How to make icons smaller on the screen

Using keyboard and mouse

Another way to resize desktop icons is by using your keyboard and mouse. This means that these two peripherals must be connected to your PC, so it is mostly limited to those using a desktop PC or laptop.

First, go to your desktop and minimize or close all open applications. To make desktop icons smaller, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and scroll the mouse wheel down.

To enlarge desktop icons, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and scroll your mouse wheel up.

Using the context menu

One of the easiest ways to resize desktop icons in Windows is by using the right-click menu. Right-click (or press and hold if you have a touchscreen) somewhere on an empty spot on your desktop. On the context menu, click or tap View. The first three options you get are Large Icons, Medium Icons, and Small Icons. The dot next to its name indicates the current view. Click or tap the size you want and the desktop icons will resize accordingly.

How to make desktop icons smaller or larger by changing the screen resolution

The third and more radical way to resize desktop shortcuts in Windows is to change the resolution used by your display. precisely, in order to make the icons on the desktop smaller, you need to increase the screen resolution. If you want large desktop icons, you should lower your screen resolution.

However, keep in mind that changing the resolution not only changes the size of the desktop shortcuts, but everything else that appears on the screen. This means apps, text, icons and everything else. Don’t do this if you don’t want to do less or less.

4 ways to enlarge or shrink Windows desktop icons

If you’re a Windows user, it’s almost impossible not to use desktop icons. This is one of the easiest ways to open applications and files without having to dig into the file system. However, this is only true if you can clearly see the icons on the desktop and can click on them. By default, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 display desktop icons at a given average size. While this is the right choice for most situations, for some people the default average size may seem too large or too small. If you want to know how to resize your desktop icons to make them smaller so that more can fit on your screen, or larger for you to see better, read this guide.

NOTE. All methods described in this guide work the same in Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7. For simplicity, we only use screenshots taken in Windows 10.

How to make desktop icons smaller or larger by scaling text, apps, and more

Finally, the fourth way we know to resize desktop icons is to resize your display. Scaling is increasing or decreasing the size of text, applications and other items, including icons on the desktop, so that people using the computer can easily see them.

To reduce the size of the desktop icons, zoom out on the display. To enlarge the icons on the desktop, zoom in on the screen. In Windows 10, these steps are performed in the Settings app. Go to System.> Display.> Scale and Layout.

Desktop icons are one of the fastest ways to open anything on your Windows computer or device. Now you know how to make them smaller or larger so that you can more easily see and find them on your desktop. Before closing this guide, we would like to know if you prefer small or large desktop icons? Do you have a lot of icons and shortcuts on your desktop? Tell us in the comments below.

Context menu

The following method allows you to choose between three standard icon sizes. To do this, right-click on the screen and open the “View” list. Here you will see three zoom options (regular, large and small icons). The default is normal size. Try large and small icons.

make, icons, smaller, screen

If you were careful when adjusting the scale of the icons, you will notice that the text size and the spacing between the labels remain the same. You can change these parameters using third-party tools.

Fourth way

Open “Windows Settings” again, select the “System”. “Display” section. Now we find the line “Resolution”.

Click and see a list of available permissions. The lower the resolution, the larger the icons, and the higher, the smaller the icons.

Since in our case the resolution is set to the maximum, we will not be able to reduce the icons in this way. But if there was a higher resolution in stock, everything would work out.

Stage 2: “Taskbar”

Scaling taskbar buttons and icons is a little more difficult as it is limited by enabling one option in the settings.

Hover over the “Taskbar”, right-click and select the item “Taskbar Options”.

Find the option “Use small taskbar buttons” and disable it if the switch is in the activated state.

Usually, the specified parameters are applied immediately, but sometimes you may need to restart the computer to save the changes.

Another method of enlarging the icons of the “Taskbar” is to use the scaling described in the variant for the “Desktop”.

We have examined methods of increasing icons on the Windows 10 “Desktop”.

Thank the author, share the article on social networks.

Sometimes the user is not satisfied with the sizes of standard elements of the Windows interface. Some of the parameters can be changed using standard OS tools, and you can completely customize the desktop grid using a third-party program. Today we are going to talk about how to make small icons on the Windows 10 desktop. With compact icons and minimal space between them, you can fit more folders and applications. In addition to how to resize shortcuts, the ability to adjust the spacing between them, as well as resizing the icons from the taskbar will be affected.

Resizing with the mouse wheel

Let’s start with the easiest way. First go to your desktop. To do this, just click with the mouse on any area. Now hold down the Ctrl button and start spinning the wheel. After each scroll, the desktop shortcuts will resize. Choose the optimal scale.

Second way

Right-click on an empty spot on the desktop to bring up a context menu. In the menu, select “View”, and then. the size of the icons: large, normal, small.

Hotkeys

The next method involves the use of hotkey combinations. 4 types of size can be set using the keyboard. You need to hold down Ctrl Shift 1. to make the icons very large. This option, by the way, is not in the context menu mentioned earlier.

Other combinations involve keys 2. 3.4. these are large, regular and small icons, respectively.

How to make icons smaller on Windows 10

Every year, the resolutions of computer displays and laptop screens are getting larger, which is why the icons of the system in general and the “Desktop” in particular are getting smaller. Fortunately, there are several methods to increase them, and today we want to talk about those that apply to Windows 10.

Reducing the icons after their size spontaneously increased (or vice versa)

Windows 7, 8, and Windows 8.1 have a combination that allows you to arbitrarily resize your desktop shortcuts. The peculiarity of this combination is that it can be “pressed accidentally” and not even understand what exactly happened and why the icons suddenly became large or small.

This combination is to hold down the Ctrl key and roll the mouse wheel up to zoom in or down to zoom out. Try it (during the action, the desktop must be active, click on an empty space on it with the left mouse button). most often, this is the problem.

Another way to enlarge and shrink icons

If you are using Windows 7 and at the same time you have the classic theme installed (this, by the way, helps to slightly speed up a very weak computer), then you can separately set the size of almost any element, including icons on the desktop.

To do this, use the following sequence of actions:

  • Right click anywhere on the screen and click “Screen Resolution”.
  • In the window that opens, select “Make text and other elements larger or smaller”.
  • On the left side of the menu, select “Change color scheme”.
  • In the window that appears, click the “Other” button
  • Adjust the dimensions you want for the items you want. For example, select “Icon” and set its size in pixels.

After applying the changes made, you will get what you configured. Although, I think, in modern versions of Windows, the last method will be useful to very few people.

Decrease icons on the computer monitor. Method 3

This option is also suitable for a laptop, but there are restrictions on Windows: its use is not possible in every 7th and even 8th version. To make labels or other elements smaller:

  • Right-click / touchpad on the desktop and select what is in your OS version: “Personalization” section or “Screen Resolution”.
  • Select the section you have: to transform text and other elements or to change additional parameters.
  • Click on the item to change the color scheme / color of the window.
  • Select the button “Other” or “Additional design options”.
  • Among the elements, select “Icon” and in the menu on the right, set the size you need and even the font.

Advice. If you have poor eyesight and you need the other way around. to enlarge the icons on the desktop of your PC, use the same methods, choosing the necessary icon settings.

Setting the correct screen resolution.

The second possible option, when you may not be satisfied with the size of the icons, is the incorrectly set screen resolution of the monitor. In this case, not only icons, but all other Windows elements usually look awkward.

  • Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and select “Screen Resolution”.
  • Set the correct resolution (usually, it says “Recommended” next to it. it is best to set it, because it matches the physical resolution of your monitor).

Note: if you have only a limited set of resolutions available for selection and all are small (not corresponding to the characteristics of the monitor), then most likely you need to install the video card drivers.

At the same time, it may turn out that after setting the correct resolution everything has become too small (for example, if you have a small-sized screen with a high resolution). To solve this problem, you can use the item “Resize text and other elements” in the same dialog box where you changed the resolution (In Windows 8.1 and 8). In Windows 7, this item is called “Make text and other elements larger or smaller.” And to increase the size of the icons on the screen, use the already mentioned Ctrl Mouse Wheel.

How to reduce the size of icons on a laptop. Method 1

Usually, the reduction of icons (shortcuts) is necessary when, due to their size, they do not fit on the desktop of a computer or laptop. It happens that the icons themselves have become larger as if by magic. Nothing really supernatural. This means that you accidentally held down the Ctrl key and at the same time rotated the mouse wheel or moved your finger along the touchpad (touchpad) on a laptop.

Fixing everything is extremely simple: perform a series of the same actions, but purposefully:

  • Click the left mouse button on any empty spot on the desktop. If you have a PC with a touchpad, left-click it. All windows, folders, documents at this moment should be minimized or closed.
  • While holding down Ctrl, scroll the mouse wheel (or slide your finger across the touchpad) down.
  • Adjust the size of the icons you need.

Advice. It’s even easier to use the context menu. To do this, you need to right-click the mouse or touchpad on the free space of the desktop and select “View”, and then set the desired icons. True, only 3 fixed options are possible here: small, ordinary and large.

Change the size of the icons on the screen. Method 2

  • Right-click the mouse or touchpad on any empty spot on the working surface of the monitor.
  • Select the “Screen Resolution” section.
  • Install what you need. Usually next to the most acceptable resolution is “Recommended”. Choose these options as they best suit your monitor.

It happens that after changing the resolution, all the elements became too small. In this case, use the section to change the text and other elements. It is located in the same place as the item with permits. In different versions of Windows, it may be called differently, but its essence is the same. Increase the icons in this situation using method (by holding down Ctrl and scrolling the mouse wheel).

How to resize desktop icons

Despite the fact that the Windows operating system is relatively (for example, when compared with the capabilities of GNU / Linux) scarce possibilities for customizing the graphical interface, some of its elements can still be changed. In particular, it is possible to change the size of the icons on the desktop. But some PC users who do not know about the existence of the corresponding function may be perplexed when the icons on the screen have become huge. In this regard, they open a search engine or go to the forum, and ask: why did the icons on the desktop become large.

Advice:

  • There is also an option where you can manually arrange your icons on the desktop to free up the desired space. To do this, you just need to drag them to a place convenient for you.

Important! This option can be used in computers with both Windows and Mac OS.

  • Your PC can handle the task of automatically arranging icons according to various parameters. by type, name, and creation date. To do this, right-click on an empty area of the desktop, in the dialog box that opens, select and click on the “Arrange” section, or there is another option “Arrange icons”. After the performed procedure, you can arrange the icons as you like.
  • It’s easy to resize icons if you have a laptop with Windows 7, 8 / 8.1, 10 operating systems and the ability to support multi-touch pad. In this case, by sliding or spreading your fingers on the panel, you can very quickly change the size of the shortcuts.

How to enlarge (reduce) icons in Windows 8 / 8.1, 10?

If you have Windows 8 / 8.1 or 10 operating system on your PC, then the process of increasing or decreasing icons on the desktop can be done through the Desktop menu.

How to make folders on your desktop larger:

  • Right-click on an empty space on the desktop.
  • Select “Properties”.
  • Go to the “Screen Resolution” tab.
  • Select the item “Resizing text and other elements”.
  • A menu will appear on the left side of the window, where you need to click on the section “Changing the color scheme”.
  • In the dialog box that opens, click on the item “Other”.
  • Select the “Icon” list item and set the desired size in pixels.

In the age of modern technology, every day there is an increase in monitor screens and display resolution, so the icons on the desktop are visually reduced. Small shortcuts become very inconvenient as they become more difficult to hit with a touchscreen. This is especially the most acute problem for people who have impaired vision. Therefore, many users wonder how to enlarge or, respectively, reduce the icons on the desktop of a computer device if they have a Windows or Mac OS operating system. In our article we will try to figure out step by step how to make the shortcuts on the desktop smaller.

Setting the correct monitor resolution

Sometimes a situation arises when you are not satisfied with the size of the icons, that is, the resolution of the monitor screen was incorrectly set. With this option, not only shortcuts, but also all other elements of the Windows operating system look ridiculous and look awkward.

It is very easy to fix this situation. To do this, you need to carry out several operations:

  • Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and select the “Screen Resolution” section.
  • After this procedure, you need to set the correct resolution. Usually, a window labeled “Recommended” opens next to the correct parameters. Ideally, this is the resolution you want to set, as it usually matches the physical characteristics of your screen resolution.

Important! If your PC has access only to a limited set of resolutions, while all of them are small or do not correspond to the physical characteristics of the monitor, then in this case you need to install the video card drivers.

Sometimes, after setting the correct resolution, problems arise that are characterized by too small icons on the desktop screen. This situation can arise when you own a small screen, but at the same time you have a high resolution. To find a way out of this situation, you must use the section “Changing the size of text and other elements”, which is in the same dialog box where the resolution was changed.

Important! This procedure is used for computer devices with the operating system Windows 8, 8.1, 10. If you have Windows 7 or Vista, then to solve this problem, you need to go to the section “Make text and other elements larger or smaller”.

Resizing icons in Windows XP

Let’s take a look at how to make the desktop shortcuts smaller in the Windows XP operating system:

  • Right-click on the desktop area.
  • In the dialog box that opens, at the very bottom, select and click on the “Properties” item. Thus, we get access that allows you to resize the label.
  • Then go to the “Registration” tab.
  • Click on the right corner, which is at the bottom, and click on the “Advanced” button.
  • After that, open the opened list under the “Element”.
  • In the dialog box that opens, select the “Additional design” section, then select the “Icon” insert.
  • Next, you need to change the numbers in the fields under “Size”, and then set the height and width of the icons in pixels.
  • Finally, click on the “OK” button in all open windows.

Universal way

In modern computer devices with the Windows operating system, there is a key combination that allows you to arbitrarily change the set sizes of the shortcut on the desktop. A feature of this procedure is that sometimes, in an incomprehensible way, quite by accident, you can press several keys, and not understand what happened after all and how it happened that the icons on the desktop increased or decreased sharply.

Important! This combination occurs when we hold down the Ctrl key and at the same time rotate the mouse wheel up or down.

  • After that, press the CTRL key and rotate the mouse wheel, while holding the key down:
  • If you rotate the wheel away from you, the icons on the desktop will gradually increase.
  • Correspondingly, when you rotate the wheel away from you, the desktop shortcuts will be smaller.

How to resize icons in Mac OS X?

Let’s see how you can change the size of icons located on a desktop with the Mac OS X operating system:

  • First, you need to right-click on an empty space on the desktop. As a result, a context menu appears.
  • Now select from the menu section and click on the item “Show View Options”.
  • Next, using the slider, adjust the size of the icon.

Important! There is also an option to resize to a resolution from 16 × 16 pixels to 128 × 128 pixels, which are quadrupled.

How to make desktop icons smaller (or larger)

Usually, the question of how to reduce the desktop icons is asked by users who have suddenly enlarged themselves for no reason at all. Although, there are other options. in this manual I tried all possible.

All methods, with the exception of the last one, are the same for Windows 10, Windows 8 (8.1) and Windows 7. If suddenly none of the following does not apply to your situation, please tell in the comments what exactly you have with the icons, and I will try to help. Attention, for Windows 10 I recommend a separate instruction: How to enlarge and reduce icons on the desktop, in Explorer and on the Windows 10 taskbar.

Setting the correct screen resolution

The second possible option, when you may not be satisfied with the size of the icons, is the incorrectly set screen resolution of the monitor. In this case, not only icons, but all other Windows elements usually look awkward.

  • Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and select “Screen Resolution”. Note: Windows 10 does it differently: How to change the screen resolution of Windows 10.

Reducing the icons after their size spontaneously increased (or vice versa)

Windows 10, 8.1, and Windows 7 have a combination that allows you to arbitrarily resize your desktop shortcuts.

Thanks a lot, your advice helped me

Thank you so much! These giant icons were already pissed off!

thank you so much! Everything is very clear! You are real helpers and teachers!

Through the menu with the right mouse button on the desktop. change the view parameters (do not snap to the grid, small icons)? Well, judging by the question, you are doing it. In general, I do not know yet and have not encountered the situation personally, while you are the second person who writes with this problem.

Dmitry I am the third who has the same problem, and there are many of them in all forums, and it started about a week after installing the wines 10. I checked for viruses, clean. It seems like a confrontation between wines 10 and node 32, it was he who stood, the solution to the problem was to change the value in the registry, but then a new problem surfaced, I can not change the registry value, I tried to change the administration rights, as it turned out I can’t do this. Deleted the node, no changes. Looking further And also, I want to express my deep gratitude for your work, because thanks to your site, I found so much really useful information!

Same. In Windows 8, I changed the names of the shortcuts. the length of the text increased, and, accordingly, for some reason, all the shortcuts on the screen decreased. I just can’t get it back. With or without permission.

Thank! Indeed, a left click on the desktop and simultaneous rotation with the mouse wheel changes the size of the icons. (Windows 10).

Good evening! Tell me how to change the font and increase its size when working on the Internet? After Windows flew, they reinstalled, but the font is completely different: the letters are somehow pale, not bright, small, as if written without pressure, thin.

Thank you very much for the advice, otherwise I have been suffering for two days already, I thought that there were some problems with the resolution!

Thank you very much. I suffered so much with the settings, and the first way to solve the problem immediately helped.

Thank you for reminding me how to do this.

thank you very much, the first way helped

woke up next to the PC. from Budun I saw 4 icons on the screen instead of 30. at first I thought the roof rolled down. I read the article, I corrected everything with a counter and a mouse. to be honest, I did not know about such a trick. Respect and respect to the author. helped to believe that the office was in place and not collapsed.

Can I somehow turn off the pinch scaling of the icons on the touchpad? It sometimes triggers falsely and the icons fly everywhere, and I like them to be located in a certain place. I don’t want to turn off the pinch zoom function.

I don’t know that. In theory, somewhere (in the touchpad utilities) there may be such an option, but I don’t remember that I have met this. only “on”. “off” for the entire system as a whole.

Well done, they explained everything perfectly, thank you very much

Hello. And I don’t have a mouse. Since it happened on a laptop. What to do? In your second tip, I already have a minimum. And the icons are huge

In theory, the Ctrl scrolling gesture should work.
Also, maybe you have something wrong with the set screen resolution (if not only icons, but the text is huge everywhere) or with scaling.

Typical problems

Most often, users are worried about the problem of increasing characters in Internet browsers or text documents, it is no longer possible to make them. Solving such a problem is not difficult. To do this, hold down the “Ctrl” key, and then turn the mouse wheel down. The image will immediately become smaller, but there may be a slight delay. depending on the performance of the computer.

Also, the problem of large shortcuts on the desktop often arises, which cover the entire monitor, and some do not even fit on the screen. To solve this problem, you need to right-click on an empty field, select “View” and put a checkmark in front of “Normal icons”.

There are also situations when some names of panels, menus, and other elements in the Windows system take on an unacceptably large size. It will not be possible to correct this situation with the listed methods.

If you have a problem with the monitor, as in the picture shown, then you must proceed as follows:

  • Follow the path “Start”. “Control Panel”. “Appearance and Personalization”. “Screen”.
  • In the drop-down list below, select the required items and set the required font values (standard 9-11).
  • Click “Apply”.

Here are some simple ways you can make images on a computer smaller.

How to make the screen on a personal computer smaller

Few are wondering how to make the screen smaller on a computer. But when working with a PC, a variety of situations can arise, and you will also need a solution to this issue. After all, it often happens: I pressed something, twisted something, and all the letters suddenly became huge and do not fit on the monitor.

Changing the screen resolution

In fact, it is impossible to make a computer screen smaller, you can only change its resolution. the number of dots per unit area. The standard resolution for computers is different and is set by the size of the monitor. The larger it is, as a rule, the larger and the resolution.

Here, to solve the problem posed, you need to deal with the question that has arisen: do you need to change the screen resolution? Or make the image on the monitor smaller? If you “narrow down the computer monitor”, then the image on it will increase in size and will be uncomfortable for viewing.

In any case, regardless of your goal, you need to take the following steps:

  • On a free space on the desktop, right-click.
  • In the list that appears, select the item “Screen resolution”.
  • In the window that appears, select the drop-down menu “Resolution”, select the option “(Recommended)” or select the required resolution.

Thus, it is possible to make the screen size really smaller by reducing the number of dots per unit area. But it is worth noting that it will not work to set the parameters below the parameters allowed by the computer manufacturer.

The need to make the screen resolution smaller may be required in various situations, the most common of which is the launch of a computer game with weak hardware. The rule works here: the fewer the number of points, the higher the performance.

Additional Information

When you resize icons on the desktop and in Windows 10 Explorer using the described methods, their captions remain the same size, and the horizontal and vertical spacing is set by the system. But this can be changed if desired.

The easiest way to do this is to use the free Winaero Tweaker utility, in which in the Advanced Appearance Setup section there is the Icons item, which allows you to configure:

  • Horizontal spacing and Vertical Spacing. horizontal and vertical spacing between icons, respectively.
  • The font used for captions to icons, where it is possible to select the font itself, different from the system one, its size and style (bold, italic, etc.).

After applying the settings (the Apply Changes button), you will need to log out and log back in for the changes to be displayed. Read more about Winaero Tweaker and where to download it in the review: Customize Windows 10 Behavior and Appearance in Winaero Tweaker.

Resize icons on the Windows 10 desktop

The most common question from users concerns changing the size of icons on the Windows 10 desktop. There are several ways to do this.

The first and rather obvious one consists of the following steps

  • Right click anywhere on the desktop.
  • From the View menu, select Large, Regular, or Small Icons.

This will set the icons to the appropriate size. However, there are only three options available, and adjustment of a different size in this way is not available.

If you need to increase or decrease icons by an arbitrary value (including making them smaller than “small” or larger than “large”), this is also very easy to do:

  • From the desktop, press and hold the Ctrl keys on your keyboard.
  • Roll the mouse wheel up or down to increase or decrease the size of the icons, respectively. If you do not have a mouse (on a laptop), use the touchpad swipe gesture (usually up and down on the far right of the touchpad or up and down with two fingers at the same time anywhere on the touchpad). The screenshot below shows both very large and very small icons at once.

In the explorer

In order to resize icons in Windows 10 Explorer, all the same methods are available that were described for desktop icons. Additionally, in the “View” menu of the explorer there is an item “Huge icons” and display options in the form of a list, table or tile (there are no such items on the desktop).

When you increase or decrease the size of icons in Explorer, there is one peculiarity: only the sizes in the current folder are resized. If you want to apply the same dimensions to all other folders, use the following method:

  • After setting the size that suits you in the explorer window, click on the “View” menu item, open “Options” and click “Change folder and search parameters”.
  • In Folder Options, open the View tab and click the Apply to Folders button in the Folder View section and agree to apply the current display options to all folders in File Explorer.

After that, in all folders, the icons will be displayed in the same form as in the folder you configured (Note: works for simple folders on disk, to system folders, such as Downloads, Documents, Pictures and other parameters will have to be applied separately).

How to resize icons in Windows 10

Icons on the Windows 10 desktop, Windows Explorer, and the taskbar are “standard” sizes that may not be suitable for all users. Of course, you can use the scaling options, but this is not always the best way to resize labels and other icons.

This guide details how to change the size of icons on the Windows 10 desktop, in File Explorer and on the taskbar, as well as additional information that you may find useful, such as how to change the font style and font size of icons. May also be helpful: How to change font size in Windows 10.
