Using FreeSync with Nvidia Graphics Cards

To the surprise of many, Nvidia has stepped back from its stronghold of G-Sync and allowed Nvidia GPU owners to use adaptive sync across a wide range of FreeSync-capable monitors. This feature was announced during CES 2019 by CEO Jensen Huang and was included in the latest GeForce drivers this week.

You might argue, “wide range is too loud, because Nvidia only announced support for 12 monitors!” But actually it is not. Nvidia’s statement about this feature is a little misleading, so in this article we will try to clarify this point.

Nvidia driver support for adaptive sync monitors has four levels. Yes four.

First of all, this is G-Sync Ultimate. the new name for G-Sync HDR.

G-Sync Ultimate certified monitors have built-in Nvidia G-Sync HDR and support a full suite of HDR features. G-Sync Ultimate monitors include Acer Predator X27, Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ and new HP Omen X Emperium 65.

These are monitors that have been with us for many years and that include a G-Sync module, but do not support G-Sync HDR. These are adaptive sync monitors that work with and only with Nvidia graphics cards, and are more expensive than their FreeSync counterparts.

Next, let’s move on to the “G-Sync compatible” monitors.

These are the FreeSync monitors that meet all of Nvidia’s stringent requirements. They don’t have a G-Sync module, but they do support the VESA Adaptive Sync standard, so they also work with AMD GPUs. Latest Nvidia drivers allow these certified monitors to run adaptively sync on Nvidia GPUs by default.

So far, Nvidia has announced 12 monitors that are fully G-Sync compatible, a list of which you can see in the picture above. If you own any of these monitors and you have installed the latest Nvidia driver, Adaptive Sync will be enabled automatically and you can use it just like you would with any G-Sync monitor.

According to Nvidia, G-Sync compatibility is still inferior to regular G-Sync. The table below shows that G-Sync monitors are certified with a wide range of image quality tests, full variable refresh rate (VRR) range, Variable Overdrive persistence, and factory color calibration. However, nothing prevents any G-Sync compatible monitor from being factory calibrated too or from having a full VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) range. It’s just that Nvidia doesn’t require these conditions from the manufacturer in order to get the “G-Sync compatible” sticker, while G-Sync monitors must have these features.

And finally, the fourth level, which Nvidia only mentions in passing, is the ability to use any FreeSync or VESA Adaptive Sync monitor with an Nvidia video card using a switch on the Nvidia control panel.

According to Nvidia, this applies to those “VRR monitors that have not yet been tested for compatibility with G-Sync,” and when enabled, “it may work, or it may work partially or not at all.” Of course, only certified monitors are guaranteed to work, and according to Nvidia’s results. 12 monitors supported out of 400 tested. your chances may look bleak, but the drivers do not limit you and in fact all adaptive sync monitors are supported. All you have to do is enable the feature in the settings.

During its presentation at the show, Nvidia tried to convince people that their program for certifying G-Sync compatible monitors is necessary, as uncertified monitors are allegedly rife with problems. They demonstrated flickering and dying monitors, trying to tarnish the entire FreeSync ecosystem with these examples. Nvidia says its G-Sync certified compliant monitors don’t have these issues, while any uncertified monitors may.

As soon as we saw this, we immediately considered this statement nonsense. Simply because the problems demonstrated have nothing to do with the FreeSync or VESA Adaptive Sync standards; they are not problems inherent in technology. These are just problems related to the quality of monitors. It’s no secret that some FreeSync monitors, especially early models, are not very good and do have flaws such as flickering even on AMD GPUs.

But these monitors are just rubbish. It seems to us that if you buy a monitor that flickers or goes blank, then such a defective product will simply be returned. Of course, there is a possibility that adaptive-sync monitors that run great on AMD GPUs will have some kind of issue on Nvidia GPUs. And then it would be possible to reproach Nvidia for inappropriate implementation of support for adaptive synchronization, but, as in all implementations, some errors and problems are always possible.

Enabling G-Sync on FreeSync Monitor

First, let’s take a look at exactly how you enable adaptive sync support for uncertified monitors. Open Nvidia Control Panel, go to Set up G-Sync and select your FreeSync monitor. Then make sure both Enable G-Sync, G-Sync compatible and Enable settings for the selected display model are checked. The second checkbox will not appear if your monitor is a G-Sync certified monitor. Then click “Apply” and your monitor will turn on with adaptive sync.

In some cases, you may need to go to the Manage 3D settings and select G-Sync Compatible from the Monitor technology drop-down list, but this was not required on all monitors we tested. It’s also important to note that FreeSync must be enabled on the monitor itself (usually via the OSD menu). Some monitors have a toggle that allows you to turn FreeSync on / off or adaptive sync, you need to set it to “on”.

And one last note. Unlike G-Sync monitors that work with Nvidia GPUs up to the GeForce 600 series, G-Sync compatible and FreeSync monitors only work with Nvidia GTX 10 or newer. We tested many monitors with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, but all other Pascal cards should work as well. We believe this is because Pascal is the first GPU architecture to support both adaptive sync and G-Sync, while older architectures only supported G-Sync.

Testing FreeSync on GeForce

So far, we’ve tested seven FreeSync monitors with an Nvidia GPU. All of these monitors have been tested by us before and have shown flawless performance with AMD GPUs. So no flickering, dimming or other problems. They work fine. We would like to test more monitors, given that there are over 500, but so far we only have these seven at our disposal. Nevertheless, this is a pretty good sample size today.

The purpose of testing was to find out if there are any differences between enabled and disabled adaptive sync with an Nvidia GPU, and if there are differences compared to a FreeSync monitor connected to an AMD GPU. This involved testing the monitor in the frame rate range to see how it behaves within and outside the refresh rate range.

The first monitor we tested was the Acer KG251QF, a budget 24-inch 1080p monitor with refresh rates ranging from 30Hz to 144Hz. This is a great monitor for the price, and it’s safe to say that we didn’t find any issues with it with adaptive sync enabled on the Nvidia GPU. No flicker, no blanking, nothing like that. It worked exactly the same as when connected to an AMD GPU. So, offset.

The second monitor was the BenQ EL2870U. a 4K 60Hz panel with a narrow 40 to 60Hz refresh rate range. This monitor also performed well, although the refresh range is too narrow to support Low Frame Rate Compensation (LFC). Therefore, when the frame rate dropped below 40, the adaptive sync no longer functioned and there were gaps or delays depending on whether Vsync was turned on or off. This behavior was expected and occurs with AMD GPUs as well. Therefore, we again evaluate the result as successful.

The next monitor was the Viotek GN24C, another 24-inch 1080p monitor, but this time with a VA panel and a 48 to 144 Hz refresh rate range. Again, this monitor worked great and thanks to its wide refresh rate range, it also supported LFC.

Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) is one feature we were particularly curious to see worked properly on GeForce GPUs. If Nvidia was lazy, it would simply turn off adaptive sync when the frame rate drops below 48Hz. However, this is not the case, Nvidia properly supports LFC with monitors that support this feature, so when the frame rate drops below 48 FPS, the monitor operates at multiples of the frame rate, duplicating them.

For example, if the game’s frame rate is 37 FPS, the monitor will refresh at 74 Hz, showing each frame twice. So it’s nice to see that one of the key adaptive sync features that Nvidia happily applies to G-Sync monitors also works here without any restrictions.

Two other monitors showed a similar result: the AOC C27G1, a 27-inch 1080p monitor with a 48 to 144 Hz refresh range, and the Viotek GN32LD, a 32-inch 1440p monitor, also with a 48 to 144 Hz refresh range. Both monitors worked fine, including in LFC mode.

Then came the turn of the Philips Momentum 43, a 43-inch 4K monitor with 48 to 60Hz refresh range and HDR support. It has no LFC due to its narrow refresh rate range, but otherwise this panel worked as expected without issue.

We are pleased to note that adaptive sync support works even with HDR enabled; the choice of one or the other is independent, HDR does not affect adaptive sync capabilities, which is good news for anyone interested in an HDR monitor but doesn’t want to buy a G-Sync Ultimate display.

One of the FreeSync monitors we tested refused to work with adaptive sync on an Nvidia GPU, but this isn’t a big surprise. This is because the Viotek NB24C only supports adaptive sync over HDMI, while Nvidia GPUs only support adaptive sync over DisplayPort. AMD GPUs can do adaptive sync over both HDMI and DisplayPort, so this monitor has adaptive sync with AMD GPUs, but not Nvidia GPUs.

The lack of adaptive sync over HDMI will also disappoint those looking to pair Nvidia GPUs with a number of FreeSync TVs hitting the market in recent years. Most FreeSync TVs only have HDMI ports, so again, Nvidia GPU owners will be left out.

So, of the seven monitors we tested, six showed flawless results, and the seventh was not going to show them, since it needs FreeSync over HDMI, which Nvidia does not support. Also, it would not hurt to check how well low frame rate compensation (LFC) and HDR will work with adaptive sync on Nvidia GPUs, as they work on AMD GPUs.

Do monitors that pass our testing have to be certified as G-Sync compatible? It’s hard to tell without knowing Nvidia’s rigorous testing guidelines. However, any monitor without LFC support will automatically play. there are many such FreeSync monitors without LFC, including the two we tested today. But I think it’s only important to emphasize that you don’t need to purchase a “G-Sync compatible” monitor to have adaptive sync with your Nvidia graphics card. Purchasing a “G-Sync compatible” monitor will ensure proper operation and support for features such as LFC, but regular FreeSync monitors will also work fine.

As for the weak points. We don’t have any of those twelve “G-Sync compatible” monitors to test and compare, but having tested many G-Sync monitors in the past, we got the same excellent results with non-FreeSync certified monitors. The “G-Sync Compatible” badge simply provides a certain level of quality that you won’t get with, say, the cheapest FreeSync models.

If you are wondering about input lag, we did not find a noticeable difference in its value between enabled and disabled adaptive sync on Nvidia GPUs. Enabling adaptive sync doesn’t appear to increase processing time on the GPU side, be it Nvidia or AMD.

You are not limited to just one display with adaptive sync support. you can use multiple such displays connected to the same Nvidia GPU, but adaptive sync will only work on one of them at a time. This is unlikely to be a problem for most people, but let’s say you have two games running on two different adaptive-sync displays, in which case only one of those monitors will receive an adaptive sync signal from the corresponding game.

We have not tested any FreeSync 2 monitors in conjunction with an Nvidia GPU, as FreeSync 2. is just an AMD-only HDR pipeline that allows a game to interact directly with the monitor for HDR processing with the lowest latency, and therefore is unlikely to be work with Nvidia GPUs. However, as we mentioned, this won’t stop normal HDR from working in conjunction with adaptive sync on Nvidia GPUs. So those who have bought or are about to buy a FreeSync 2 monitor will get HDR functionality, not HDR FreeSync 2, which only a few games support.

To summarize, it’s worth recognizing that Nvidia’s decision to support FreeSync is a good thing for consumers and the industry as a whole. Hopefully this will give owners of the most popular GPUs on the market a significant increase in the selection of adaptive sync monitors available. Why pay extra for a G-Sync module when there is an equivalent FreeSync, but before worrying about VRR technology, first make sure that the gaming monitor you buy is truly of a high quality standard.

What is AMD FreeSync

How to enable FreeSync on the monitor

Gaming monitors have proprietary software in which you can actually enable AMD FreeSync. For example, the OnScreenControl app for LG monitors. Or directly in the interface (menu) of your monitor. On mine you can only change the response time.

As previously stated, my Samsung S24B350 monitor does not support AMD FreeSync. Fortunately, we managed to add support for the technology using the Custom Resolution Utility. And the drivers found the monitor, but with FreeSync support (or DP Adaptive-Sync).

Why G-Sync doesn’t work and how to enable it

  • First, you need to update the NVIDIA drivers for the video card to the latest version (at least 418.91!). Specialist. utilities to help;

G-Sync and FreeSync are very impressive technologies that are considered almost indispensable for PC gamers looking for the perfect high refresh rate gaming experience. What’s more, adaptive sync can also help at the other end of the spectrum, reducing the impact of low frame rates on the visual outcome of the game. With G-Sync and FreeSync, even low frame rates can be significantly smoother than normal output without any adaptive sync technology. This can help a lot if the graphics card is not powerful enough to maintain a stable 60fps in a specific game at a specific resolution.

Nvidia G-Sync

G-Sync is Nvidia’s brand of adaptive sync technology. It works in much the same way as AMD’s FreeSync method, but Nvidia has added a few more steps to further personalize the process. While AMD FreeSync works over both HDMI and Displayport, the Nvidia G-Sync standard uses Displayport cable technology exclusively. importantly, however, there are now different types of G-Sync available in monitors.

G-Sync is now available in 3 different “flavors” for monitors. There is the G-Sync standard, which requires a separate separate G-Sync module to be installed on the monitor in order to make good use of the adaptive sync technology, and there is also G-Sync Ultimate, which also requires this module and more. rigorously tested and certified to provide the highest level of G-Sync capabilities. These hardware modules add to the cost of the display itself, and therefore FreeSync monitors are generally cheaper than G-Sync monitors in the same specification categories. The performance of these two technologies is more or less the same.

There is another really interesting type of G-Sync implementation called the G-Sync Compatible technology.

These monitors do not have the hardware module found in other G-Sync monitors, so they are also cheaper than the more expensive G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate monitors. G-Sync compatible monitors can take full advantage of G-Sync using traditional Adaptive Sync scalers such as FreeSync. In fact, Nvidia has only certified a few monitors as “G-Sync compatible”, but many FreeSync monitors on the market right now work great with G-Sync when paired with an Nvidia GeForce graphics card.

Differences Between G-Sync Compatible, G-Sync and G-Sync Ultimate

A full list of certified monitors that are compatible with G-Sync can be found hereHowever, this is a relatively short list, with only a handful of monitors from a few brands. However, a large number of FreeSync monitors (and other Adaptive Sync monitors) have been tested to work flawlessly with G-Sync in a few simple steps in conjunction with an Nvidia graphics card. If you have a FreeSync monitor that you want to run G-Sync on, follow the steps given below.

Adaptive sync

So what is adaptive sync? Simply put, adaptive sync is a VESA technology that changes the refresh rate of the monitor in accordance with the FPS generated by the video card. Basically, this technology aims at smoothing the visual output that the user receives by synchronizing the refresh rate of the monitor with the number of frames produced by the video card itself. This technology can have a significant impact on the overall experience of these monitors.

Lack of adaptive sync

There are quite a few issues that can spoil the user experience if the monitor lacks some kind of adaptive sync implementation, be it Nvidia’s G-Sync or AMD’s FreeSync. Typically, either of the two adaptive sync implementations results in a significant improvement in the perceived monitor output. Lack of adaptive sync can lead to the following problems:

  • Screen Tearing: This is a rather annoying artifact that can be very annoying to the visual experience while playing. This usually happens at high frame rates, when the number of frames per second delivered by the video card exceeds the refresh rate of the monitor. The display shows two or more frames in one refresh cycle and the image looks torn with lines visible.
  • Lack of smoothness: The absence of any adaptive sync technology results in a significant decrease in perceived smoothness of movement at the display output. This is due to different frame times in the game combined with a fixed display refresh rate.
  • Substantial slowdowns: If the game’s frame rate is quite low (say, even below 50fps), adaptive sync technologies can help improve the smoothness of the game even at this frame rate by reducing the display refresh rate to match the frame rate provided by the game. This can be useful in very graphics intensive games.

Step by step guide to enable G-Sync on FreeSync monitor

This is a simple step-by-step process to enable G-Sync on your FreeSync monitor. This process can be used to test if G-Sync will work with your FreeSync or Adaptive Sync monitor.

First of all, you must enable FreeSync for the monitor using the monitor’s native controls. You may have to go through several pages of options to find this option. It can also be referred to as “Adaptive Sync”. Make sure you are connected via Displayport and not HDMI when doing this process. This is necessary because while FreeSync does work over HDMI, G-Sync requires a Displayport connection for optimal performance.

Open the Nvidia Control Panel.

Right click on the desktop and open the Nvidia Control Panel. We assume you have an Nvidia graphics card in your system that supports G-Sync and the latest available drivers from Nvidia.

When the control panel opens, you should see “Configure G-Sync” in the left panel of the control panel. Choose this option. If it does not appear, try restarting the control panel or computer. You can also try connecting the Displayport cable to a different port.

After you select the Configure G-Sync option, several options appear on the right side of the control panel. In the first setting, check the “Enable G-SYNC, G-SYNC Compatible” checkbox and also select “Enable for full screen mode.” Click “Apply” and exit the control panel.

The screen may flicker after pressing the “Apply” button, this is normal. We also do not recommend selecting the “Enable for Windowed and Full Screen” option as this will enable G-Sync in unwanted locations such as web browsers where it may not work as intended.

If you have more than one display, you can also change the specific G-Sync setting for individual displays using the second and third options in this window. This window may warn you that the selected display is not confirmed as G-Sync compatible. This message can be ignored as Nvidia has only certified a few monitors as G-Sync compatible.

Test it with the G-Sync Pendulum Demo

After enabling G-Sync, we need to check if it actually works properly. Nvidia has a handy tool for this process on their website. A tool known as the “G-Sync Pendulum Demo” can be downloaded from Nvidia’s website and is the perfect benchmark for our particular scenario.

After downloading and installing the demo, open the “G-Sync Pendulum Demo” executable file. The monitor will switch resolutions and the viewer will be presented with a pendulum scene with multiple sliders and switches. It should be noted here that there will be 3 options in the upper left corner of the screen. The options will be named “VSync”, “No VSync” and “G-Sync”. If G-Sync can be selected successfully, the monitor makes excellent use of G-Sync technology. You can also do further testing with this demo by changing the frame rate and looking for screen tearing or other artifacts while the demo is running.

And voila! Your FreeSync monitor works great with Nvidia G-Sync. Be sure to test the effectiveness of G-Sync in gaming and during long gaming sessions. This will allow you to test the long-term reliability of G-Sync on your specific FreeSync monitor.

AMD FreeSync

FreeSync is AMD’s implementation of adaptive sync technology in which APUs and AMD graphics cards can control the refresh rate of the monitor they are connected to. This allows them to change the refresh rate of the monitor to keep it in sync with the frame rate the card produces in a particular game or 3D application. FreeSync monitors are generally cheaper than their G-Sync counterparts because AMD has not opted for any proprietary module in these monitors, but relies on VESA Adaptive Sync scaling cards built into the displays. However, AMD has assured users that FreeSync branding is only applied after rigorous testing and certification.

This works because G-Sync sometimes feels like its features won’t work properly with your refresh rate and will be disabled.
