Set up dual monitors on a Windows 10, 8, and Windows 7 computer
After turning on the computer with two monitors connected to it, they, after booting, are usually detected by the system automatically. However, it may turn out that the first time you load the image will not be on the monitor on which it is usually displayed.
After the first launch, all that remains is to configure the mode of operation of two monitors, while Windows supports the following modes:
- Screen mirroring. the same image is displayed on both monitors. In this case, if the physical resolution of the monitors is different, there may be problems in the form of image blur on one of them, since when the screen is duplicated for both monitors, the system sets the same resolution (and this cannot be changed).
- Displaying the image only on one of the monitors.
- Expand screens. when you select this option for two monitors, the Windows desktop “expands” to two screens, i.e. the second monitor is the continuation of the desktop.
Operation modes are configured in the Windows screen parameters:
- In Windows 10 and 8, you can press the WinP (Latin P) keys to select the monitor mode. When you select Extend, the desktop may appear to have “expanded in the wrong direction”. In this case, go to Settings. System. Display, select the monitor that is physically located on the left and check the box “Set as the main display”.
- In Windows 7 (it is also possible to do it in Windows 8) go to the screen resolution settings of the control panel and set the desired operating mode in the “Multiple displays” field. If you select “Expand These Screens”, it may turn out that parts of the desktop are “swapped” in places. In this case, select in the display settings the monitor that is physically located on the left and at the bottom click “Make the main display”.
In all cases, if you are having problems with the clarity of the image, make sure that each monitor is set to its physical screen resolution (see How to change the screen resolution of Windows 10, How to change the screen resolution in Windows 7 and 8).
How to connect two monitors to a computer
If you need to connect two monitors to a computer or a second monitor to a laptop, this is usually not difficult at all, except in rare cases (when you have a PC with an integrated video adapter and only one monitor output).

Connecting a second monitor to a video card
In order to connect two monitors to a computer, you need a video card with more than one output for connecting a monitor, and these are practically all modern discrete video cards from NVIDIA and AMD. In the case of laptops, they almost always have an HDMI, VGA or, more recently, Thunderbolt 3 connector for connecting an external monitor.
In this case, it will be required that the outputs of the video card are those that your monitor supports for input, otherwise adapters may be required. For example, if you have two old monitors with only VGA input, and the video card has a set of HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI, the corresponding adapters will come in handy (although, perhaps, a monitor replacement would be a better solution here).
Note: From my observation, some novice users are unaware that their monitor has more inputs than it uses. Even if your monitor is connected via VGA or DVI, please note that there may be other inputs on its back that you can use, in which case you just have to purchase the necessary cable.
Thus, the initial task is to physically connect two monitors using the available video card outputs and monitor inputs. It is better to do this with the computer turned off, while it would also be wise to turn it off from the power supply.
If it is impossible to make the connection (there are no outputs, inputs, adapters, cables). it is worth considering options for purchasing a video card or monitor suitable for our task with the necessary set of inputs.
In conclusion, a few additional points that may be useful when connecting two monitors or just for information.
- Some graphics adapters (in particular, Intel) as part of the drivers have their own settings for configuring the operation of multiple monitors.
- In the “Expand screens” option, the taskbar is available on two monitors at the same time only in Windows In previous versions, this is only possible with the help of third-party programs.
- If you have a Thunderbolt 3 output on a laptop or PC with integrated video, you can use it to connect multiple monitors: there are not many such monitors on sale yet (but soon they will be and they can be connected “in series” to one another), but on the other hand there are devices. docking stations connected via Thunderbolt 3 (in the form of USB-C) and having multiple monitor outputs (in the image Dell Thunderbolt Dock, designed for Dell laptops, but compatible not only with them).
- If your task is to duplicate the image on two monitors, while the computer has only one monitor output (integrated video), you can find an inexpensive splitter (splitter) for this purpose. Just search for a VGA, DVI or HDMI splitter on the market depending on the output available.

How to connect laptop to laptop via HDMI
There are many ways of transferring information from computer to computer, and the use of each of them is determined by the conditions and capabilities of the person who needs to transport the data. In particular, in laptops, two protocols are provided specifically for the corresponding purposes: LAN and WLAN. Also modern machines have an HDMI port. But can it be used to exchange information between devices, and if so, how to connect a laptop to a laptop via HDMI, more on that later.
How to connect a laptop to another laptop with HDMI
Connecting your laptop to your laptop via HDMI is pretty SIMple. To do this, you need to insert the cables into the jacks, and. And then nothing. The fact is that HDMI in laptops only works for output. That is, it can transmit data, but cannot receive it.
HDMI in laptops is designed to output images and sound to an external output device such as a TV. Thus, it turns out that connecting two laptops with an HDMI cable is pointless.

- In the displayed window, enter: “IP-address”: 192.168.1.1, “Mask”: 255.255.255.0.
On the second computer, you will need to repeat these steps, only specifying other data: “IP address”: 192.168.1.2, “Mask”: 255.255.255.0. After that, two computers will be united into one network, and they will be able to freely exchange information.

The easiest way to establish communication between two laptops is to connect them to a private Wi-Fi network. For example, in Widows 7, this is very easy. For this you need:
- Go to “Control Panel”. “Networks and Internet”. “Network and Sharing Center”;
- Select “Manage wireless networks”;
- Click on “Add”;
- Select “Create a computer-to-computer network”;
- Click “Next”, enter the name of the access point, specify the encryption method and come up with a password;
- After that, click “Next”. “Finish”.
Then you need to change the sharing settings, for which you need to open the “Advanced sharing options” and, for example, for the “Home and work” network, put all the switches in the “Allow” position.

How to build a network of multiple routers using a cable?
There are two ways to connect multiple routers to one network using a cable. These are:
The so-called LAN / LAN connection. That is, building a network consisting of several routers by connecting their LAN ports using a network cable.
And LAN / WAN connection. That is, building a network consisting of several routers by connecting the LAN port of the primary router to the WAN / Internet port of the secondary router using a network cable.

How to connect a router to a router
There are many advantages and disadvantages when you connect your router to a router on your network. Benefits of connecting a router to a router:
- You may have a very large home and a single device may not be powerful enough to send wireless signals everywhere. In this case, you can add a second block to increase the Wi-Fi signal, as well as increase the number of Ethernet ports for connecting wired devices.
- Maybe you have a wired network and want to add some new Wi-Fi devices to it, in which case you can add a wireless hotspot to get Wi-Fi signal.
- To create open Wi-Fi for guest users and prevent them from entering your main network.

Let’s take an example where you have 2 Linksys routers that you want to connect to each other.
Primary Router Router A (Linksys E3000) will always be connected to a modem and will be the primary device for connecting to the Internet. You do not need to change any settings on the E3000 main unit.
Router B (Linksys E1000) will be the add-on you want to add to your network.
There are 2 types of connection.
LAN / WAN connection.
The second way is to combine two routers into one network. with a network cable.
In case of LAN / WAN connection, use a network cable to connect the LAN port of the primary router to the WAN / Internet port of another (secondary) router.
Connect to the first device:
and check if the DHCP server is enabled on it. It is usually enabled by default. To do this, go to the DHCP / DHCP Settings menu.
If DHCP server is disabled, enable it.
Remember to save your changes.

For the other device, go to the Net / WAN section and set the Connection Type as Dynamic IP. Save changes.
In the DHCP section, leave the DHCP server enabled.
If you plan to use the LAN ports of the secondary router, make sure their IP addresses do not conflict with those of the primary router.
That is, if your primary router is in the range of 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199, it is better to have a secondary router range of 192.168.0.200 to 192.168.0.299, but always within the primary subnet.
Then you can start a separate access point for each of the routers. If you did everything correctly, both routers will be connected to the Internet, will work on the same network and have access to network devices.

LAN / LAN connection
In the case of a LAN / LAN connection, take two routers and decide which one you want to use as your primary device, usually a router that receives a cable to connect to the Internet from your ISP.
Use a network cable to connect the LAN ports of the primary router to the secondary (secondary) router.

Connect to the first device
and check if the DHCP server is enabled on it. It is usually enabled by default. To do this, go to the DHCP / DHCP Settings menu.
If DHCP server is disabled, enable it.
Remember to save your changes.
Then connect to another device,
and disable the DHCP server because it will get all addresses from the main router. To do this, go to the DHCP / DHCP Settings menu.
If DHCP server is enabled, disable it.
In the Network / LAN section, change the IP address so that it does not match the address of the main router. For example, change it to 192.168.0.2. Since the main router has 192.168.0.1
After reboot, the secondary router should work in the same network with the first (primary / primary), receive an Internet connection from it and work as an access point.
Why combine multiple routers into one network?
In some situations, a single router may not be enough to build a network or provide high quality Wi-Fi coverage, which means it may not be able to provide the desired Wi-Fi coverage or may not have the required number of ports for devices connected to such a network. Some rooms or areas may be out of range of your router’s Wi-Fi signal. This situation is well known to people who have built a Wi-Fi network in a large house, apartment or office, consisting of many rooms. If this happens, additional hardware needs to be installed to expand the network to the desired coverage, and it is not as difficult as it might seem.
This can be done in several ways, which we will discuss in this article:
- First option. it is the connection of two or more routers with a cable. You will need to run a cable from one router to the other (s). It is not always convenient, but it is the most stable and reliable way to connect them. If you need a stable, high speed network for a range of devices, routers should use a cable connection.
- Second option. connection of routers via Wi-Fi. In this case, bridging (WDS) or repeater mode is used. In fact, they are the same, but these settings are implemented differently in routers from different manufacturers.
So that’s the starting point. We have a main router connected to the internet and it broadcasts a Wi-Fi network. We need to install another router, for example, in another room or on another floor. This second router will kind of enhance the Wi-Fi network provided by the main router and help extend the same network to cover more distant rooms.
The second router can be connected to the main router by cable or Wi-Fi.
Let’s take a closer look at both connection methods.
We connect two routers via Wi-Fi (in WDS mode)
We will consider the example of the most popular manufacturers: Asus, Tp-Link, Zyxel, and D-link.
This means that you must have a main router, which must distribute a Wi-Fi network, to which we will connect the second. It can be anything. In the sense that it is not necessary that it be, for example, two Tp-Link routers (although it is desirable).
Do I need to change the settings of the main router? Yes. In the settings of the main router, you need to set the static channel of the wireless network. Otherwise, connection problems may occur. How to change the channel on different routers, I wrote in this manual. Set for example static 6 channel. And remember him, he will still be useful to us.
That’s it, you don’t need to change any of the main device settings.
How to connect routers via Wi-Fi?
Most often, routers are connected via Wi-Fi, and this seems natural, as it saves effort on laying cables and drilling holes in the walls.
In my case, the main router is TP-link TL-WR841N. It broadcasts a Wi-Fi network called hetmansoftware.
Keep in mind that the router we are going to connect to in bridge mode must already be configured, that is, the Internet connection must be up and running, and the Wi-Fi network is broadcast.

Before proceeding to configure the second router, you need to change the wireless settings of the primary router so that the channel for this network is static and not automatic.
For example, if your main router. other TP-Link, you can change the channel in the settings by visiting the Wireless tab. In the Channel field, specify a static channel. For example: 1 or 9, whatever. Save settings.
Now that the static link is established, you can exit the basic settings of the router.
Let’s set up a router that will work in WDS mode. In my case, TP-Link Archer C20 is used as a specific model. Go to the router settings.
First you need to change the IP address of the second router. You should avoid the situation where two devices with the same IP addresses are on the same network. For example, if the primary router has an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the other router also has an address of 192.168.0.1, the two addresses will conflict. Go to the Network / LAN tab. In the IP address field, change the last digit. let’s say put 2 instead of 1. Or, as in my case, change it from 192. 168.1.1 to 192.168.0.2. Save changed settings.
Why should you do it this way? You need to know the IP address of the main router to which you are going to connect. If it has an address of 192.168.1.1 then the address of the router you want to connect to via WDS should be changed to 192.168.1.2. If the primary router is 192.168.0.1, you must assign the following address to the other router: 192.168.0.2. It is important that both routers are on the same subnet.
Go to settings again, but this time the IP address will be different. 192.168.0.2. The one you specified earlier.
Go to the Wireless / Basic Settings tab. In the Wireless Network Name field, you can specify the name of the second wireless network. In the Channel field, make sure you specify the same channel that you specified in the main router settings. In my case, this is channel 9.
Now check the Enable WDS box, and click Scan.
From the list, select the network from which your router will connect to the Internet. Click the Connect link next to the network you selected.
Now all that remains is to specify the password for the main network in the Password field. Enter it and click the Save button.
After rebooting, go to the settings of the second router again. While on the main page (Status tab), look at the Wireless section. The WDS Status line must indicate Enabled. This means that the second router has already connected to the main router, and now it should be broadcasting Wi-Fi.
However, the Internet connection will only be available over Wi-Fi, and if you connect the devices to a router (operating in WDS mode) with a cable, they will not be able to access the Internet.
To properly configure this feature, you need to disable the DHCP server for the router on which the WDS bridge is configured, that is, for the router, which in my case is secondary. It is also necessary that its local IP address is in the same subnet to which the main (main) router belongs.
Therefore, you need to enter the DHCP menu of the secondary router and disable this function.
This is the final step in connecting two routers over Wi-Fi.
Find the correct location to place the second router so that it is within range of the primary router. Set the desired wireless network name and password. We have already described this step in detail in our article on setting up Wi-Fi mode for a router.

A switch is a device capable of supplying a signal to the monitor screen from several PCs at once. In addition, it allows you to connect one set of peripheral devices. a keyboard and mouse and use them to control all computers. Many switches allow you to use a speaker system (mostly stereo) or headphones. When choosing a switch, you should pay attention to the set of ports. You need to be guided by the connectors on your peripherals. PS / 2 or USB for the mouse and keyboard and VGA or DVI for the monitor.
The assembly of switches can be done with or without a housing (box).
There is nothing difficult in assembling such a system. It is enough to connect the supplied cables and perform a few more steps. Let’s consider the connection using the example of the D-Link KVM-221 switch.
- We connect VGA and audio cables to each computer. The first one connects to the corresponding connector on the motherboard or video card.
If it is not there (this happens, especially in modern systems), you need to use an adapter depending on the type of output. DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort.
Audio cord plugs into line-out on built-in or discrete audio card.

Connect the monitor, acoustics and mouse with a keyboard to the corresponding connectors on the opposite side of the switch. After that, you can turn on computers and start work.

Remote access software
You can also use special programs such as TeamViewer to view and manage events on another computer. The disadvantage of this method is that it depends on the operating system, which significantly reduces the number of functions available in “hardware” control tools. For example, using software, you cannot configure the BIOS and perform various actions during boot, including from removable media.

As mentioned earlier, the second computer helps to work fully, while the first is engaged in high-resource tasks. It is not always convenient to change to another monitor, especially since there may be SIMply no place in your room to install a second system. The second monitor may also not be at hand for a number of reasons, including financial ones. This is where special equipment comes to the rescue.
