  • BWB, also known as BtB, is an abbreviation of the English word combination “Black to Back” and “Black-White-Black”. Shows the time it takes for a pixel to switch from black to white and back to black. The most honest indicator.
  • BtW. stands for “Black to White”. Switching on from inactive state to 100% luminosity.
  • GTG is short for “Gray to Gray”. How many points does it take to change the gray brightness from ninety percent to ten. Usually in the order of 1-2 ms.

And it turns out that checking the response time of the monitor using the third method will show a much better and attractive result for the consumer than checking the second. But you won’t find fault. they will write that 2 ms and so it will be. Yes, only in fact on the monitor and artifacts climb, and the picture goes like a train. And all from the fact that the true state of affairs is shown only by the BWB method. the first method, it is he who testifies to the time required for a pixel for a full working cycle in all possible states.

Unfortunately, the documentation available to consumers does not clarify the picture and what is meant by, for example, 8 ms concepts is difficult. Will it fit, will it work comfortably?

For laboratory research, a rather complex hardware and software complex is used, which is NOT in every workshop. But what if you want to check the manufacturer?

Checking the response time of the monitor at home is carried out by the TFT Monitor Test program. Selecting the test icon in the softina menu and indicating the native screen resolution, a picture with a rectangle scurrying back and forth is displayed on the display. In this case, the programmlin will proudly show the measured time!

We used version 1.52, checked several displays and concluded that the program is showing something, and even in milliseconds. over, the monitor of the worst quality showed the worst results. But since the time of extinction and ignition of pixels is recorded only by a photosensor, which did not exist, a purely software method can be recommended for a subjective comparative assessment. what the program measures is understandable only to its developers.

A much more visual empirical test will be the “White square” mode in the TFT Monitor Test. a white square moves across the screen, and the task of the tester is to observe the train from this geometric figure. The longer the loop, the more time it takes to switch the matrix and the worse its properties.

That is all that can be done to solve the problem “How to check the response time of the monitor.” We will not describe the methods using cameras and calibration tables, but we will consider them another time. it will take another couple of days. A full check can only be performed by a specialized organization with an appropriate technical base.

It is translated into the usual hertz by the formula f = 1 / t. That is, in order to get the desired 25 Hz, it is required to provide the pixels with a speed of 40 ms and 33 ms for 30 Hz.

Buying a card with a thousand or one and a half conventional units in order to drive your favorite games at at least a hundred FPS, and give a signal to the monitor, which barely pulls forty FPS, is a little irrational. Better to put a hundred on the display and enjoy the full dynamics of games and movies without disappointment. you definitely won’t get 40 ms of the pleasure matrix, and the joy of owning a powerful adapter will cover the poor image quality.

What does this mean in practical terms

The longer the response time, the longer the monitor will respond to an already changed picture. This is completely unimportant, for example, when working with a text document or a spreadsheet: most users do not print so much faster to notice that the monitor is “dull”.

The parameter is almost not taken into account when working with graphics and processing: here it is already more important that the monitor displays the full palette of colors and distorts them as little as possible.

However, response time is very important for games, as well as when watching blockbusters with chases and gunfights, where scenes change each other at breakneck speed.

I want to note that in the case of games, there is NO speech in shooters and other dynamic fun. even a primitive casual game from the category of “three in a row” suggests that the picture, albeit in some areas of the monitor, will constantly change, and quite quickly.

Throw in all sorts of effects and animations that the developers add and you get the big picture. Why animation? With such competition in a niche, almost no one will play a game where three blocks of the same color simply disappear, I guarantee.
