How to make shazam appear on the screen
Change the default language on the Windows 10 welcome screen
Today I came across a comment that ended with the following: “But how to change the language for the password to English on the Welcome Screen remains a mystery.” In today’s article, we will answer this riddle and describe where to go and what to change to make the desired language on the default welcome screen.
This article is a continuation of the general article on changing language settings in Windows 10.
How to change the language on the welcome screen
In this example, we will change the language on the welcome screen from Russian to English.
Go to the menu “Start” = “Settings” = “Devices” = on the left side select “Enter”, on the right side click on “Advanced keyboard settings”
Next to “If you want to change the input method” select the language you want to see on the welcome screen.
Go to the menu “Start” = “Settings” = “Time and language” = “Language” = “Administrative language settings”.
In the “Advanced” tab and select “Copy parameters”.
4.Next “Copy current settings to” put a check mark in the “Welcome screen and system accounts” box, then click “OK”.
That’s it, now you can lock the screen (or restart your computer) and you will see that the default language that you need is set on the welcome screen. If there are additions. write comments! Good luck
I don’t know what you did and how you did it, but I just checked it and everything works!
This is Exclusive
FOR OLD OS VERSION.
The first paragraph of the instructions says “If you have Windows 10 v1803 or higher.“, you just look at the pictures, and then it says what to do in new versions.
Can you please tell me if it is possible to make the default language on the welcome screen English, and after entering the password, when the desktop is already visible, the default input language is Russian? If possible, how?
Do everything according to the instructions, then return to the 5th point and select Russian.
Naturally, this doesn’t work. As soon as we select Russian on the 5th point, it immediately becomes the default language in the greeting.
It works only if you check the box “Allow to select input method for each application”.
But this will give rise to another problem. The language bar will disappear when you switch layouts in the document search slacks on the local \ network drive.
It does not work if Russian was selected during forced blocking or session blocking during idle time, then Russian will also be displayed on the login screen.
Question: how to make sure that only English is always on the lock screen and no more, tk. all the same, all passwords are entered in the English layout.
I ask you to double-check everything you have done, maybe you did not do some point. I just did everything according to the instructions, chose the Russian layout language and locked the computer with the AltL key combination, on the login screen the language is English, that is, the one I chose. I have the latest version of 10k installed, as well as in early assemblies everything works.
The version is definitely the latest, but with the command there is a WinL typo
That’s just the point: if you block the language it switches (on the English greeting on the slave desk), and if you reboot, it doesn’t switch.
I selected Russian on the taskbar, rebooted the computer, and English on the login screen. Try disabling Fast Startup and tell me what language will be on the login screen. Most likely, by disabling Fast Startup on the login screen, you will see the English language, after which you can enable Fast Startup. If these steps did not help you. write me your version of Windows 10 (for example, Windows 10 Home, version 1709).
There is such a bug, everything is assigned to English, but when you turn it on, the layout is still RUS, but if you wait 30 seconds until the clock turns on again, then the language will already be English. The problem is solved by disabling the welcome screen, the password entry window immediately appears and immediately the ENG layout.
This can be done through the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc):
“Administrative Templates” → “Control Panel” → “Personalization”. “Prevent the display of the lock screen” set “Enabled”
Or in the registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Personalization]
“NoLockScreen” = dword: 00000001
Disabled fast startup. All the same, after turning on the laptop, the welcome screen in Russian. I went to the regional settings (item), the welcome screen was reset to Russian. (Windows 10 Home for one language, version 1607).
Please show a screenshot of the 8th item screen. You have Russian around the input language?
Item: Current user input language: English (US).US. Welcome Screen. Input Language: English (US). USA.
New User Accounts. Input Language: US English. US. After going to the item and setting “Russian” Current user input language: Russian (Russia).Russian. Welcome screen. input language: English (USA). USA. New user accounts. input language: Russian (Russia).Russian. After off. and incl. laptop: Current user. input language: Russian (Russia).Russian. Welcome screen. input language: Russian (Russia).Russian. New user accounts. input language: Russian (Russia).Russian.
PS Item English instead of “available language pack” I have. “allowed to use only one language pack”
I made screenshots but could not transfer (attach), sorry.
Please tell me is your Windows activated? 1607 due to the fact that you have disabled updates?
Updates for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based systems are coming automatically
and are installed without errors? Try updating your system using a tool from Microsoft. And say about the activation account, right-click on the start menu and select “Run” (or press the winr keys) and enter the control system command and then click ok.
Windows activation completed. Updated system 1709. No change to welcome screen language.
The most important answer was not given: How to make these parameters remain after a reboot. Well, or how to apply these parameters to 400 computers within a radius of 1 km. Without GPO, this is usually pointless mouse clicking.
Dear Rami, these parameters remain with most users (including me) after a reboot! If yours is not so. most likely the side is in your 10k assembly and you need to dig there! At the expense of setting these parameters on 400 computers. perhaps in group policies this can be done but in the corporate version 10ki. And usually the administrator installs the system, tests everything, makes an image and then scatters it on all machines, from scratch no one puts them on each one. Yes, you can forget, but if for some users this is really critical, you can use various programs for remote control and fix it in a minute, also if the staff of 400 computers is served by more than one person, and a password can be created with the Russian layout.
Contacted Microsoft support with this problem,
could not answer
Thank you, everything is detailed. Everything worked out!
How to show all local users on the Windows 10 login screen?
In Windows 10 / 8.1, you can list the available local accounts on the system welcome screen. To log in to the computer, the user just needs to click on the desired account and specify its password.
For Windows to display all local users on the login screen, you need to change the value of the Enabled parameter to 1 in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrenTVersion \ Authentication \ LogonUI \ UserSwitch. You can change this parameter through the graphical interface of the Regedit editor, using the console the “Reg Add” command or the PowerShell cmdlet Set-ItemProperty.
Reg Add HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrenTVersion \ Authentication \ LogonUI \ UserSwitch / v Enabled / t REG_DWORD / d 1 / f
Set-ItemProperty.Path ‘HKLM: \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrenTVersion \ Authentication \ LogonUI \ UserSwitch’.Name Enabled.Value 1
However, Windows automatically resets the Enabled parameter value to 0 every time a user logs on. To keep the key value always 1, the easiest way is to create a new scheduler task that will run when the user logs on.
The scheduler job must run one of the above commands. Such a task can be created manually using the graphical taskschd.msc console. But it seems to me that it is much easier to create a scheduler job using PowerShell. In our case, the commands for creating a new task may look like this:
Trigger = New-ScheduledTaskTrigger.AtLogOn
User = “NT AUTHORITY \ SYSTEM”
Action = New-ScheduledTaskAction.Execute “PowerShell.exe”.Argument “Set-ItemProperty.Path HKLM: \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrenTVersion \ Authentication \ LogonUI \ UserSwitch.Name Enabled.Value 1”
Register-ScheduledTask.TaskName “UserSwitch_Enable”.Trigger Trigger.User User.Action Action.RunLevel Highest –Force
Make sure that the task appears in the Windows Scheduler (taskschd.msc).
Logoff and log the user. The job should automatically start and change the value of the Enabled registry parameter to 1. Check the current value of the parameter. As you can see it is equal to one:
get-ItemProperty.Path ‘HKLM: \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrenTVersion \ Authentication \ LogonUI \ UserSwitch’.Name Enabled
After the next system reboot, the Windows 10 and 8.1 welcome screen will display all local computer user accounts, not just the last username.
There is a separate policy that makes it much easier to list local users on domain computers. Go to the Computer Configuration section. Administrative Templates. System. Logon and enable the policy “Enumerate local users on domain-joined computers”.
How to remove a username from the Windows Welcome screen?
Displaying the account name on the Windows logon screen is convenient for end users, but reduces the security of the computer. After all, an attacker who gains access to a computer can only find a password (for this there are various methods of social engineering, brute force or a banal sticky piece of paper with a password on the monitor).
You can turn off the display of the last username through the GPO. Open the Domain (gpmc.msc) or Local Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) and go to the Computer Configuration section. Windows Configuration. Security Options. Local policies. Security Options (Computer Configuration. Windows Settings. Security Settings. Local Policies. Security Options). Enable the Interactive logon: Do not display last user name policy. This policy is disabled by default.
This policy corresponds to the registry key in the same branch DontDisplayLockedUserId with a value of 3.
Blank username and password fields are now displayed on the computer login screen and Windows lock screen.
Display a list of active domain users on the Windows logon screen
If several users use one computer, you can display on the welcome screen a list of users who have a non-disconnected session (users will be displayed only if they are logged in, for example, when using public computers, cash registers, kiosks, RDS server or its equivalent on Windows 10).
To do this, check that under Computer Configuration. Windows Settings. Security Settings. Local Policies. Security Options disabled policies:
- Interactive logon: Don’t display last signed-in: Disabled
- Interactive logon: Don’t display username at sign in: Disabled
Then disable the policies under Computer Configuration. Administrative Templates. System. Logon:
- Block user from showing account details on sign-in: Disabled
- Do not enumerate connected users on domain-joined computer: Disabled
After that, the welcome screen will display a list of accounts with active sessions that have logged in but have been disconnected. The user only needs to log in once, and then simply select an account from the list and enter the password.
How to show / hide usernames from the Windows 10 welcome screen?
In Windows 10 / 8.1 and Windows Server 2016 / 2012R2, the login screen (welcome screen) by default displays the account of the last user who logged into the computer (if the user does not have a password, the system will be automatically logged in under this user, even if the autologon function is not set). You can configure different behavior of this function on the logon screen: you can show the username, hide it, or even display a list of all local or active domain users of the computer (server).
How to hide a specific user from the Windows Welcome screen?
The Windows Welcome screen displays users who are members of one of the following local groups: Administrators, Users, Power Users, Guests.
You can hide any user from the list on the Windows 10 welcome screen by running the command:
reg add “HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrenTVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList” / t REG_DWORD / f / d 0 / v UserName
How to make a VirtualBox virtual machine full screen
Immediately after installing the operating system on the VirtualBox virtual machine, it is available to the user in a small window. This window can be enlarged by changing the screen resolution, but this is not always enough. For full-fledged work, you often need to open the VirtualBox virtual machine full screen.
This article is devoted to this issue. Here you will learn how to make VirtualBox full screen in case of Windows and Linux operating systems.
How to make VirtualBox full screen on Windows
If you want to open the VirtualBox virtual machine in full screen, then first you need to install the add-ons for the guest system. Without this, the full screen mode will not be able to adjust to your screen resolution and will be inconvenient to use. In addition, without additions for the guest system, many other functions of the VirtualBox program will not work, they may not work.
To install the add-ons, start your Windows virtual machine, open the “Devices” menu and select the “Mount Guest OS Add-ons disk image” option.
After that, a CD-drive with VirtualBox software will appear in your virtual system.
Open this disk and run the VBoxWindowsAdditions program. This is the installer with which you will be able to install guest add-ons (in case of Windows).
Next, the installation of the add-ons for the guest system will begin. At this stage, there is nothing difficult, we install the add-ons, like any other program. After the installation is complete, we agree to restart the virtual machine.
That’s all, after the next launch, the VirtualBox virtual machine will be ready to expand to full screen. To do this, just open the “View” menu and select the “Full Screen Mode” option.
After that, a warning will appear with information about the keyboard shortcuts. It is better to read this post carefully so that you do not have problems exiting the full screen mode of the VirtualBox virtual machine. After reading, click on the “Switch” button and the virtual machine opens in full screen.
By default, VirtualBox uses the following keyboard shortcuts:
- Right Ctrl-F. open the virtual machine in full screen.
- Right Ctrl-L. Open Screen Integration Mode.
- Right Ctrl-F. Open Screen Zoom Mode.
How to make VirtualBox full screen on Linux
If you have Linux installed on the VirtualBox virtual machine (for example, Ubuntu, Kali Linux or any other), then the setup procedure will be slightly different.
First you need to install the guest add-ons. To do this, start the virtual machine, open the “Devices” menu and select “Connect the Guest OS Add-ons disk image”.
After that, the disk with the VirtualBox software should automatically mount and the screen will prompt you to open it in the file manager.
We open the disk in the file manager and look at the directory in which it was mounted. In our case, this is “/media/user/VBox_Gas_6.1.4”. In this directory there should be a file “VBoxLinuxAdditins.run”, it is responsible for installing the add-on of the guest system.
To start the installation, the “VBoxLinuxAdditins.run” file must be run through the terminal with Root rights. To do this, open a Linux terminal and run the following command:
Please note that the path to the “VBoxLinuxAdditins.run” file may differ on your system.
After the installation is complete, reboot the virtual machine.
After rebooting, you will be able to open the VirtualBox virtual machine in full screen. This can be done using the “View. Full Screen Mode” menu or by using the keyboard shortcuts.
How to install Russian interface language Windows 10
If a non-Russian-language version of Windows 10 is installed on your computer, and not in the “Single Language” option, you can easily download and install the Russian language of the system interface, as well as enable Russian for Windows 10 applications, which will be shown in the instructions below.
The steps below are demonstrated for Windows 10 in English, but they will be the same for versions with other default interface languages (unless the settings items will be named differently, but I think it won’t be difficult to figure it out). Note: if, after installing the Russian interface language, some documents or programs show incomprehensible characters, use the instruction How to fix the display of the Cyrillic alphabet in Windows 10.
Please note that although the default language for interface elements and input will be Russian, the built-in Windows 10 applications will continue to be named in English. How to fix it. in the corresponding section of the instructions.
Also keep in mind that any blocking of functionality, telemetry, Windows 10 updates may lead to the fact that the download of the language pack will be impossible due to blocking access to Microsoft servers.
How to download the Russian interface language using the control panel
In previous versions of Windows 10, you can do the same using the Control Panel. The first step is to download the Russian language, including the interface language for the system. This can be done using the appropriate item in the Windows 10 Control Panel.
Go to the control panel (for example, by right-clicking on the “Start” button. “Control Panel”), switch the item “View by” to the icons (Icons) and open the item “Language” from the top right. After that, follow these steps to install the language pack.
Note: if the Russian language is already installed on your system, but only for keyboard input, and not the interface, then start from the third point.
- Click “Add a language”.
- Find “Russian” in the list and click the “Add” button. After that, the Russian language will appear in the list of input languages, but not the interface.
- Click “Options” opposite the Russian language, the next window will check for the presence of the Russian language of the Windows 10 interface (the computer must be connected to the Internet)
- If the Russian interface language is available, a Download and install language pack link will appear. Click on this item (you need to be a computer administrator) and confirm the download of the language pack (a little over 40 MB).
- After the Russian language pack is installed and the installation window is closed, you will be returned to the list of input languages. Click on “Options” next to “Russian”.
- The “Windows interface language” section will indicate that Russian is available. Click “Make this the primary language”.
- You will be prompted to log out and log back in so that the Windows 10 interface language changes to Russian. Click “Log off now” or later if you want to save something before exiting.
The next time you log in, the Windows 10 interface language will be Russian. Also, in the process of the steps above, the Russian input language was added, if it was not installed earlier.
Setting the Russian language in the Windows 10 settings
This method essentially duplicates the previous one, the only difference will be where exactly the download of the language pack for the Russian language will be launched. Starting with Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020, for previous versions, the description is presented below), the path for adding a language is as follows:
- Go to Settings, for this you can press the WinI keys on your keyboard.
- Go to Time Language. Language or Region and language.
- In the Windows display language section, you can choose the display language of Windows 10, but usually there is only one language. To add Russian, click “Add a language” in the Preferred languages section.
- Select the Russian language from the list, you can use the search (if there is no Russian input language, enter Russian into the search box), click the “Next” button.
- In the next window there are 4 marks, I recommend leaving the top 2, they will download Russian for Windows 10 and set it as the default language. The next two are responsible for text-to-speech and handwriting. Click the “Install” button.
- Wait until the download and installation of the Windows 10 Russian language is complete, and when asked to log out, click “Yes, sign out now”. When re-entering the system, the language will be Russian.
As a result of these steps, a Russian keyboard will appear in the system, and almost the entire Windows 10 interface will be in the language you need. However, some of the built-in applications will continue to be displayed in their original language. How to fix it. in the corresponding section of the instructions below.
In previous versions of Windows 10, the path will be as follows: Settings (WinI keys). Time and language. Language or Region and language (Settings. Time Language. Region and language). There you need to select the desired language (and if there is no. add it by clicking Add a language) in the “Preferred languages” list and click “Settings”. And already on the next screen, download the language pack for this language (in the screenshot. the download of the English language pack, but the same for Russian).
After downloading the language pack, return to the previous screen “Region and language” and select the desired language in the list “Windows interface language”.
How to enable Russian interface language in Windows 10 applications
To include the Russian language in them too, follow these steps:
- Go to the control panel. “Language” and make sure that the Russian language is in the first place in the list. Otherwise, select it and click the “Up” menu item above the list of languages.
- In the control panel go to “Regional standards” and on the “Location” tab in the item “Primary location” select “Russia”.
- In the latest version of Windows 10, the application display language can be separately set in Settings. Time and language. Language, but the following action may also be required.
Also, in some third-party applications, the interface language can be configured in the settings of the application itself and does not depend on the Windows 10 settings.
Well, that’s all, the translation of the system into Russian has been completed. As a rule, everything works without any problems, however, the original language may be retained in the preinstalled programs (for example, related to your hardware). There are no words for gratitude from a monkey like me) I thought it would be easier to learn English) clearly according to the instructions, Russian letters appeared!
Hello! I have wine10 pro. On the “interface language” tab, one language is stupid, it does not allow you to select anything. although two languages are added at the bottom.
Hello. Did you download the language pack as described? Click on a language that cannot be selected, click on “Settings” there and load the language pack. At the very beginning of the instruction about this.
Thank you for responding. Yes, the language pack has been downloaded and installed. You can write in a language, and you can also lift it up to display sites in this language. Does it help much, I did not check, the main thing for me is to change the interface language.
Or you can take a screenshot from the Options from the “Region and Language” screen at the moment when the language is selected (highlighted), in which you want to make the interface?
YOU know, he was scared of you. I turned it on today, it showed that there was no language pack, whereas on Friday it showed that there is. and there was no option to download it. Now uploaded, everything is in order, thank you very much for your patience.
I did it! 🙂 The interface is already Russian! Cyrillic instead of squiggles! And also the Russian keyboard! 🙂 Many thanks to you for the very useful and valuable information! All the best and prosperity to you!
Thank you, the article helped me to install the Russian language of the Win10 interface!
And on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB, the language also changes to Russian, or are there any difficulties, or “not complete Russian”? This refers to the translation where is English, and where is Russian, or generally kryakozyabry. respectfully.
In theory, everything is the same in terms of languages there should be.
I understand you, thank you. I watched a review from a very well-known and respected author about the installation of this particular version of Windows, and it is shown and told exactly as described in your article. But. caution and even fear will never hurt to ask again. Thanks again, thanks for the answer.
Hello, such a problem, when downloading it asks for a username and password, which I don’t remember, the laptop is Finnish, I bought it with Finnish, but the passwords remained from the previous owner, and I can’t download it, advise what you can do
It may be worth resetting the laptop to factory settings and, accordingly, re-creating an administrator whose password you will know.
Well, or reset the password for the current user (search for “how to reset Windows 10 password”)
Thank you very much, only you could find suitable advice)
No matter what links I follow, in search of answers. only here there are always 100% working instructions on any questions. Thank you so much. 2 mouse clicks, and my programs became in Russian
Good day! Please tell me, when choosing options for the Russian language itself (they have the ability to download packages, voice and other), but these options do not include a package for downloading as in English, so that all Windows is Russified (i.e. keyboard in Russian, region of Russia you can choose, but everything else is in English, in the Russian language options there are fewer items to download than in English) I can send a screenshot to the mail. I would be grateful for your help.
I’m on a trip now, no Windows with me. In 3 days I will be able to see what’s what, not earlier, sorry.
In order not to forget, post a screenshot somewhere and give a link to it in response to this comment.
When I press options, I have checking
Good day, there is a problem with the installation of the Russian interface. I went where I wanted, chose the Language section, added Russian there and went to it for download, but after that nothing was added to the Windows display language list, I can’t select Russian. Please help, thank you!
What edition of Windows 10? I looked at the screenshots, it’s strange. I could not reproduce myself.
Is it possible to change the interface language on Windows 10 home single language
Here the path is described in English: stackoverflow.com/questions/31698742/how-to-change-Windows-10-interface-language-on-single-language-version
Haven’t tried it myself but looks reasonable.
It may not be here, Alexander, but how does your idea with the file work, about disabling updates. the flight continues normally or there is a problem. Please write, otherwise I just can’t get through to you! Regards, Yuri.
Well done guys, super instructions, excellent solutions to issues, tremendous work, thank you very much!
in the language only English is worth, how can Russian be added
Good afternoon Dmitry! Help me please. Thanks in advance.
A similar problem, only my Chinese language became after returning to the standard settings. Only the keyboard changes. Language packs are not downloaded and, in my opinion, not even into me.
I tried to install language packs from the command line and gave an error. I went through the registry shows that there is only Chinese.
Before the factory reset, there was a normal Russian language pack.
I dropped everything because of the updates, everything began to slow down. I hoped that the updates would fix the error, since the flash drive does not connect via OTG.
Before the reset, it was Windows 8.1. Now hike also.
Everything is clear and accessible! With your help, Win10 was russified. Everything works great! Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Hello. Such a problem: I did everything step by step as written in the instructions, but at the output it was partially translated into Russian, and the rest in English (somewhere 50/50). The laptop was bought in Poland, it was originally Win in Polish. Now everything is mixed up with me: a lot remains in Polish, the rest is in English and Russian (Windows interface, although all this should have been translated into Russian). Please help me how to fix this? Because I can’t even find a description of a similar situation on the Internet.
Unfortunately, there is no particular help here: there really is not everything in the language package, but “almost everything”. Although what you write about 50/50 is also somehow unusual (as a rule, there are very few untranslated things).
Perhaps in the language parameters you need to put Russian in the first place, in the region settings select Russia.
Russians on Screen: From Bond to Gambit
Conversation with Professor of Columbia University Mark Lipovetsky
Alexander Genis: Russians have always been present on the American screen. Once upon a time in pre-war cinema, they appeared in the mandatory accompaniment of balalaikas, gypsies and vodka. Then the first and second became less, but the vodka remained. Our people in Western cinema drink regardless of ranks and circumstances, in the morning and without a snack.
Having watched the evolution of Russian characters for almost half a century, I decided to discuss this evergreen topic, which has become especially relevant in recent years. thanks to the super-successful television series: “Chernobyl” and “Queen’s Gambit”. In both, Russia, or rather the Soviet Union, plays a central role.
Today I invited Mark Lipovetsky, a professor at Columbia University and the organizer of the Russian film club with him, to talk to his heart on these burning topics.
Mark, how the image of the Russian is changing under the pressure of history?
Mark Lipovetsky: Unfortunately, less than we would like. It would seem that there has been no “Iron Curtain” for 30 years, there are plenty of Russians in America, it would seem that you can go to Russia if you wish, but the stereotypes that are inherited from the Cold War, and perhaps they go back to even more distant antiquity, continue to be present at screen, especially on a TV screen.
Alexander Genis: When I arrived in the USA, this is 1977, in America there was still the popular film “The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!” (1966). When we, the third wave, arrived, newspaper articles were published under the headline “The Russians are already here”. The meaning of this film, which I saw much later, boiled down to the fact that the Russians, of course, are animals, for they sent a nuclear submarine to the shores of America, but when the time came to save the child, the Russians turned out to be the same people as everyone else. That is, a kind Russian soul is hiding under the terrible skin of a barbarian, which still peeps through the uniform. This image has always been quite popular. But there is one, I would say, a fundamental exception: James Bond and the special image of the Russian in these films.
What is the legacy of James Bond in Hollywood, and in general in the mass consciousness?
Mark Lipovetsky: I would start from afar. If we are talking about American culture, about American cinema and television, Russians have occupied the honorable role of the “other” who only outwardly resembles a “normal” American person, but in principle is the complete opposite of him. The example that you gave of the famous film “The Russians Are Coming” of the Cold War is just a classic “other” that goes back, I think, to the romantic, if not pre-romantic culture, which was called bon sauvage. Generally speaking, a beast, but sometimes there is something in it, we can recognize as features that are cute to us.
Alexander Genis: It comes from Jean-Jacques Rousseau with his “noble savage”. That is, you think that the Russian on the Western screen is this very “noble savage”?
Mark Lipovetsky: Sometimes noble, but more often not.
Alexander Genis: Let’s remember that the “noble savage” was noble because he was not civilized, this was Rousseau’s idea, his romantic ideal. By the way, the noble savage was looked for in America of the 18th century, where civilization had not yet reached him. It is difficult to call Russians uncorrupted by civilization, especially when Russia threatened to destroy America during the Cold War. They feared her precisely as a potential liquidator of an entire country, which she may well do today.
Mark Lipovetsky: Yes, but this did not stop at all from portraying the Russians as savages, however, not with a club, but with a nuclear missile. That is, completely savage behavior, but multiplied by relatively high technology. In this sense, the James Bond films are characterized by the fact that in them the image of the most perfect Russian monster, the opposite of the human race, naturally opposed the representative of Western civilization in the person of, first of all, Bond himself. This conflict was escalated to grotesque proportions. “Bondiana” is generally a grotesque genre, everything is brought to its limit, as a rule, semi-parody. We remember that “Bondiana” began with parody films, which then began to be filmed more and more seriously. Those Russians, whom we see even in the films of the seemingly perestroika period, where the shooting was carried out (there, if you remember, the tanks in the Golden Eye literally drive around Moscow and destroy most of the historical architecture), the Russians still look like absolutely monstrous creatures, among which, however, sometimes there are some exceptions. These are, as a rule, women, and this is a purely colonial path. There is “Pocahontas”, which, of course, will love the colonist, and everyone else, her parents and brothers. beasts.
Alexander Genis: If Pocahontas, then he will fall in love with the conquistador. But I do not entirely agree with you, I specifically revised the classic James Bond series of the Cold War before our conversation. It seems to me that everything is not so simple. Russians are presented here in two forms: either they are, as you absolutely rightly said, monsters that go beyond the borders of humanity, or they are cunning, experienced, clever villains with whom James Bond and all Western intelligence are constantly fighting. But I would say that this is a duel, the king’s musketeers and the cardinal’s guards. In these films there is a certain parity between good and evil, it lies in the fact that it is bad to live with Russians on the same planet, but it is possible. And this is the essence of the Cold War, which therefore did not turn into a hot war. All sorts of KGB generals who bear the literary names of the Russian classics, in the final analysis, are also for peace. After all, what is the essence of the duel? Why was D’Artagnan, for example, taken and hit with a stick? Because a stick is not a duel, it is a fight. But here, nevertheless, it was about equals, both sides had ingenious technology, and only some idiots are trying to break all this technology and upset the balance of power.
It seems to me that it was in this capacity that James Bond was a true hero of the Cold War. Then everything changed, because perestroika radically changed the nature of evil. How did perestroika affect the image of the Russian?
Mark Lipovetsky: Again, it didn’t work, in my opinion, except that the savage became a little nobler. It seems to me that a radical shift in the image of, relatively speaking, the Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet world occurs only in the series “Chernobyl”. This is an amazing turn of the steering wheel, which is different from anything I have seen in the past and present.
Alexander Genis: We will return to “Chernobyl” later. But for now I want to dwell on the period of perestroika, because for the first time many Russians appeared with it, not only on the screen, but also simply in America. In the 1990s, Russians appeared in Hollywood, both on the screen and on TV, everywhere, these Russians already speak without an accent, correctly, and “fuck with the hair dryer.” The new image of Russians has led to the fact that on the screen all women from Russia are only prostitutes named Natasha. I have a friend’s daughter Natasha, she says: “At least change her name”.
But with men, everything became more interesting. I remember how the wonderful Law & Order series flourished in the 1990s, one of the best on American television, where the Russian theme appeared. Russian gangsters who interfere with American justice tell the prosecutor a phrase to remember, they said: “How can you intimidate us if we Russians survived Stalin? What can an American prison do to us after the GULAG?” This is a new turn of the topic, it seems to me. Because now the Russians are not bandits with an atomic bomb, they are just bandits. This is the spirit of the times. Russia is already a mafia superpower, not a superpower with a communist ideology and an atomic bomb. It seems to me that it changed the situation.
But I agree with you on another point, that the archetype has remained the same: Russians on the American screen are always executioners and victims, there are only two options: either it is the executioner, or it is his victim.
Mark Lipovetsky: Yes, I completely agree with that. All the same, the Russian is assigned, I repeat, of course, the role of the “other”. That is, Russian is a contrasting background for some abstract American norm. Whether it’s the image of the Russian as a monster with an atomic bomb or a monster from the mafia.
over, fundamental differences are important. In The Godfather, the mafia is us, the mafia is our background. Fredrik Jameson once wrote that The Godfather had recreated the missing story for modern America. None of the films, in which the Russian mafia appears, participate in this process. they are always some aliens who live in Brooklyn, drink vodka and are nostalgic about the USSR with an accent. Think for yourself, after at least 40 years they remember how they sat in the Gulag. this is a rather long memory. That is, there is no history in this world, everything happens at the same time. Ivan the Terrible, Catherine the Great, Stalin, GULAG, Putin. everything is compressed.
Alexander Genis: But under all regimes, only one thing remains a constant element. vodka. It pisses me off terribly, because no matter how they show the Russians, they start drinking vodka at 8 in the morning and eat it with caviar, red, black or squash. But even Russians do not always have breakfast with vodka and caviar at 8 in the morning.
To be honest, I hate ordinary Western films about Russia, because I feel in the shade of spreading cranberries. Everything is the same as in Ilf and Petrov, who said that the main character in Hollywood when it comes to Russians is Princess Grishka. This princess Grishka is still triumphant on the screen, and all this is always filled with vodka. Who would have told them that in Russia, for example, they fell in love with whiskey for a long time, not everyone necessarily drinks vodka, and most importantly, they do not always drink it.
But one way or another, the images of Russians are increasingly appearing on screens. If only because the Russians have become a noticeable sign of Western life, of course. The main event for Russians on the screen in recent years has been television series. I want to talk about this in more detail.
Mark Lipovetsky: What you said about vodka at 8 am is amazingly illustrated by one of the latest hits, the Queen’s Gambit TV series, where, as many remember, the heroine turns out, as you might guess, either from the late 60s or from the beginning 70-ies and lives, apparently, in the “National”. In the morning, having breakfast in a restaurant, she sees a boy, a child of 10-11 years walking in the aisle between the tables, and delivers vodka in some kind of can or cauldron, which she pours with a large scoop. In the morning, at 8, a ladle of vodka, child! This is so stunningly funny that, I think, it spits Princess Grishka.
Alexander Genis: But you know, it reminded me of the fact that 600 types of vodkas are sold in Russia, of which 200 are called “ladies'”, there is, for example, “Mother-in-law’s vodka”, there is “Maiden’s vodka” and so on. So maybe there is also “children’s vodka”, I don’t know.
In Gambit, it’s really funny. But when we watch films about Russians, they always amuse us, because we see cranberries. But if the Chinese watch films where there are Chinese, they are probably also outraged and amused by them. Just as we, for example, are amused by the images of Americans in Russian cinema. These are probably inevitable mistakes that we shouldn’t take too seriously. Because the last series you mentioned represent a serious attempt to understand the Russians. First of all, this is “Chernobyl”, which, as I found out, is the most popular TV series in general, that is, number one now, if you look at the rating. He gained immense popularity. Why?
Mark Lipovetsky: Firstly, it strikes with a minimal amount of cranberries. Secondly, it seems to me that for the first time on such a scale an attempt was made in it to abandon the view of Russians, in this case the Soviets, as “others”, and to see in Russians the same people as Westerners, just their circumstances are exceptionally different. Chernobyl is interesting in that it shows how the system causes a catastrophe, how people within the system try to resist it in different ways, to fight it. And all this is not with a saber bald, not with a Jamesbond scale, but at the level of a complex hardware game. For me, for example, it became a great revelation (which, of course, testifies to my ignorance) of the figures of the two main characters: Valery Legasov and Boris Shcherbina, as it turned out, they really existed, who are simply amazingly played by famous actors Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard. Each of them creates a deep, psychologically complex character that does not fit in any way with the image of the party fanatic or the mad scientist that one would expect according to the stereotype. No, they are multifaceted, exhausted, crushed by the system and powerlessness before the catastrophe, but very charming, very interesting figures. Thanks to them, the whole picture becomes completely different.
Alexander Genis: You know, we talked about this film with my colleague and friend Andrey Zagdansky, who lived in Kiev during the Chernobyl disaster, saw and found a lot. He spoke about the reliability of this series, which, as we found out, is very rare when Russians are shown on the screen.
But I have one consideration. Tell me, if everything is the same, everything that was in the film took place not in Russia, but in America, could there be such a series? For some reason, it seems to me that he could easily exist in the American scenery: a disaster at a nuclear power plant, some officials hide the truth, others reveal it.
Mark Lipovetsky: No, it seems to me that no. For me, there was a very important moment in the first episode, when the leadership gathers and all the bosses are afraid to report this accident upstairs, they keep silent about this accident precisely because of their fear of the party leadership. This is a very Soviet moment. Very characteristic of “stagnation” (although, of course, everything is already happening under Gorbachev). Better to pretend nothing happened. I was living in Sverdlovsk when there was a fire there in the laboratory where they made bacteriological weapons in the 79th year, and the city would have been infected with anthrax. Everyone whispered, but nothing officially happened. Similarly, Chernobyl should not have happened. This presence of the Soviet political machine, which causes dumbness, which engenders fear of violating splendor, the fear of communicating bad news “upstairs”, plays a very important role here. In America or Europe, everything else, of course, could be the same. But this is too much of a difference to have an impact on the entire series. Plus, of course, not only carefully reproduced Soviet scenery, it is also everyday horror, shown without pathos. A very subtle and piercing intonation is found here.
Alexander Genis: How do you think Americans watch such a movie? How much do they understand what is clear to you??
Mark Lipovetsky: You see, I talk with students, whom we are preparing to perceive it as we perceive it ourselves. If you set some kind of coordinate system, then many things are perceived differently. You know, I, specially preparing for our conversation, looked who made this series “Chernobyl”, its creator, scriptwriter, director, producer Craig Mazin. He is from a Russian-Jewish family, his parents were immigrants in the first generation. That is, it would seem that he has some kind of connection with intimate memories of the USSR, for him, perhaps, this is not entirely exotic material. But on the other hand, take the famous series “The Americans” about Soviet spies. There, one of the authors was generally a CIA analyst, that is, it would seem, he knows the Soviet Union, Russia of that period is not bad at all. In addition, many Russian actors were filmed there, including such stars of the first magnitude as Daria Ekamasova and Yuri Kolokolnikov. And all the same, the way the Soviet Union is shown there in the early 80s or late 70s is fantastic! My favorite detail: the heroine, who worked in the Soviet embassy, went to work with the Americans, she was arrested and put in prison, I believe, in the Lubyanka or somewhere else. And here is one of the last shots: she sits in solitary confinement, next to her sadly, indicating that she is crying, there is a roll of toilet paper. In 1979! In prison. Toilet paper. You laugh, but, apparently, only you and I remember that toilet paper was a luxury item, that they fought and fought for it. And here in the prison, it turns out, it is easily accessible.
The only thing I really hate about Hollywood is these Russian images. But you and I decided that the screen is being corrected before our eyes. The last TV series “Queen’s Gambit”, which is extremely popular both in America and in Russia, was not in vain nominated for the “Golden Globe”. His success is evidenced by the fact that a huge amount of chess began to be sold in America. This was only when Fischer became the world champion, who, in fact, was bred here, however, in a female form. I remember Fischer’s victories very well, because then I became interested in chess, I played every game of him. For us, Fischer was the banner of democracy and freedom, we all rooted for him. In “Queen’s Gambit” Russia is shown in a very interesting way. It is again a superpower, but a superpower in the field of chess. How do you like this image?
Mark Lipovetsky: This is also a continuation of stereotypes. You, at least, played Fischer’s games, but I didn’t advance further than a child’s mat. But for some reason, my American acquaintances, wishing to tell me something pleasant, always say: “You are probably very good at playing chess.” I usually answer that I play better at “Chapaev” than at chess. That is, this is also a stereotypical image of Russia as a chess power, where everyone plays chess, everyone watches this match as the most important event. It is grounded in the deeply fantastic storyline of the entire series. After all, we know that women were not allowed to participate in men’s tournaments, that there was no gender equality. That is, this utopian assumption is very important, it seems to me, revolutionary in its own way, it seems to justify all the other assumptions that follow from it.
Alexander Genis: The hyperbole of Russian chess looks a little idiotic. when amateurs sit at chess tables in the cold and every move is like news from the Moon. But in fact, one can find historical reality under this. During Stalin’s time, chess was the safest form of leisure. This has been going on since the 1930s, remember “Lapshin” by Herman. So chess hobbies have a long and rather scary history. But in this film the Russians are shown as gentlemen. In this respect, there is, I believe, a shift, there is some kind of territory in which Russians and non-Russians can make friends. In this case, this is the neutral territory of chess, where, again, as in James Bond, there is not a fight, but a duel, but a duel is communication.
Tell me, Mark, how can you break those stereotypes of Russians on the screen that we are talking about today? What can be done to change this situation?
Mark Lipovetsky: It is impossible to break this by a strong-willed order. This stereotype itself is the flip side of the mythology of American exceptionalism, the mythology of the notion that America, the American person, the American way of life is actually human, and everything else is somewhere on the approaches to it. As soon as this mythology loosens, so immediately the walls become permeable. And the world around us is generally more permeable than it was not even 30, but 10 years ago.
In cinema, however, there is still this comfortable area of myth, which is reproduced, because, of course, it finds consumers. The fact of the matter is that as soon as the cinema abandons the point of view of Russia (here you can substitute any other country) as “another”, something interesting immediately happens. Not always good. Let’s say we watched two TV series about Catherine the Great with the brilliant Helen Mirren and a much less brilliant actress in the movie “The Great”. There was an interesting installation. a failed, but still interesting attempt to look at this whole distant history not as exotic. But, alas, nothing happened: the exotic remained irresistible. And exotic is always the aesthetic shell of the “other”.
Alexander Genis: I will e thought. Russian culture has a resource to get in touch with Western mass culture, which is the subconscious of society. How can it be influenced by culture? It seems to me that this is possible. Look, the authors of “Gambit” have found an interesting move: chess is something neutral and something in which Russia is undoubtedly the main one. That is, we need to find areas where Russia is the first player. You and I know very well that Russia was a superpower in the field of science fiction. You can use such a powerful resource as the Strugatskys’ books. We love the whole X-file series, The X-Files so much. I would like to make a similar series based on the Strugatskys, with Russians, including scientists. There is everything you need to create a field of interpenetration. And such new “X-Files” in Russian material with the use of the Strugatskys, in my opinion, may well bring the two cultures closer together and serve as such a bridge, such, I would say, Esperanto mass culture, which makes it possible to understand both.
Mark Lipovetsky: I really like your idea about the Strugatskys. Indeed, the Strugatskys are a language that certainly has a Soviet origin, but it is clearly closer to a global language, especially today. In any case, rumors about the adaptation of “Roadside Picnic” in the form of a TV series have been circulating for quite some time.
Alexander Genis: Yes, I also heard about it. We’ll talk about the Strugatskys again, since we both love this topic.
Shazam analogs for a computer
If you need a utility that can detect audio content without downloading, but you don’t want to use the emulator, then you should pay attention to alternative services. There are a couple of dozen of them, but I will only tell you about the most effective.
