Computer Does Not Turn On Black Screen What To Do
Broken power supply
A fairly common problem is the failure of the power supply.
This usually manifests itself in the fact that when the computer is turned on, the fans do NOT start and the indicator LEDs on the case do NOT light up. Although there are situations when the computer starts up when the power supply fails, but the information is NOT displayed on the monitor. This may mean that part of the computer’s devices are powered (for example, voltage is supplied to the motherboard), but either the power quality does not meet the requirements, or there are problems with the power of the second devices, that is, all computer systems are NOT provided with power at the proper level.
In stationary computers, the power supply is installed in the case, and here it is very important to understand that the quality of power directly affects the stability of the computer and its resource.
For this reason, you should not save on the power supply. Poor quality power supply Not only can fail quite quickly, but can also burn other computer devices, such as the motherboard.
Do not forget that the operation of the power supply is influenced by the computer case and the location of the system unit. A cheap case with poor ventilation may well become a prerequisite for a power supply failure.
Well, the location of the computer system unit is very important, because if you put the system unit under the table close to the wall, then the probability of overheating increases dramatically and trouble threatens Not only the power supply unit. Overheating will lead to the fact that all the cooling systems of the computer will be worn out and very soon you will hear an unusual hum of the fans, indicating that they will need to be replaced soon.
If the suspicion falls on the power supply, then at home you can check it in only one way. connect another power supply, temporarily removed from another computer.
There is nothing complicated in this and you need minimal knowledge of the computer device to perform this operation. You will need a Phillips screwdriver and a manual from the motherboard to properly connect the appropriate connectors from the power supply to it. You can do without a manual by simply taking a photo of all the connected connectors before removing the power supply, and after checking, connect the power supply according to the photos.
Well, it’s worth saying that at home, temporary replacement of suspicious components with a similar one is the only reliable way to quickly determine the cause of a hardware problem.
6 reasons why your computer will NOT start
What to do if your computer won’t turn on or turn on but won’t boot.
Quite often, these problems are associated with the hardware of the computer, that is, with its devices or, as they say in computer slang, with the “hardware”.
In this post I will tell you about the most common causes of such problems.
The processor cannot be ruled out, although this is a rather rare case. In my practice, I have come across the fact that the computer was unstable due to the processor, only once. It was a long time ago and we were talking about a fairly productive at that time dual-processor computer built on AMD processors. Due to poor ventilation, one of the processors failed, which led to sudden freezes, reboots and failure will turn on.
Now this is already unlikely and, perhaps, only a manufacturing defect can lead to similar problems.
Of course, you can try to replace the processor at home with a similar one from another computer, but unlike a power supply, this operation is somewhat more complicated.
First, different series of processors are installed in different sockets (socket), that is, a socket. This means that the second processor must have exactly the same socket.
Secondly, you will have to deal with the processor cooling system and not all of them are easy to dismantle.
For novice users, I would NOT recommend performing such operations on their own, since it is quite easy to believe something on the motherboard, and not calculate the effort when removing or installing the cooling system.
In addition, when re-installing the cooling system on the processor, it is necessary to apply thermal grease to better remove heat from the processor. Not everyone has a tube of thermal paste at hand, so here, as in the case of the motherboard, it is better to contact the service.
The motherboard can also cause the computer to stop booting, or when the computer is turned on, information will not be displayed on the screen. A sudden restart or freezing of the computer can also indicate problems with the motherboard.
Since the motherboard is the basis, before you suspect it, you should first check other devices. the power supply, the operating system and the card.
Well, here you will need more serious diagnostics and you will have to contact a specialized service, where after checking you will be told whether it is worth repairing the motherboard or it is easier to buy a new one.
If the computer turns on, but there is no image on the monitor or it has defects, such as stripes, then the reason most likely lies in the card.
First, such trivial things as the cable connecting the monitor to the card (system unit) are checked.
Then I look inside the case and make sure that the card is securely installed in the slot on the motherboard. If possible, we temporarily replace the card with another.
Also, it is impossible to exclude a monitor breakdown or cable failure, but this is less common.
As a rule, problems with RAM lead to a freeze of the computer or to its sudden overload. Quite often, such problems are accompanied by the appearance of the so-called blue screen of death (BSoD)
Also, the computer can start, but there will be no information on the monitor. The reason may be a defective memory module or its failure, including through the fault of a poor-quality power supply.
It is quite possible to independently diagnose RAM and you can do this even using Windows tools.
You can also temporarily replace the memory bar in order to make sure that it is in it.
Now almost all computers have dual-channel memory, that is, usually these are two memory strips. In this case, you can alternately work first with only one bar, and then only with the second. In this empirical way, you can establish which of the slats is out of order.
Well, if the problem arose just after manipulating the RAM, then check the reliability of its installation. Perhaps you have not fully installed the memory strip in the slot. Of course, all manipulations inside the computer case are carried out ONLY when the power is off.
Well, if the computer does NOT start, but you hear an unusual crackling, grinding or clicking of the hard drive, then this clearly indicates a problem with it. There may also be other problems related to the hard drive, for example, a message like this will appear:
The messages say that booting from disk is not possible, you need to insert the system disk and press the Enter key.
If after turning on the computer such an inscription appears, then first of all it is worth checking the correctness and reliability of the connection of the hard drive to the motherboard, and also make sure that the hard drive is visible in the BIOS, that is, that the motherboard diagnostic system detects the presence of a hard drive.
If there is no hard disk in the BIOS, then you will have to carry it to the service. The problem may be with the controller, that is, with the hard drive board. But before that, you should still try to replace the cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard. I met a couple of times with a situation where a defective cable led to a similar problem.
If the hard disk is detected, but the computer does not boot, then we proceed to testing the disk and there are a lot of nuances. I have covered many of them in the series. which was dedicated to hard drives.
IN THESE, I talked in some detail about the possible breakdowns of the hard drive and how you can diagnose it yourself.
Why the computer does not turn on. the first step towards finding out the cause
Someone may say that what is proposed below is superfluous, but personal experience suggests otherwise. If your laptop or computer does not turn on, check the cable connection (only the plug plugged into the outlet, but also the connector connected to the system unit), the operability of the outlet itself, and other things related to the connecting cables (possibly the operability of the cable itself).
Also, most power supplies have an additional ON-OFF switch (usually found on the back of the system unit). Check that it is in the “On” position (Important: do not confuse it with a 127-220 Volt switch, usually red and inaccessible for simple finger switching, see photo below).
If Shortly before the problem appeared, you cleaned the computer from dust or installed new hardware, and the computer does not turn on “at all”, i.e. there is no fan noise or power indicator light, check the connection of the power supply to the connectors on the motherboard, as well as the connection of the connectors on the front panel of the system unit (see How to connect the front panel of the system unit to the motherboard).
The computer does not turn on
The phrase in the title is often heard and read in the comments of users on this site. This manual describes in detail all the most common situations of this kind, Possible causes of the problem and information on what to do if the computer does not turn on.
Just in case, I note that only the case is considered here if, after pressing the power button, no messages from the computer appear on the screen at all (i.e. you see a black screen without the previous inscriptions of the motherboard or a message stating that there is no signal).
If you see a message that an error has occurred, then this is no longer “does not turn on”, it is. the operating system does not boot (or some BIOS or UEFI glitches have occurred). In this case, I recommend looking at the following two materials: Windows 10 does not start, and Windows 7 does not start.
If the computer does not turn on and beeps at the same time, I recommend Pay attention to the material Computer beeps when turned on, which will help to find out the cause of the problem.
The computer turns on and off immediately
If immediately after turning on the computer turns off, without any Squeaks, especially if Shortly before that it had already turned on NOT the first time, then the reason is most likely in the power supply or motherboard (pay attention to points 2 and 4 from the list above).
But sometimes this can also indicate a malfunction of the second equipment (for example, a card, again, pay attention to point 2), problems with cooling the processor (especially if sometimes the computer starts to boot, and on the second or third attempt it turns off immediately after turning on, and Not long before that, you were not very skillful at changing thermal paste or cleaning your computer from dust).
If your computer makes a noise when you turn it on, but the monitor won’t turn on
One of the most common cases. Some people mistakenly believe that if the computer is buzzing, the coolers are working, the LEDs (“light bulbs”) in the system unit and the keyboard (mice) are on, then the problem is not in the PC, but simply the computer monitor does not turn on. In fact, most often this indicates problems with the computer’s power supply, RAM or motherboard.
In the general case (for an ordinary user who has at hand additional power supplies, motherboards, RAM cards and voltmeters), you can try the following steps to diagnose the cause of this behavior (before the described actions, I turn off the computer from the outlet, and to completely de-energize press and hold the power button for a few seconds):
- Remove the RAM strips, wipe their contacts with a soft rubber eraser, put them in place (and it is better to do this one board at a time, checking the inclusion in each of them).
- If there is a separate monitor output on the motherboard (integrated chip), try disconnecting (removing) the discrete card, and connecting the monitor to the integrated one. If the computer turns on after that, try wiping the contacts on the separate card and reinstalling it. If in this case the computer does not turn on again, while there are no sounds, it is possible that the matter is in the power supply (if there is a discrete card, it ceased to “cope”), and possibly in the card itself.
- Try (also with the computer turned off) removing the battery from the motherboard and replacing it. And if before the appearance of the problem you are faced with the fact that the time is reset on the computer, then completely replace it. (See Resetting Computer Time)
- Note if there are any swollen capacitors on the motherboard, which may look like the image below. If there is, perhaps it’s time to repair or replace the MP.
To summarize, if the computer turns on, the fans work, but there is no image. most often it is not the monitor or even the card, “top 2” reasons: RAM and power supply. Related Topic When I turn on the computer, the monitor does not turn on.
Other options for the causes of failure
There are also many unlikely, but still encountered in practice, options, among which we had to deal with the following:
- The computer turns on only if there is a discrete card. internal out of order.
- The computer turns on only if you turn off the printer or scanner connected to it (or other USB devices, especially if you have them recently).
- The computer does not turn on when a faulty keyboard or mouse is connected.
If nothing in the instructions helped you, ask in the comments, trying to describe the situation in as much detail as possible. how exactly it does not turn on (how it looks to the user), what happened immediately before that and were there any additional symptoms.

Computer does not turn on black screen
Overview of the most common problems
You turn on the computer and, judging by the sound, the download has started, but the monitor does NOT show any signs of life. It remains completely black. What to do? First of all, DO NOT panic. It may not be so tragic.
The reason for the absence of a picture on the monitor may be your absent-mindedness, inattention, a child’s prank, a friend’s joke. Check the brightness of your monitor. If it is completely off, then the screen will be only black.
Did not help? Then let’s look for other reasons.
The main reasons are of two types:
a) monitor malfunction.
b) cord failure.
c) lack of electricity in the outlet.
d) card malfunction.
a) failure of the operating system.
b) driver failure.
c) inappropriate screen resolution.
Did you press start, hear how the coolers started working, but the monitor did not come to life? Calmly Inspect the monitor. Maybe you didn’t include it corny.
Start your inspection with the Power button of the monitor itself. Next Inspect the electrical cord. on both sides. Remove it from the connectors and insert it, pressed it back as tightly as possible. Do the same with the cord connecting the monitor to the system unit. Examine cords for external damage, especially for pet owners. Be sure to check if there is an electric current in the outlet, and if the monitor is connected via an extension cord, then examine it too. When checking the cables, pay attention to whether they are inserted into their sockets.
If all these manipulations did not lead to success, and you are sure that the breakdown is not of a software nature, then your card has flown or your monitor has failed. Your service.
If you think that the absence of an image on the monitor is of a software nature, then.
- Reboot the machine, start the operating system in safe mode using the F8 button.
- If step 1 succeeds and the monitor comes to life, check the display settings. If necessary, correct them in the desired direction or reset to the factory.
- Roll back the system to the latest working version.
- Update the card driver.
- Check your computer with an antivirus. Remember, you should always have the most current version. Everything that the antivirus finds must be destroyed.
- Start the machine in normal mode.
It is quite possible that these simple manipulations will revive your computer.
In order not to get into a similar situation, it never downloads dubious, unverified files of unknown origin to its machine. Remember. first a virus appears, and then a cure for it!
Of course, you are a jack of all trades. However, if you decide to troubleshoot your computer yourself, be 100% sure that you are doing everything right.

What to do if the computer does not turn on. Why won’t the computer turn on
The computer won’t turn on at all
This can be either the simplest reason for not turning on the computer, or the most difficult. Let’s start with a simple one. If your computer does not turn on, then the most common reason is the lack of power supply to it. This happens as a result of several factors:
- Power supply off
The power supply on / off button, located on the back of the computer, is in the “Off” position. It is possible that you accidentally touched it while dusting or cleaning under the table. To solve the problem, you just need to turn this button to the “On” position and that’s it. the computer will start.
- The power cable is poorly inserted into the system unit
Try unplugging and plugging in the power cord that is connected to the computer’s power supply, make sure it is fully inserted, and then try starting the computer again. If that doesn’t help, let’s move on.
- Computer power cable plug is pulled out or not inserted properly
In this case, insert the plug well into the outlet, then try to start the computer.
- Regulator or UPS not working
If your computer is connected through a stabilizer or continuous power supply, then it is possible that they are out of order, so try connecting the computer directly.
- Surge protector or outlet not working
Well, the last of the simple reasons why the computer does not start is a faulty surge protector or outlet. Try to connect the computer through a different surge protector and an outlet, if it starts up, then this is the reason, if this did not help, then the breakdown is more serious.
Another fairly common prerequisite for why the computer does not turn on is the incorrect connection of its components in the system unit, this quite often happens when users clean the computer on their own, and at the same time disconnect the wires or accidentally touch them.
The next reason is the breakdown of the power supply, this is a fairly frequent breakdown in computers, since on average the power supplies work for 3 years, after which they do NOT rarely fail. If the power supply is also in working order, then there are 2 variants of failure: either the motherboard has failed, or the contacts have oxidized.
The computer won’t turn on, but the fans are running
Computer starts up but nothing happens? Check all contacts and connections of components in the system unit. Most often this happens after self-cleaning the inside of the system unit and components. Also, in some cases, resetting the BIOS helps, for this it is necessary to close the Corresponding terminals on the motherboard and restart the computer, before starting Let’s make the settings of the reset BIOS.
The computer does not turn on and beeps
If the computer turns on and beeps, it means that one of the devices is missing or not connected correctly. By the nature of the sounds emitted, or rather by the number of long and short Squeaks. you will be able to determine exactly what the problem is. It may be necessary to pull out and reinsert this component, clean the contacts or replace it due to failure.
The computer turns on but does not boot
If the computer turns on but does not start, then this happens for three reasons, let’s consider them:
- The computer does not see the hard disk on which the operating system is installed
In this case, there may be 2 reasons why the operating system does NOT boot: either the hard drive is not properly connected, or it is out of order. Try shutting down your computer and disconnecting the hard drive, then reconnecting it. Start your computer and try to listen to this hard drive, if it works and does NOT make any strange sounds, then go to the next point. If the hard drive does NOT hum at all or hums somehow incorrectly, then try reconnecting it using other wires, if this does not help, then most likely the hard drive is broken.
- The system loader does not specify or is specified incorrectly the partition from which it needs to boot
Most often, this reason happens due to the installation of a second operating system and the subsequent removal of one of them. In this case, you need to restore the bootloader. In the Windows operating system, this can be done as follows: you need to boot from the operating system installation disk, select the “System Restore” item from the menu, then select the operating system you want to restore and click the “Next” button and click “Command Prompt”. In the command line, write the following commands: first. “bootrec.exe / fixmbr”, then press “Enter” and enter the following command. “bootrec.exe / fixboot” and also press “Enter”. Then we exit this menu and restart the computer.
- Operating system problems
If the previous action did not help or the loader sees the operating system, but the system itself does not start, then you can again try to restore it using the boot disk by selecting the “Startup Restore” or “System Restore” item. If these actions do NOT bring results, then you will have to reinstall the system. We described in detail how to install Windows 8 in our separate article.
The computer turns on, but there is no picture
If the computer turns on, but it has a black screen, then the problem is probably the wrong monitor connection. To do this, check the correct connection of the cable going to the monitor, both from the side of the system unit and from the side of the monitor itself. Then check the settings in the monitor itself so that the correct type of connection is displayed there: VGA, DVI or HDMI. Also check the power cable to the monitor to make sure it is properly connected.
The next reason why there may be no image on the monitor is driver failure. Try booting your computer in Safe Mode and reinstalling the driver. If this does not help, try connecting the monitor to the integrated card by pulling out the discrete one. If an image appears, then there is a problem with the card (try to clean the contacts and insert the card well into the slot), if there are images, then it is possible that the problem is in the monitor.
The computer turns on and off immediately
This situation occurs for two reasons: the cooling cooler has failed or the power button is jammed. Therefore, check the performance of the cooler, if everything is in order with it, then Disconnect the start button from the motherboard and start the computer by closing the Start terminals (be careful and DO NOT do this if you have no experience!), If the computer starts and DOES NOT turn off. Repair the button.
If none of the above recommendations helped, then you need to contact the service center, because without definitely having experience and knowledge, you will NOT fix a serious breakdown.
Another solution when iPhone won’t turn on
This solution is slightly different for different iPhone models. precisely, the way of its implementation differs.
Try in smartphones 4S / 6S simultaneously press “HOME” (bottom on the screen) and “POWER” (side on the case) for 15-20 seconds, and in 7 models POWER and Volume.
In 8/10 models, quickly press and release the “Volume up” button, then do the same with the side button (POWER).
If successful, the screen should display the “burning apple” logo. Release buttons and wait for launch.
I do not know why, but it helps many to turn on / off the silent mode switch several times in the steps above (if holding HOME and POWER is ineffective).
If these recommendations above did not give a successful result, then how NOT regrettable, but the prerequisite may be physical damage to the components.
You can only replace the cable or charger on your own, but it is better to entrust the “fillings” to specialists.
NOTE: it has been noticed that sometimes the smartphone is NOT charged from the charger, but it is charging from the computer or laptop. I recommend you try and see for yourself. success.
What to do if iPhone screen is black and won’t turn on
“Black screen is on” and no response from iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, iPhone 5, iPhone x is not a rare problem among Apple phone users.
Although it looks “formidable”, it is usually very easy to solve. See below what to do with such situations.
If your iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 5, iPhone 7, iPhone x, iPhone 4s, iPhone 6s, iPhone 4, iPhone 7 plus, iPhone se stopped responding to attempts to bring it into working order and shows its opposition through the so-called “ black screen “, it is not yet lead to send it for repair.
There is a simple and quick way to bring him to life using a special computer program.
Program to fix black screen in iPhone
There is a great program that can turn on the iPhone even if the buttons don’t work. It’s called “ReiBoot”. Installed on a computer. The translation is really a little lame, but you can figure it out. You can download it here.
In addition to turning on / rebooting, many solutions are integrated into it for fixing errors in auto products in the firmware.
In particular, elimination of freezes on an apple, problems with a black screen, splash screen, death screen, connecting to iTunes and many others.
The program has been verified. I recommend, although it is not a fact that it will help you, since of course it will not fix hardware problems.
Other Ways to Fix iPhone Black Screen Problem
If the phone still does NOT respond and the black screen does NOT disappear, connect the phone to the charger and press two buttons at the same time: wake / standby and start button.
Hold the buttons for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen. In some cases, you may also see a battery icon, which means you need to charge your phone.
A completely discharged battery is the most common cause. In rare cases, the firmware may fly off.
Connect your smartphone to a charger or to a computer / laptop and leave for 30 minutes. If the reason is in the battery, then after half an hour of charging it will definitely turn on.
