7 Ways to Turn Off Windows 10 Laptop Screen
For better or worse, we don’t live in 1999 and most monitors don’t have a screen off button. over, I’ve never seen a laptop with a separate button to turn off the screen.!
But don’t worry, there are many ways to turn off the screen on a Windows 10 computer or laptop. Here are 7 of the easiest and fastest methods.
If “Turn Off Monitor” for any reason does not work on your computer, try DisplayOff, which offers a similar functionality. turn off the screen. What’s more, both apps have a nearly identical user interface.
Monitor Energy Saver
Monitor Energy Saver is another program that, as the name suggests, offers more features than just turning off the Windows 10 screen. You can also Pause applications and update your chat status to “Away.”.
Turn Off Monitor App
Another application called Turn Off Monitor does one thing. turns off the screen. The app is portable, so you don’t need to install it on your computer.
Turn off the monitor from the keyboard
Sometimes it becomes necessary to turn off the monitor instead of turning off the computer. The reasons are different, for example, you turned on the music and you no longer need the monitor, or you need to move away from the computer for 15 minutes. The WIN L hotkey combination will lock your computer, but the display will remain on and turn off only after the time specified in the power saving settings.
The first thing that comes to mind is to press the power button on the monitor. This method is not always convenient, moreover, you will have to press it again to turn it back on. In addition, sometimes this method is NOT available at all, for example, the button does not work or you have a laptop. Laptops are a separate story, they have a Fn F key combination for this (F is different in different models), but in some laptops it is absent.
Therefore, it can be quite convenient to lock the computer and turn off the monitor in one step. Only, unfortunately, you will NOT be able to do this with standard Windows tools. You can only adjust the period of inactivity after which the monitor turns off, but you want to be able to turn off the display at any time. Therefore, you will have to use third-party programs.
We recommend using the tiny free utility Nircmd, not the one that requires installation. Just download and unpack the archive to any convenient location on your hard drive. There is a version for x-32 and x-64 versions of Windows. Now, to turn off the monitor, you can go Several ways, but the most convenient, so that in the future it is easy to extinguish the display is to create a special shortcut. Create a shortcut to the nircmd.exe file using one of the described methods and add the following parameters at the end: monitor off.
Now if you start it, the monitor will turn off, and if you move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard, it will turn on back. You can turn off the monitor without minimizing all open windows to get to the shortcut, just specify the desired key combination in the properties of the created shortcut.
Now, by pressing this key combination, the monitor will go into standby mode, which is actually required. It remains to bring a little polish. The default shortcut icon is pretty ugly, to fix this, go to the shortcut properties and click the “Change icon” button. We select the one you need from the proposed ones or assign any other present in the computer.
Lock your computer and turn off the monitor in one click
The question of how to simultaneously lock the computer and turn off the monitor in order to protect your computer from prying eyes remained unresolved. After all, if you first lock the computer, it will not turn off the software display, and if you first turn off the monitor, then pressing WIN L turn it back on. There are two ways out of this situation.
You can take advantage of the pre-set delay in performing the monitor shutdown. To do this, in the properties of the shortcut, you need to enter an additional parameter and the whole command will look something like this:
where 3000 is the delay in milliseconds. Now, if you just launch the shortcut, then after 3 seconds the monitor will turn off, and if you press the WIN L key on the keyboard during this period of time, the computer will also be locked. The delay can be chosen arbitrarily to your taste.
The second way involves creating a batch file. It will have only two lines of code, naturally each will have its own paths.
Now if you run this batch file or a shortcut to it, then in one action we immediately block the computer and turn off the display, and the delay will come in handy in order to have time to remove our hands from the mouse and keyboard.
Finally, we want to note that Nircmd is a multifunctional utility and can perform a large number of other actions. In case it just turns off the display you are bored, you can use the screensaver command. which run the regular screensaver. You can read about all its other features in the help file.
You need a touchscreen in Windows 10?
Comments, Windows 10 laptops and 2-in-1 devices do NOT technically need a touchscreen. This means that you may run into situations where you find that the touchscreen is disabled. Disabling the touchscreen can prevent inadvertent data entry, such as tapping on items you did NOT want to tap, which is why some people prefer to do without this feature.
The main reason for enabling the touchscreen on a Windows 10 device is that it can make it easier to perform some tasks as touching the screen usually takes less time than moving the mouse and clicking with a small trackpad.
In some cases, a touchscreen and a compatible pen device may allow you to use a Windows 10 laptop, 2-in-1, or tablet in the same way you use a drawing tablet such as the Cintiq. If you’re into graphic design, this is a great way to get some extra features on your Windows 10 touchscreen device.
What to do if you DO NOT see a HID-compliant touchscreen?
If you DO NOT see an entry for HID Compliant Touchscreen in Device Manager, there are two possible reasons. First, Windows Media is not aware that you have a touchscreen that can be fixed by scanning for hardware changes. Second, you have a touch screen.
If your touchscreen has never worked and you DO NOT see a list of HID-compliant touchscreens, contact your device manufacturer. Give them your product number and they can tell you if your device should have a touchscreen. Many laptop lines include similar versions with and without touchscreens.
If you’re sure your device should have a touchscreen, here’s how to get Windows to check it:
If you DO NOT have Device Manager open yet, click on the search box on the taskbar, type Device Manager and click Device Manager to open it again.
Click on the arrow next to Human Interface Devices. to expand the list, and Make sure you DO NOT see the HID-compliant touchscreen.
Click Scan for hardware changes.
Check the list of Human Interface Devices. to see if there is a HID-compliant touchscreen.
If the Windows Setup Wizard detects your touchscreen, check if it works. If not, skip to the next section to check for driver updates.
If It doesn’t find your touchscreen, you may have a hardware problem or your device may not have a touchscreen at all.

How to update your touchscreen driver
In some cases, you may have a touch screen that does not work even after you turn it on. If you see a list of HID compliant touchscreens in Device Manager and your touchscreen still doesn’t work after turning it on, you might have a driver or hardware issue.
In situations where the touchscreen is not working due to a driver issue, you can fix it by updating the driver, running Windows Update, or contacting your computer manufacturer for any Special instructions or update tools.
Here’s how to update your touchscreen driver:
If you DO NOT have Device Manager open yet, click on the search box on the taskbar, type Device Manager and click Device Manager to open it again.

How to turn off the lock screen in Windows 10
This instruction contains ways to completely disable the lock screen in Windows 10, taking into account the fact that the previously present option to do this in the local group policy editor does not work in the professional version of 10, starting with version 1607 (and was absent in the home version). This was done, I believe, for the same purpose as disabling the ability to change the option “Windows 10 consumer experience”, namely in order to show us advertisements and Suggested applications. Update 2017: in version 1703 Creators Update there is an option in gpedit.
Do not confuse the login screen (where we enter the password to disable it, see How to disable the password when logging into Windows 10 and exiting sleep) and the lock screen, which shows cute wallpapers, time and notifications, but can also show ads (just for Russia, apparently, there are no advertisers yet). Further, we are talking about disabling the lock screen (which can be called by pressing the WinL keys, where Win is the key with the Windows logo).
Note: if you don’t want to do everything manually, you can turn off the lock screen using the free Winaero Tweaker program (the parameter is located in the Boot and Logon section of the program).
Another Way to Disable Windows 10 Lock Screen Using Registry Editor
One way to disable the lock screen in Windows 10 is to change the value of the AllowLockScreen parameter to 0 (zero) in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Authentication \ LogonUI \ SessionData key in the Windows 10 registry.
However, if you do it manually, each time you log in, the setting automatically changes to 1 and the lock screen turns on again.
There is a way to get around this as follows
- Run the task scheduler (Use the search in the taskbar) and click the “Create task” case, give it any name, for example, “Disable the lock screen”, check the “Run with the highest rights” item in the “Configure for” specify Windows 10.
- In the “triggers” tab, create two triggers. when any user logs on and when any user unlocks the workstation.
- On the “Actions” tab, create an action “Run the program”, in the “Program or script” field, enter reg and in the “Add arguments” field, copy the following term
After that press OK to save the created task. Done, now the lock screen will appear Will not, you can check this by pressing the WinL keys and immediately go to the Windows 10 login password screen.
Basic ways to turn off Windows 10 lock screen
The two main ways to disable the lock screen include using the Local Group Policy Editor (in case you have Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise) or Registry Editor (for Windows 10 Home, works for Pro as well), the methods are suitable for Creators Update.
The method with the Local Group Policy Editor looks like this:
- Press the WinR keys, type gpedit.msc into the Run window and press Enter.
- In the local group policy editor that opens, go to the section “Computer Configuration”. “Administrative Templates”. “Control Panel”. “Personalization”.
- On the right side, find the item “Prohibit the display of the lock screen”, double-click on it and set “Enabled” to disable the lock screen (just like this. “Enabled” to disable).
Apply the settings made and restart the computer. Now the lock screen will not be displayed, you will immediately see the login screen. When you press the WinL keys or when you select “Lock” in the “Start” menu, the lock screen will also NOT turn on, but the login window will open.
If Local Group Policy Editor is not available in your version of Windows 10, use the following method:
- Press WinR keys, type regedit and press Enter. the Registry Editor will open.
- In the registry editor, go to the HLEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Personalization subkey (if there is no Personalization subkey, create it by right-clicking on the Windows subkey and selecting the Corresponding context menu item).
- On the right side of Registry Editor, right-click and select New. DWORD Value (including for 64-bit) and set the name to NoLockScreen.
- Double click on the NoLockScreen option and set it to 1.
When finished, restart your computer. the lock screen will be disabled.
If you wish, you can also turn off the background image on the login screen: to do this, go to the settings. personalization (or right-click on the desktop. personalization) and in the “Lock screen” section Turn off the item “Show the background image of the lock screen on the login screen “.
How to remove lock screen (LockApp.exe) in Windows 10
And one more, simpler, but probably less correct way. The lock screen is an application located in the C: \ Windows \ SystemApps Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy folder. And it is quite possible to remove it (but take your time), and Windows 10 does not show any worries about the lack of a lock screen, but simply does not show it.
Instead of deleting it just in case (so that you can easily return everything to its original form), I recommend doing the following: just rename the Microsoft.LockApp_cw5n1h2txyewy folder (you need administrator rights), added a symbol to its name (see, For example, I have in the screenshot).
This is enough so that the lock screen will NOT be displayed anymore.
At the end of the article, I note that I am personally somewhat surprised by how freely they began to slip ads in the start menu after the last big update of Windows 10 (although I noticed this only on a computer where a clean installation of version 1607 was performed): immediately after installation, I found neither one or not two “suggested applications”: all kinds of Asphalt and I don’t remember what else, and new items appeared over time (it may come in handy: how to remove the Suggested applications from the Windows 10 Start menu). We are promised the same on the lock screen.
It seems strange to me: Windows is the only popular “consumer” operating system that is paid. And she is the only one that allows herself to do such tricks and disables the ability of users to completely get rid of them. And it doesn’t matter that now we received it as a free update. anyway, in the future, its cost will be included in the cost of a new computer, and someone will need the Retail version for more than 100 and paid it, the user will still be forced to put up with this “features”.
Windows 10: Turn off the screen in lock mode | IT Notes on WordPress.com
The new Windows 10 OS seems to have been released with a lot of flaws (small and not so). Some of them do not directly affect the functionality of the OS, but they cause some discomfort.
One of these shortcomings is the absence in the OS settings, by default, of the ability to adjust the waiting time when the screen is turned off in the computer lock mode. The user locks the computer and after half a minute or a minute, the monitor screen turns off.
A solution to this problem was found on the Microsoft support forums. The procedure is as follows:
- Start the registry editor (regedit.exe) and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Power \ PowerSettings \ 7516b95f-f776-4464-8c53-06167f40cc99 \ 8EC4B3A5-6868-48c2-BE75-4F3044BE88A7.
- Set Attributes to 2 (dword: 00000002) and close Registry Editor.
- Open advanced power options (Control Panel \ Hardware and Sound \ Power Options \ Change Schematic Settings \ Change Advanced Power Settings). In the window that opens, in the “Screen” branch, a new item “Waiting time until the console lock screen turns off” will appear. Its default value will be “1 minute”. Set the waiting time interval you need and click “OK”.
Additional power options
All. Now the monitor screen in lock mode will go out after a user-set time.
By the way, this method also works for Windows 8.1, which has the same problem.

So, many users are faced with certain inconveniences associated with Windows energy saving settings, such as NOT acceptable or simply not convenient time to turn off the display off or even go to sleep.
Someone would like the computer to turn off the display and fall asleep before it is configured by default, but someone does not like that the display goes out or the computer goes into sleep mode too quickly. And someone just would like to adjust the brightness of the laptop or computer display.
Setting up all this is quite simple, because after reading this manual, you will never again have any difficulties with this kind of settings.
- The first thing we need to do is just right-click on any empty spot on the desktop. The context menu list appears:
- We select the item “personalization”. The following window appears:
- Left-click on the word “splash screen” in the lower right corner. We see the following:
- left-click on the inscription “change power supply parameters”. A new window appears:
- now you need to click on the inscription “setting the power plan” in that line, the beginning of which is marked with a tick (black circles, indicated by an arrow in the screenshot). A window appears directly for the settings of the energy management system:
- In this window, by pressing the small arrows opposite the values, select the desired time for dimming the display, turning it off and leaving the PC in sleep mode. Set by ourselves when the display will go out or darken, choose the time when the monitor will turn off and go out, determine the time after which the computer can go into sleep mode. Here you can adjust the brightness of your laptop display by dragging the slider located opposite the inscription “adjust the brightness of the plan”.

How to customize Windows 10 screen timeout
In Windows 10, the waiting period before the monitor turns off to save power is typically 10 minutes. In addition, when the monitor is turned off, the computer is locked. Further work is possible only after entering the password for the used username. And if on PCs used as workplaces in large companies and in production this is forced by the mayor, caused by security requirements, then on ordinary home computers there is no need for this. over, this mechanism becomes very inconvenient: I went to the kitchen for coffee and the operating system was locked. - Windows 7: Start-Control Panel-Hardware and Sound-Mouse
In version 7, oddly enough, the sensor control is located in the mouse control tab. But it is in it that it is much easier to turn on or off the touch screen than in newer versions of the operating system.
Disconnect via device manager
Through the device manager, you can manage any programs on your computer. But in order not to accidentally turn off something important, you need to have the proper level of PC use. For beginners, this method is better not to apply.
The device manager is invoked using the WinR or WinPause keyboard shortcut. In the first case, enter the devmgmt.mc command in the Run field. In the second case, you will need to select “Device Manager” in the “System” item.
Further in the device manager you need to find the “Mice and other devices” tab. Opening it, the bottom will be a device with the letters HID. This device must be turned off. If there are several such devices, then you need to turn off everything. This device is the laptop’s touch screen.

You can turn the touchscreen back on by Performing all the above manipulations and turn the devices back on.
Disconnect via Bios
In Bios, it is possible to disable any hardware device connected to the laptop. Including the display. An important point is that for inexperienced users it is better not to use Bios for configuration, because an incorrect request can damage information on a laptop or completely delete the operating system.
But if the user is confident in their capabilities, then you can proceed to disabling the touch screen. First you need to get into the Bios itself. On many laptops, this can be done by holding down the F1 or F2 key while turning it on. It can also be another F key on the keyboard. Everything depends on the model. On Lenovo laptops, a special key is provided for this at all, located in the charging slot.
After logging in, you need to move to the “Advanced” tab. In it, select the “System Properties” tab, and then “Mouse / Keyboard features” and then go to the “Internal Poiting Device” tab. There will be an item “Disable”, which you need to select and activate with the Enter key. That’s it, the touch screen will be disabled, and now you can leave Bios, having previously saved all the settings. This can be done using the Esc key and following the prompts on the laptop screen.

Disconnect via task manager
An equally simple way to manage the state of the touchscreen is to use the task manager.
First you need to call the task manager. On all versions of the Windows operating system, this can be done with the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keyboard shortcut. After simultaneously holding down this key combination, a task window will pop up on the screen. In it you need to find a program that is responsible for controlling the screen sensor. Depending on the laptop model. The program can be called differently. Most often it is all the same Synaptics.
Disconnect via task manager
As soon as the program is found in the manager, you need to name it with the left mouse button, and click on the “complete the process” button. The performed operation will completely disable the touch screen by the next reboot of the laptop.
An easy and affordable way to disable is to use a key or a combination of them on the keyboard. Typically, the laptop manufacturer marks these keys with special identification icons, and places them at the top of the keyboard.
An example of a touch screen off button on a laptop
One press of a button is enough to disable the touch screen. But this only works on licensed devices.
Disable keyboard shortcut
As a rule, this is the Fn key and one of the F keys. To find it clearly, you will have to study the instructions for the laptop or find a special icon on one of the buttons. Possible options: F1, F2, F3, F5.
Location of F keys
No buttons have a dedicated icon? Then it is worth checking the combination of the Ctrl and Shift keys with other keys on the computer. Sometimes the manufacturer uses numeric keyboard elements in combination.
Disable the touchscreen on a laptop in different ways
In the high-tech age, you will NOT surprise anyone with a touchscreen laptop. Almost everyone can buy a similar device for their office or home.
Often a touchscreen is not needed at all. Therefore, it becomes necessary to disable it. And, oddly enough, not everyone knows how to properly disable the touchscreen on a laptop. In practice, this turns out to be NOT more difficult than, for example, unlocking a smartphone.
Disconnection using third-party programs
On laptops with unlicensed software, all of the above methods simply may NOT work. This is where third-party programs come to the rescue.
The best of them are available only for paid access. But there is a very good and at the same time free utility called TouchPad Blocker. The program is made in English, but at the same time anyone can understand it.
It has many useful features. For example, periodically turning on / off the touchscreen for a specified time limit, soundtrack for pressing the touchscreen and much more. The utility will be very useful for those who want to fully control the touch screen from one program.
Even if the user can not accidentally enable / disable what he needs, the usual removal of the program from the computer will help. After this process, the touchscreen will continue to work as usual.
As you can see, turning the touchscreen on or off on a laptop is not difficult at all. If one method does not help, then you can always use the second, more suitable for a particular situation. The main thing is to clearly follow the instructions outlined above.
Turning on the laptop for the first time
Before using the laptop, you must first connect the power supply (adapter) to the corresponding connector in the laptop case. Have you connected? Now plug this power supply into an outlet. Both adapter and laptop LEDs should light up. So, everything was done correctly. Hooray!
Boldly opening the laptop lid. By the way, when opening, hold the laptop lid in the middle, or both corners at once. Otherwise, for example, when opening at one corner, the lid hinges may loosen over time, and this will NOT lead to anything good. This must be done with both hands. Hold the top cover in the middle with one hand and the bottom cover with the other. So you will reduce the load on the LCD matrix, which will greatly extend the shelf life of the loop cable. It is also advisable to place the laptop on a hard and flat surface, so that the air flow will constantly flow to the ventilation grill
You can work on a laptop without a mouse, using a touchpad (touchpad). But, believe my experience, it is still much more convenient to use a mouse that needs to be connected to any USB port.
Find the power button, it is located just below the screen. As a rule, this is the central button, to the left and right of it there may be buttons for turning on the touchpad and Wi-Fi.
Press the power button. The second (blue) indicator light will light up, the power button itself will light up.
If you did everything correctly, the process of loading the operating system will begin: first, an image and an inscription will appear on the monitor screen, informing that Windows is starting. Then a bunch of different letters and numbers will flash before your eyes; then a “Welcome” window will open and at the end of this performance, a window with a desktop will open in front of you with musical accompaniment.
During the first boot, several windows may appear, in which you will need to enter some information. For example, the name under which you will work on the laptop, the preferred language (select Russian), time zone, etc.
To check Swipe your finger across the touchpad, the cursor should move. If It does not respond, the touchpad is disabled. To turn it on, press the button next to the power button, a hand can be drawn on or next to the touchpad. In the off position, the touchpad button can be illuminated with an orange indicator. After entering all the data, the system will save them, you will see the Windows 7 desktop.
Laptop ready to go.
How to properly shut down your laptop
There are several ways to shut down your laptop.
- Traditional shutdown. Start. Completion of work. In Windows XP, the operating system specifies what action needs to be performed, and only after a second confirmation will turn off the laptop. In Windows 7, the PC will shut down without further questions. In this case, all open applications will be automatically terminated, the data will be saved. The shutdown itself will take about a minute, restarting it will take a few minutes, which will be needed to boot the operating system, check executable files with antivirus, etc.
- Power off using the Power indicator button, which is usually located under the monitor. This button, if configured to shutdown, allows one short press to correctly turn off the laptop while maintaining all the parameters of the previous session.
- Closing the laptop lid. With certain settings, closing the lid puts the PC into sleep mode. In this case, the work of the programs may not be completed. After switching on (short press on the Power indicator button), the work of all unfinished programs will continue, with the exception, perhaps, of a network connection. When powered from the mains, the laptop can be in sleep mode for a long time, and if you constantly use it, then sleep mode will allow you NOT to turn off the computer at all. If the battery runs out during sleep mode, the laptop will quit all applications and turn off automatically.
- Shutdown using the CtrlAltDel key combination. The method is indispensable in cases when the laptop does not respond to user commands, that is, “freezes”. A single press of this combination brings up the Task Manager, a second press leads to a restart.
- Forced disconnection of the laptop. This method cannot be considered correct, you have to use it when the laptop completely freezes, the keyboard is blocked and does NOT respond to any user commands. Power off the laptop by long pressing the Power indicator button. In the worst case, you will have to disconnect the laptop from the network and remove the battery for a few seconds.
