How to split the screen into 4 parts using the keyboard
The easiest way to do this is using hotkeys. The Snap function allows you to either split the monitor screen into 2 parts in Windows 10, or to fix 4 working windows. They do not duplicate each other, each window has its own operation.
- After launching the desired program (any), press “Win →” (the button with the arrow to the right). The window will be minimized, taking up half of the desktop.
- Having opened the second program, press “Win ←”. And the second window will move to the other side, and the screen will be divided exactly in half vertically.

Starting and disabling the Snap function
To disable the Windows Snap Assist option, you need to click “Start”, go to settings (gear icon) and find the “System” section. After that:

When setting up two monitors on one computer, Windows 10 usually sees both at once, no additional steps are required, you just need to distribute tasks in the system. The steps are as follows:

- Select “System” in the menu on the screen.
- Go to the “Display” section.

How to adjust screen scaling in Windows 10
The big thing about Windows 10 is that it has a lot of small but important settings for power users. In this guide, we will walk you through setting up screen scaling when using multiple monitors.
Windows 10, like Windows 8.1, provides the ability to adjust DPI scaling (dots per inch) for each monitor using a percentage scale. This great tool gives you more granular control when you use monitors with different resolutions or monitors with the same resolution but different screen sizes. This is much preferable to applying one percent DPI scaling to all of your monitors (which can lead to incorrect display on the screen) as it did in older versions of Windows.
To get started, right-click on any empty space on your desktop and select Display Options at the bottom of the context menu. Alternatively, you can go to the Start menu. Options. System. Display.
As soon as you find yourself there, then consider that half of the work is done. You should see a graphical layout of your monitor layout. In this case, we see two monitors, one of which is located vertically.
Then we go down to the “Scale and layout” section, where you will see a drop-down menu with the inscription “Resize text, applications and other elements” and the selected recommended value. This parameter is of interest to us, but before changing it, make sure that you have selected the monitor for which you want to change the scaling.
In this case, the first monitor is highlighted in dark gray, but we want to change the scale on the second monitor. Therefore, we select it by clicking on it with the left mouse button. Then we select the percentage of scaling we are interested in and apply the changes.
Note: By default, Windows offers 100, 125, 150, and 175 percent (depending on monitor resolution) scaling, but these values may not be suitable for everyone. Therefore, there is also a separate manual setting in the range from 100 to 500 percent.
After we have applied the changes made, Windows 10 may inform you that some applications will need to be restarted to display correctly.
Now in the 4K era, this is no longer so relevant, since many developers initially create their programs taking into account high-resolution displays.
Nevertheless, if you have many old programs installed that have not been updated for a long time, we recommend that you follow this recommendation. If after that there are still problems in displaying the interface, then restart the computer.

Docking at quarter-screen
The changes to Snap feature make it easier to work with large monitors. Similar solutions have already been proposed by various managers for “mosaic” application placement, but Microsoft made this functionality standard and integrated into the operating system out of the box.
To dock the application in the corner of the screen, just drag the window to the corner (and not to the side, as when docking horizontally). To fix each new window, dragging will have to be performed again, here the “assistant” does not work.
But hotkeys can help again. To dock the window, just press the Win arrow horizontally, and then Win the arrow vertically (for example, Win left arrow and Win up arrow will fix the window in the upper left quarter of the monitor).
It is not necessary to fill the entire monitor with applications. For example, you can fix one or two applications at the minimum size on the left, and fill the right side with a single window that will take up the entire allotted space.

How to use the Smart Window feature
Click and drag the first window from the top title bar to the left or right side of the screen and release the window when you see the semi-transparent outlines of the window up to half the screen.

How to use Snap Assist
To dock a window, click on the title bar with the left mouse button and hold down the button while dragging the window. You need to drag the application window to the right or left side of the monitor. When the window enters the docking area, a semi-transparent box appears showing where the application will be docked if the key is released. If you are satisfied with the position of the window, release the mouse. the window will be fixed in the specified area.
The guide frame appears some time after clicking and dragging the window. It is not necessary to wait for it to be displayed. You can save a few seconds by quickly dragging the window to the left or right side of the monitor. The window will also be docked, resized to take up exactly half of the screen area. This part of the functionality works in the same way as it did in earlier versions of Windows. 7 and 8.
Docking by dragging and dropping windows launches a new Windows 10 feature called Snap Assist. The user is shown a panel where all the windows that are currently open are presented. You can click on any of them, and the selected application will automatically go to the second. while free. part of the screen. This approach is much more rational and understandable than the implementation from previous versions of the operating system (each of the windows had to be fixed “manually”, repeating the manipulations with selecting an application and dragging to the desired part of the screen). To do this, use a combination of Win (key with the Windows logo) and an arrow (right or left, depending on which part of the screen you want to send the application to). However, using the Snap Assist functionality with such a fix will not work. it is available only when the windows are fixed by dragging.
Another difference. for the better. from Windows 8 is that “universal” applications can be pinned in the same way as “classic” ones. In Windows 10, they work in “system” windows, obeying the general rules.
Presentation of tasks
The new Task View feature is similar to Flip, but works slightly differently. To open Task View, click on the icon in the lower left corner of the screen, in the taskbar. Alternatively, you can press the Windows Tab keyboard shortcut to bring up Task View. A screen will appear where all open windows will be visible and you can click on any window to select.
Smart windows feature in Windows 7
The Smart Window feature allows the user to view two windows side by side in Windows 7 without having to manually resize the window. This is useful if you don’t want to use Alt-Tab to switch between two windows, or you need to work with two windows at the same time. Below is an example of how it looks on Windows 7.
Instead of keeping all windows on one desktop, you can move some windows to the virtual desktop. This is a new feature in Windows 10 that was not available in previous versions, and is especially useful for managing many windows at the same time. To create a new desktop, open Task View and then select Create Desktop in the lower right corner.

Setting up a second external monitor connection in Windows 10

After Windows boots up, nothing will change on the laptop screen, the external monitor will be blank or an inscription will flicker on it that it is not connected, that there is no signal, the speakers will be silent. This is because we have not configured anything yet.
Let’s move on to setting up. To do this, on a free space on the Windows 10 desktop, right-click to bring up a menu. In this menu we select the option “Screen Options” (Fig. 8).
The display setup window opens. To set up an external monitor, you need to switch to the second monitor, the monitor with number 2, which is shown in Fig. 9.
After selecting this particular monitor, the picture of the monitor with the number 2 will turn blue, and the picture of the main monitor with the number 1 inside will become gray. This means that all the monitor setting options below are now assigned to the second, external monitor.
Let’s consider what settings can be set for the second monitor:
In the settings of the external (second) monitor (Fig. 10), you can set:
1) brightness. by moving the lever to the left (weaker) or right (brighter),
2) night light. by on / off switch,
3) scale. in Fig. 10 shows that it costs 100% (recommended), but it can be increased to make the image larger,
4) resolution. in Fig. 10 shows that Windows 10 prompts you to set the default resolution, which is often the most optimal for an external monitor,
5) orientation. as a rule, landscape orientation is set (with the long part horizontally), although in some cases portrait orientation (with the short part horizontally) will be useful,
6) simultaneous operation of multiple displays (see below).
How to connect a second monitor in Windows 10
Sometimes users are faced with the question of how to connect a second Windows 10 monitor for a stationary computer or an external, also a second monitor for a laptop. This is required for different purposes, for example, for showing slides to the “general public” or for extending the computer desktop to be able to work with a large number of simultaneously open windows.

Let’s consider how to connect a second monitor in Windows 10. But first, an external monitor (for a laptop) or a second monitor (for a computer) must be connected, physically connected to a computer or laptop, and only then set up its operation.
For this, the computer usually has a second port for connecting a monitor. But laptops now usually do not have a VGA port so that you can immediately connect a monitor to it.
In modern laptops, the HDMI port is more often used, but not all external monitors can be directly connected to it. Therefore, first let’s see how you can connect an external monitor to a laptop, and only then return to the question of how to set up an external (second monitor).
Setting up the screen on two monitors
But I decided not to stop there. Then came the setting. This is where the first problem surfaced. Since the resolutions and diagonals of the screens are different, it will not be possible to fully combine them. So I had to adjust to the constraints.
In the display settings in Windows 10, you can select the main monitor. It is desirable for them to make the monitor on the left (Fig. 9). Where the displays will be indicated, you need to drag the first one with the mouse so that it is to the left of the second. The convenience of such an arrangement will show itself when dragging elements and windows from one screen to another.
The downside of using two monitors was that desktops, like taskbars, are not independent of each other. it’s just a very large desktop that allows you to work on one screen and enable YouTube or something else on the other.
My next steps were to try to set the optimally related screen resolution. In my case, it was not crowned with success, since the resolutions and aspect ratios of the screens were very different. It was decided to leave the screen resolution in its original state.
Then I moved on to the screen display options. There were only four of them:
- display only on the first and
- display only on the second.
I chose the second option. expanding the screens, thereby combining the two screens into one. But if necessary, at any time you can switch the display mode through the settings panel (the “Display” tab), so you can safely experiment with this function. You can also use the keyboard shortcut by using the keyboard shortcut Windows and P (English).
4 Show only on the second screen
The option (shown by number 4 in Fig. 11) also speaks for itself. The image will be visible only on the second external monitor, and the main monitor will be turned off, as it were.
This option is used if the laptop is used in the system unit mode, when all work is carried out only from a large external monitor, and not on a small laptop screen.
True, in this case, you will also have to connect an external keyboard and an external mouse to the laptop, that is, “in full” turn the laptop, which already has all the built-in devices, into a system unit to which you need to connect external devices.
Also, this option is used by those who, for one reason or another, do not have the main monitor, and there is no opportunity to repair the laptop, or it already makes no sense due to its obsolescence. In this case, the use of an external monitor can prolong the life of such a laptop for a long time.
For a stationary PC, this option allows you to display the image only on the second additional monitor, if it is needed for one reason or another, which cannot be remembered right away. Most often, after all, on a stationary PC, they use the three previous options.

Next comes the setting of the desktop background. The image set as the desktop wallpaper will be the same on both screens even if the display is expanded, that is, it will not be stretched, but duplicated.
In order for the image to be stretched on both screens, you need to go to the personalization settings and select “Expand” in the choice of image placement. This completes the basic setup.
I have listed the minuses, but the pluses, such as comfort at work, cannot be expressed in words.
If possible, it is still better to use monitors with the same diagonal and the same resolution. Thanks to this, the picture will be displayed better, and the setting will be simpler, since you do not have to “play” with the resolution.

Note: If the cable is used with an adapter, it must be connected in advance. If you are using VGA-VGA or DVI-DVI cables, remember to tighten the fixing screws tightly.
After waiting for the operating system to start, you can proceed to the next stage.
To solve our today’s task, several important conditions must be met.
- The presence of an additional (free) connector on the video card (built-in or discrete, that is, the one that is currently in use). It can be VGA, DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort. A similar connector should be on the second monitor (it is desirable, but not necessary, and we will tell you why later).
Note: The conditions we have voiced above and below (within the framework of this particular step) have nothing to do with modern devices (both PCs or laptops, and monitors) with USB Type C ports. All that is required to connect in this case is the presence of appropriate ports on each of the members of the “bundle” and directly the cable.
If on the video card you have a free connector of one type (for example, DVI), and on the connected monitor there is only outdated VGA or, conversely, modern HDMI, or if there is simply no possibility of connecting equipment to the same connectors, you will additionally need to get a corresponding adapter.
Note: Laptops usually lack a DVI port, so you will have to “reach consensus” with any other standard available for use, or, again, by using an adapter.
Connecting and setting up two monitors in Windows 10
Despite the high resolution and large diagonal of modern monitors, for solving many tasks, especially when they relate to working with multimedia content, additional working space may be required. a second screen. Optional: Fast switching between display modes
If, when working with two displays, you often have to switch between display modes, you do not need to refer to the above “Settings” section of the operating system every time. This can be done in a much faster and easier way. Press the “WINP” keys on the keyboard and select the appropriate mode from the four available ones in the “Project” menu that opens:
- Computer screen only (main monitor);
- Repetitive (duplicate image);
- Expand (continuation of the picture on the second display);
