Start button, select Control Panel, and in it. Power Options.
- On the left, select Power Button Actions.
- At the top, click “Change options that are currently unavailable”.
- Scroll down and uncheck “Enable Fast Startup”.
Save your changes. The problem should not repeat itself in the future.
Black screen in Windows 10
If after updating or installing Windows 10, as well as after rebooting an already successfully installed system, you are greeted with a black screen with a mouse pointer (and possibly without it), in the article below I will tell you about possible ways to fix the problem without resorting to reinstalling the system.
The problem is usually caused by NVidia and AMD Radeon graphics card drivers not working properly, but this is not the only reason. As part of this instruction, we will consider the case (the most common recently) when, judging by all the signs (sounds, computer operation), Windows 10 boots, but nothing is displayed on the screen (except, possibly, the mouse pointer), it is also possible option when a black screen appears after sleep or hibernation (or after turning off and then turning on the computer). Additional options for this problem in the instructions Windows 10 does not start. First, a few quick solutions for common situations.
- If at the last shutdown of Windows 10 you saw the message Wait, do not turn off your computer (updates are being installed), and when you turn on you see a black screen. just wait, sometimes updates are installed this way, this can take up to half an hour, especially on slow laptops (Another symptom the fact that this is precisely the case. the high load on the processor caused by the Windows Modules Installer Worker).
- In some cases, the problem may be caused by a connected second monitor. In this case, try to disable it, and if it did not work, then go into the system blindly (described below, in the section about rebooting), then press the WindowsP (English) keys, once the down key and Enter.
- If you see a login screen and a black screen appears after login, then try the next option. On the login screen, click on the on-off button at the bottom right, and then, while holding Shift, click “Restart”. In the menu that opens, select Diagnostics. Advanced Options. System Restore.
If you encounter the described problem after removing a virus from your computer, and you see a mouse pointer on the screen, then the following guide will most likely help you: Desktop does not load. what to do. There is another option: if the problem appeared after changing the structure of partitions on the hard disk or after damage to the HDD, then a black screen immediately after the boot logo, without any sounds, may be a sign of the volume unavailability with the system. Read more: Inaccessible_boot_device error in Windows 10 (see the section about the changed partition structure, despite the fact that the error text is not shown for you, this may be your case).
Removing and reinstalling video card drivers
If the previous method did not work, you should try to remove the video card drivers from Windows 10. You can do this in safe mode or in low-resolution mode, and I will now tell you how to get into it, seeing only a black screen (two ways for different situations).
First option. On the login screen (black) press Backspace several times, then. Tab 5 times, press Enter, then. once up and holding Shift, again Enter. Wait about a minute (the diagnostics, recovery, system rollback menu will load, which you probably won’t see either).
- Down three times. Enter. down two times. Enter. left two times.
- For computers with BIOS and MBR. down once, Enter. For computers with UEFI. down twice. Enter. If you do not know which option you have. press “down” once, and if you get into the UEFI settings (BIOS), then use the option with two clicks.
- Press Enter again.
The computer will restart and show you the special boot options. Using the number keys 3 (F3) or 5 (F5) to start Low Resolution Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. Once booted, you can either try to run System Restore in the Control Panel, or remove the existing video card drivers, and then restart Windows 10 in normal mode (the image should appear) and reinstall them. (see Installing NVidia Drivers for Windows 10. for AMD Radeon the steps will be almost the same)
If this method of booting the computer for some reason does not work, you can try the following option:
- Log in to Windows 10 with a password (as described at the beginning of the instructions).
- Press WinX keys.
- Press up 8 times, and then. Enter (the command line will open as administrator).
At the command prompt, type (must be in English): bcdedit / set safeboot network and press Enter. After that, enter shutdown / r press Enter, after 10-20 seconds (or after a sound alert). Enter again and wait until the computer restarts: it should boot into safe mode, where you can remove the current video card drivers or start a system restore. (In order to return the normal boot later, use the bcdedit / deletevalue safeboot command in the command line as administrator)
Additionally: if you have a bootable USB flash drive with Windows 10 or a recovery disc, then you can use them: Restore Windows 10 (you can try using restore points, as a last resort. reset the system).
If the problem persists and you can’t figure it out, write (with details of what, how and after what actions happened and is happening), though I don’t promise that I can give a solution.
Disable unnecessary programs and services from Windows autorun
There is a wonderful utility called msconfig, with its help you can speed up Windows boot. Although modern computers load the OS quickly, boot optimization can remove black screens for a few seconds.
- Start. Execute. In the window, enter msconfig.
- Services tab. here you can disable unnecessary services.
- Startup tab. to enable / disable programs at boot.
In Windows 10, startup items can be disabled through the Task Manager (Startup tab). The status column displays the status of the application.
Remove programs that conflict and block the OS from loading on startup
In this case, the sequence of actions for elimination of the problem will be approximately the same as in the above case. The only thing is that in Windows Safe Boot Mode you need to specify the “Enable Safe Mode” item. Further, in this download mode, you need to go to the control panel and in the “Programs and Features” window, sort by the date the applications were installed. Analyze what you have installed recently: it is possible that conflicting applications are the cause of the black screen and inadequate loading of Windows from the system disk on the computer. One of the best software for uninstalling applications. free utility CCleaner.
Monitor or component problems
The reason for the black screen may lie on the surface: the monitor does not work. This may be due to the loss of contact between the monitor and the video card, or the power cable is damaged / not plugged into the outlet. So be sure to check the connection.
As for the laptop, it is unlikely that the matrix “fell off” from the motherboard. To disable it, you need good reasons: for example, mechanical impact on the display. In this case, you will see that there are obvious damages on the screen: scratches, broken pixels, etc.
In addition to the monitor, we advise you to explore the system unit. Check if the video card is fixed in the corresponding socket of the motherboard, whether voltage is supplied to all PC components. This should be done only if you have the skills to assemble / disassemble a computer / laptop.
We write down the USB flash drive for recovery and reinstall Windows
Answer. Install Windows 7 from scratch or immediately install Windows 10, thereby killing two birds with one stone: update and solve the problem with a black screen when loading Windows 7.
One of the most dramatic ways to get around a black screen on boot. reinstall a stable operating system. Once upon a time, many of us used the installation CD / DVD to solve such problems (see above). Already after the arrival of Window 7 on the desktop PC market, the need for a floppy drive has gradually decreased, and today it is the most convenient way to install Windows. it is to create a bootable USB stick and restore in boot mode from a usb drive. In general, read a practical guide on how to make a bootable windows 8 USB flash drive.
One of the best programs for writing Windows to a USB flash drive. Rufus. The utility is available in Russian, it is free and, as a rule, writes fail-safe USB sticks for installing Windows.
Worst Thing That Can Happen: A Hard Drive Failed
Summary. In this guide, I tried to remember and collect from the Internet the most complete list of problems due to which a black screen appears on a PC. The OS version does not really matter, Windows 8, “dozen” or even outdated XP. If none of the methods helped, something is not clear, or you have your own ways to solve this problem. please ask questions and add your ideas in the comments.
Start Windows in Safe Mode on your computer
One of the most likely reasons why Windows or another operating system won’t boot. a system conflict due to which the OS cannot work correctly after turning on the PC. This can be caused, for example, by the fact that the user installs an incompatible program or drivers that conflict with Windows, and when the laptop / PC is turned on, the conflict will manifest itself from an unpleasant side. in the form of a black screen. How to remove it?
Fortunately, the Windows developers have provided a safe mode to log on to the operating system, which is specifically designed to address various compatibility issues. Entering safe mode, you can remove all problems on the computer, resolve conflicts, and then boot Windows in normal mode.
So, to enter Safe Mode on a computer:
- Remove from the computer all media and devices that may affect the boot Windows (flash drives, disks, etc.)
- Restart or turn on the computer, depending on its current state.
- To enter Safe Mode, hold down the F8 key during boot. If there are several operating systems on the PC (laptop or desktop version), then select the appropriate one from the list and then hold down F8 again to go to Windows Safe Boot Mode.
Further, in the boot parameters in safe mode, you can select one of the items and solve the problems of a black screen on a laptop or desktop computer.
Windows startup black screen: what to do if your computer won’t turn on
I don’t want to be trivial, but the so-called “black screen problem” when loading the operating system after turning on the computer. one of the most common problems faced by owners of both desktop computers and laptops. The operating system that won’t boot or the hard drive model is not very important in diagnosing the problem. How to remove the black screen when loading Windows 7, Windows 10 on a computer and laptop, the reasons for the failure, we will tell further.
This guide will be supplemented, so do not hesitate to ask questions, as I can, I will clarify technical issues and solve your problems with a black screen.
Using a bootable disk (Live CD) to fix errors and diagnose a black screen
When a black screen appears, it is advisable to check your computer and operating system for viruses. This can be done using a “live CD”. We recommend using the 4MRescueKit boot disk to enter the system recovery mode. In addition to checking for viruses, livecd 4MRescueKit includes data recovery modules, file backup and a disk manager like PartitionMagic. Even if this does not help to get rid of the black screen of death, you can at least prepare for reinstalling the operating system or diagnose the health of the hard drive in this mode. Live CD fixes problems regardless of version: it can be both Windows and Linux.

Resolving conflicts with the video driver, if the computer does not start, a black screen appears
An example of a SIMilar problem:
If you think that the black screen problem may be due to a conflict in the video card drivers on the computer or laptop, then:
- In the Secure Boot menu, select “Enable Low-Resolution Video Mode”.
- After successfully logging into the operating system account via Device Manager or Control Panel, remove the conflicting ATI / NVIDIA video driver.
- Reboot your computer
- There may be a conflict between the drivers of the motherboard and the video card. You need to try different combinations of drivers. To avoid reinstalling Windows every time you experiment, create a restore point and roll back to the previous restore point when a black screen appears.
- If the OS boots in normal mode correctly (the Desktop and the Windows cursor appear), then the black screen problem is really related to incorrect behavior after installing the drivers. Go to the video card manufacturer’s website and download the latest version to your hard drive, try updating the drivers again.
- If the black screen continues to appear, try the other solutions in this guide. for example, remove “harmful” programs.
