Change screen scale on computer hotkeys
Remote computer keyboard shortcuts
Has it ever happened that you used one of the RDP sessions to control a remote system and needed to press CtrlAltDel on the remote system, but you could not remember how to do this in the session window on the remote computer?
SIMply pressing CtrlAltDel sends a signal to the remote computer, which, of course, is not at all what you want. If you have faced such a problem, then today from the Top10 heading you will learn how to solve it. I present 10 convenient hotkeys that can be used when working with a remote computer.
CtrlAlt. The job of capturing screenshots of a remote computer is sometimes like magic. If you click Print Screen, you will get a screenshot of the local computer, not the remote one. Pressing CtrlAlt and the symbol will take a screenshot of the entire client window of the remote computer. It’s like clicking Print Screen on your local computer.
CtrlAlt (-). Sometimes you don’t need a snapshot of the entire desktop window of a remote computer, but only a snapshot of a specific window. Pressing CtrlAlt and the (-) symbol allows you to take a screenshot of only the active window during a session with a remote computer. This combination gives the same result as pressing AltPrint Screen on the local computer.
AltHome. Pressing AltHome brings up the Start menu on the remote system. This menu provides quick access to various programs installed on the remote system. This combination is SIMilar to pressing the Windows key on the local computer.
AltDelete. Pressing the AltDelete combination during a session with a remote computer opens the Windows menu of the application running on the remote system. The Windows menu usually opens under the icon in the upper left corner of most Windows applications and allows you to move and resize the application window.
CtrlAltBreak. Sometimes you may want a window on the remote system to be open in full screen, just like on the local computer. To switch the session of work with a remote computer to full-scale operation mode, press the CtrlAltBreak combination.
CtrlAltPause. As in the previous paragraph, the CtrlAltPause combination switches the session window from windowed mode to full-scale mode. However, in this case, the remote computer window remains at its standard size and does not fill the entire screen of the local computer. Instead, it is displayed against a black background.
AltInsert. Sometimes you need to quickly switch between different programs that you are running. Pressing the AltInsert combination allows you to cycle through programs on the remote system in the order in which they were started. This process is SIMilar to the process launched by AltTab combination on the local computer.
AltPage Down. Another way to cycle through windows with running programs while working with a remote system is provided by the AltPage Down combination. Pressing this combination allows you to switch programs during a session with the remote system by moving from right to left in the Windows Task Switch. This is the same as pressing the AltShiftTab combination on the local computer.
AltPage Up. Pressing AltPage Up allows you to switch programs during a session by moving from left to right in the Windows Task Switch. It’s like hitting AltTab on your standard computer.
CtrlAltEnd. One of the most difficult things in the process of working with a remote computer is transferring the CtrlAltDel combination to the remote system. Press CtrlAltEnd if you need to send a CtrlAltDel command to the remote system. Pressing this key opens the Microsoft Windows Security dialog box, which allows you to lock the computer, log off, change the password, and launch Task Manager.

How to scale the Windows interface
The operating system automatically determines the optimal screen scale if there are installed graphics drivers on a computer or laptop. In case of incorrect settings or your own will, it is advisable to increase, decrease the screen scale. Follow these steps as appropriate.
An incorrectly set screen resolution can make objects either enlarged or reduced, resulting in inconvenient use of the PC. To fix these problems read the articles on how to adjust the screen resolution on Windows 10, 7, 8, how to find out the computer screen resolution.
You can increase or decrease the scale of the screen on a computer or laptop by changing the DPI (dots per inch). In the Windows Control Panel, when presented with “small” or “large” icons, select the item “display”.
In the seven, click “another font size” (left), in the eight “custom size options” (center), in the top ten “set a custom zoom level” (center).
Set the percentage in the scale selection window; the higher the specified value, the larger the scale. Select from the list of ready-made values, or move the slider with the mouse. I advise you to tick the box to use XP-style scales so that legacy programs do not have problems with fonts.
Then click OK, then “apply”, click “exit now”. After logging out of the system, your screen scale, visual elements, fonts, and more will change. I recommend reading the material on how to change the font size in Windows.
Note: do not set the DPI too high, as objects can become very huge, making it impossible to return to acceptable sizes back in normal mode. If you encounter this problem, boot into safe mode and set adequate values.
Changing the screen scale of a computer, laptop on Windows
Users are often faced with tasks when it is necessary to increase or decrease the screen scale on a computer in Windows 7, 8, 10. Not all users know how to control scaling in Windows, so we will take a closer look at this process.
Controlling the size of computer screen objects can be roughly divided into two directions:
- change the scale of the windows interface
- changing the scale of individual objects
The first direction changes the size of absolutely everything that is displayed on the PC screen. In the second direction, the sizes in programs and individual OS elements change.
How to change the scale of individual OS objects
In Windows, you can change the scale of the screen for individual elements. You can easily change the size of desktop shortcuts, the size of folders and files in Explorer by holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and scrolling the mouse wheel up (to increase), down (to decrease). Also, this combination (Ctrl mouse wheel) works effectively in many programs: test and graphic editors, browsers and others.
You can use hotkeys in browsers, especially if you have a laptop and don’t have a mouse. To zoom out the screen on a laptop using the keyboard in the browser, hold down Ctrl and press the minus, to zoom in, press the plus. Press Ctrl 0 to return to default zoom. Combinations are supported by Photoshop.
Changing the scale of the computer screen using the keys and the mouse, the most convenient. However, the scaling of elements can be controlled directly in the menu, the interface of the program window, in the explorer, by setting the desired value. For example, to change the value in Word, you can move the slider (in the lower right corner), or set your own percentage of the size.
These are the methods you can use to increase or decrease the scale of the screen on a computer in Windows 7, 8, 10. Use all methods and choose the most convenient.
- Call the context menu by pressing the right mouse button on an empty space of the desktop.
- Click on the line “Screen resolution”.
Screen narrowed. reasons and solution
The narrowing of the monitor screen can be caused by:
- the wrong screen resolution (say, the selected resolution is designed for a 16: 9 ratio with a 4: 3 monitor or vice versa);
- the video card driver is not installed;
- connected to a TV or a second monitor;
- monitor is incorrectly configured.
Method two: using the keyboard
Many users resort to the following method, which involves using the keyboard. The method is considered the easiest, since you can instantly reduce or change the screen. you just need to remember the keyboard shortcut.
Pressing Ctrl and “” at the same time increases the display by 10%, and Ctrl and “-“. decreases it by the same amount. Use the key combination until you are satisfied with the result. The combination Ctrl 0 will return the original display size. Now you know that adjusting the monitor screen using the keyboard is SIMple.
Change the font without changing other parameters
Sometimes it happens that the user is satisfied with the size of icons and other interface elements, but the font seems inconvenient. On the “seven” and later versions, it became possible to directly change the size and type of the font, without affecting other design:
- Call the desktop context menu and go to the “Personalization” section.
Lack of driver
The problem often arises when reinstalling the OS or a failure in the driver or (less often) the video card itself. In case everything is in order with the video card, try downloading the latest version from the developer’s website.
- Open the “Start” menu. Click on the “Options” menu (gear button).
- We hold down the “Ctrl” button and use the “” and “-” buttons until we get the required scale. The method is effective, but rather crude, since such scaling has a certain step. The previous state may not seem large enough and the next one too large.
Graphics card settings
To configure the video card, we will use its control panel. For example, consider the control panel of an NVIDIA video card. To open it you need:
ZoomIt is a small-functionality program that replaces Windows Magnifier. It can enlarge individual fragments of the display, but its capabilities are not only in this. The program allows you to make notes and sketches on the screen. This will help those who record training videos with small interface elements. In addition, the program even has a screensaver function (time saver). When using it, it is important to remember that the program gives only physical magnification. Since it cannot increase the resolution of the selected area, the picture may be slightly blurry and less clear.
In the Opera, everything works in a SIMilar way. Click on the logo (upper left corner), and in the menu we find the line Scale. In it, the “/.” buttons change the size of the information in the window.
Keyboard shortcuts for zoom out
If you conduct a short survey, it turns out that most users prefer “hot keys” to complex operations. Instead of looking for the desired menu item, it is much easier to hit a SIMple combination to get the desired result. Fortunately, the developers of both the OS and other software support users in this. There are several ways to zoom out or enlarge the screen on your computer.
The first method uses both a keyboard and a computer mouse. It consists in the fact that you need to hold down the “Ctrl” key and rotate the mouse wheel. Rotation upwards increases the scale, downwards. decreases. This method is not only good for convenience. It is technically applicable to most programs. In addition, through this combination, you can also quickly resize your desktop shortcuts. If you apply a hotkey in the explorer, you can quickly change the presentation of elements (table, tile, icons of different sizes).
The second method does not affect the mouse, but its scope is slightly narrower. The bottom line is that you need to use one of two combinations. “Ctrl” increases the scale, and “Ctrl.” reduces it. Some laptops use the combination as a global setting, but the list is limited. As a rule, this method is more applicable in browsers and individual programs that claim such a function.
Carroll is a program with slightly different functionality that can also help with screen scaling. It is designed to change the screen resolution, which also duplicates the standard Windows functionality. Of the advantages, we can only highlight the ability to set profiles with a custom resolution. However, this is again not the best tool. As mentioned above, the scale in the program changes due to the screen resolution. Therefore, with decreasing resolution, the quality of the picture will suffer, and significantly.
Using the control panel
Another standard method of zooming in is in the control panel. Once you open it, you can enter the word “Scale” in the search bar (top right). A link to the Ease of Access Center appears. It contains tools to help people with special needs. Among them is “Screen Magnifier”. Originally created for the visually impaired, it can help in other situations as well. The essence of its action is to increase individual screen fragments.
After turning on the magnifier, you will notice a small window that appears. In it, it is possible to change the magnification level, as well as turn off the magnifier. By moving the cursor, you can move the enlarged section of the screen.
It should be noted that the enlarged fragment retains its original resolution. This means the picture may become blurry. As for the text, it retains its clarity when magnified up to 200%.
In addition to the standard hotkeys, you can use the Chrome settings. To do this, click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the window. A context menu will open, one of the lines of which is called Scale. By pressing “- /”, you can change the percentage value.
How to reduce the scale of shortcuts on a computer
Sometimes shrinking the screen on a computer means making it fit more shortcuts. This is also easy to do. However, we will distinguish between shortcuts on the desktop and items in Explorer. Both of those and others can be scaled, but this will use slightly different approaches.
First, let’s talk about the desktop, because it is on it that you often want to put more shortcuts. Of course, it is not worth showing excess in this, but now is not about that. There are three predefined scales for desktop shortcuts. You can change the size by clicking on an empty space of the RMB. Next, select “View” in the context menu. In the drop-down menu, select “Huge icons”, “Medium icons” or “Small icons”. It is also possible to set a custom value. To do this, you need to use hotkeys. Hold down “Ctrl” and rotate the mouse wheel. The scale will change smoothly and the icons will be evenly spaced on the updated invisible grid. This allows you to set the most appropriate scale for the shortcuts.
Let’s touch upon the possibility of changing the size of elements in the “Explorer”. You can also do this in several ways. In the “Explorer” at the top, you need to select the “View” tab (Windows 10) and select one of the proposed presentation or sorting options. The second option also assumes the use of the “View” function, however, it is selected by pressing the RMB over the white field. The third option is for those who want to quickly change the view to their liking. You need to hold down “Ctrl” and rotate the mouse wheel to change the scale of the icons or change them to the view of a list and a table. Each user can use the method that will be most convenient for him.
We don’t know who ripped off the location of the scale settings, but we have to admit that it turned out to be quite convenient. Press three points in the upper left corner of the window and change the value through “- /” in the Scale line.
How to zoom out the screen
The size of the image on the screen is one of the main criteria for the convenience of its perception, along with the resolution. Each person has his own indicator of the scale at which it will be convenient for him to use the PC. For this reason, computer manufacturers can only set an average scale factor. This value can suit many users, but not all. Those who are uncomfortable reading information often put up with difficulties, along the way scolding developers.
However, the inconvenient scale is far from a verdict. Since this problem is so common, the developers have left many ways to solve it. It is about them that we will talk today. If you have a great desire and a small amount of free time, it is easy to customize the monitor for yourself.
Zoom out laptop screen using keyboard
If the scale of the screen on a laptop seems large, then try to reduce its size. The most convenient and fastest methods are to zoom out using the keyboard, but there are other methods.
Using the keyboard
You don’t have to change the resolution to zoom out. It is enough to use a keyboard shortcut that allows you to reduce or increase the size of elements (buttons, text, panels), leaving the screen resolution unchanged.
There are two combinations. The most popular is to hold down the Ctrl button on the keyboard and use the mouse wheel to zoom in on the screen. When you move the wheel away from you, the size of the elements will increase; moving towards you will zoom out on the screen.
Instead of the mouse wheel, you can use the “” and “-” keys on the numeric keypad. The Ctrl key in this combination remains unchanged: you need to hold it while you change the screen scale. To restore the original scale, press Ctrl0.
Both methods work in all programs. browsers, office applications, graphic editors, etc. You cannot use keyboard shortcuts only to resize desktop items. But there are other ways for this.
Resizing the desktop
If the elements of the desktop seem large, then you can reduce them by changing the screen resolution.
- Right click on the desktop. Open the Screen Resolution tool.
- Set it to a higher value. For example, if the resolution is 800 by 600, set 1024 by 768 or higher.
There is a recommended resolution for each video card. Try to set the value next to which there is a signature “recommended”. In this case, the size of the desktop elements should be optimal. On a laptop with Windows 10 installed, the path will be slightly longer:
- Right click on the desktop, open “Display Settings” (or go to “Settings” and go to the “System” tab).
- Scroll down the settings page and open additional options.
- Set a suitable resolution and save the configuration.
If the only inconvenience is the size of the icons on the desktop, then you should not change the resolution. Try another way:
- Right click on the desktop.
- Expand the View menu. Select icon size. small, medium, large.
The same operation can be performed using the keyboard. To open the desktop context menu, click the button with the list and cursor image. It is usually located to the right of the spacebar next to the Alt or WinKey key. You can also zoom in or out by changing DPI (the number of displayed dots per inch).
- Open the control panel, set the view “Large icons”. Go to the “Screen” section.
- Click on the “Custom font size” link in the menu on the left. On Windows 8, the item is called “Custom Size Settings”, and on Windows 10. “Set Custom Zoom Level”.
- Set the scale from normal size. The higher the value you set, the larger the icons will be.
Be sure to check the box for use in the Windows XP style, otherwise when starting old programs, defects in the display of the font may appear. Do not immediately set the maximum DPI value, otherwise the elements will crawl out of the screen, and you will not be able to roll back the changes.
Scale in applications
If you need to zoom out in the program, you can use the Ctrl key and the wheel, but in many applications other methods are available. For example, to resize elements in the browser (for example Chrome):
- Open the main browser menu.
- Using the “Scale” item, increase or decrease the size of text and other elements displayed in the web browser window.
In other browsers, the zooming procedure is the same. But it is preferable to use button combinations that perform the same task as the settings in the web browser menu.
