Gamma curves and gray balance
Using the HCFR Colormeter software and the “calibrated” X-Rite Display Pro colorimeter, I studied the gamma curves in all the modes discussed above. In addition, according to the measurements, it is possible to estimate the discrepancy of the gray wedge (points of the black-and-white gradient) on the CIE diagram and draw conclusions about the predominance of one or another parasitic shade, or its absence.
The first in line are the Standard and Eco modes, which differ exclusively in the factory brightness settings. In each of them, the contrast is noticeably reduced by raising the brightness of the middle and dark areas of the image, the RGB balance is disturbed and a hump is revealed in the area with highlights, which can negatively affect the distinguishability of light shades of gray.
When the MRT black frame insertion mode is activated, there are no significant changes in the picture. Visual brightness only drops sharply and gray balance improves slightly.
In Game mode, we did not find any hints of additional advantages for the players. the deviations in color rendition in it are the highest of all modes, and there are no obvious changes against the background of Standard mode. The Movie preset can offer you no gamma hump in highlights and cool grayscale with good balance. This is contrasted with Low Blue Light with warm hues and not such a perfect balance. The last of the pre-installed ones is RTS, but, to be honest, there is nothing to say about it. Xiaomi, why is it needed?!
As a result, if you want to get the best picture from the monitor (within the capabilities of its matrix), then you cannot do without manual adjustment and calibration. True, the Xiaomi Mi Surface Display 34 matrix does not have great color stability, and therefore the final results may differ over time. So in the case above. this is the result a couple of hours after calibration.
The results float over time, and therefore the gamma curves are not perfect (but better than before, with the right contrast and no RGB imbalance) and only the gray balance on the CIE chart is difficult to find fault with. Otherwise, for working with color, it is important to use the created color profile in software with its support.
Additional features and settings
The new Xiaomi product does not have any built-in sensors (illumination, proximity), but the menu has several additional parameters that directly affect the color accuracy and picture quality in general. Let’s check how two of them affect the images: Gamma and Black Level.
Of the additional gamma modes in Display 34, there are options 1.8, 2.0, 2.4 and 2.6. The installation accuracy of each of them is not very high, almost each of them has its own oddities. However, this is one of the easiest ways to quickly affect the contrast of a picture. The majority of users will be completely satisfied with the default value of 2.2, as the most optimal and closest to the reference environment presented by Xiaomi.
The Black Level parameter, as its name implies, adjusts the visibility of dark areas and does this in the case of the Display 34 quite gently, however, it affects this adjustment and the middle region of the gamma curves.
As a result, if you need more distinguishable shadows, then you should definitely not go above 70%. If you want to make the picture more expressive and more correct, then in addition to adjusting the brightness and RGB, you can set the Black Level to 30 or 40%. Going below these numbers is such a thing
Brightness, contrast and key color indices
There are seven main Smart Mode pre-installed in Xiaomi Display 34. The default setting uses Standard mode with the following settings:
- Brightness. 80;
- Contrast. 75
- Color Temp Standard;
- Gamma 2.2;
- Dynamic Brightness. Off;
- Black Level. 50;
- Response Time. Off;
- Noise Reduction. Off;
In the future, the following settings were used to obtain a brightness of 100 nits, a color temperature of a white point of 6500K and other improvements:
- Brightness. 11;
- Contrast. 75
- Color Temp Custom (45 | 46 | 45);
- Gamma 2.2;
- Dynamic Brightness. Off;
- Black Level. 50;
- Response Time. Medium;
- Noise Reduction. Off;
The main changes were made by lowering the brightness of the backlight and adjusting the RGB Gain. The monitor does not need to adjust the contrast level or change the gamma mode. Make it worse!
Now let’s look at all the received data, presented in the table below:
I must say right away that it makes no sense to talk about the tested modes for a long time, because the difference between them is not very big. First of all, the brightness differs, but in anything other than MRT, you can adjust it to your liking. The contrast ratio almost everywhere (Movie mode is an exception) exceeds the manufacturer’s stated, which means there are no problems with deep blacks.
The default white point is set at a level close to cold 8000K, which is repeated by most of the tested modes. Even colder is only Movie, where it can be taken as a certain norm (although not all manufacturers think so), but for a warm “atmosphere” you should go to Low Blue Light, in which the overall contrast of the picture is also slightly reduced (but by the contrast ratio it does not affect in any way).
In terms of overall color accuracy, which we can estimate from the detected DeltaE deviations, none of the modes can offer you anything worthwhile. The problem, however, lies more in the non-standard color gamut of the matrix than in the gamma settings. However, without gamma edits, too, nowhere, and the CG of the white point must be edited, after which a full-fledged profiling of the device should be performed, and only after that the Xiaomi display can get excellent results presented in the table above.
We are all accustomed to the fact that if you want a high-quality monitor, you need to look at models from A-brands, having previously read reviews of the most relevant and outstanding of them. Others, in an attempt to save money, look at the solutions of the so-called B-brands, the list of which we, perhaps, will not announce. We can do without heated discussions and grievances from fans, and just people who use their products every day.
Time passed, the author of this text managed to work closely with about ten popular at that time “Koreans”, but at some point the began to rise, their popularity fell, and a huge number of people were left with problem copies, which gradually failed. or other elements. Honestly, many solutions did not please with their quality even at the first meeting, but many were able to save significantly by purchasing a monitor in terms of technical characteristics at the level of expensive Apple Cinema Displays, which were equal to the above newcomers to the market.
Xiaomi decided to test its strength in a new market for itself with the help of literally three display models: two from the top Mi series and one more affordable Redmi, which, however, turned out to be in Russia no cheaper than its premium brother.
The monitor has an unknown VA panel with a slightly wider color gamut. Let’s look at its capabilities using Display 34 as an example:
The initial check was carried out with the factory settings of the display. The screenshots show that the monitor surpasses sRGB in its capabilities in green, light green, red and yellow shades, but loses slightly to it in blue and violet stimuli.
After activating the MRT mode, there are no significant changes, but manual adjustment with further calibration helps to score slightly in the reproduction of blue shades.
Now let’s look at the obtained match numbers and the total amount of color data in different modes:

All values were obtained by profiling in the Argyll CMS environment, with clipping of colors and shades that go beyond the reference values. Based on the results obtained, it should be noted that the studied novelty is quite suitable for working with color, but only after creating an individual profile for the system to understand which monitor it is dealing with. You should also remember about some of the features of most VA panels, which can put a bold cross on the performance of a particular task where high color accuracy is required and, in particular, the reproduction of dark halftones.
Speaking of shades that exceed the standards under study, it can be noted that it is possible to combat them by the method you all know. using ICC / ICM profiles and software with normal color management system (CMS) support. Among those: Adobe products, Google Picasa, XnView, Windows Photo Viewer (7, 8, 10), Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.
Menu and control
The studied monitor uses a control system based on five physical keys. The monitor power control is slightly larger than the others and is located at a greater distance from them.
The power indicator is located on the front panel and glows white when the screen is in operation. There is no possibility to deactivate it.
Controlling the monitor is not very convenient. you have to get used to it. The now popular 5-way joystick would quickly solve this problem, but it’s not here. She’s so saving
When you press any of the four control buttons, the main menu appears on the screen on the right side of which on-screen tips are located. Monitor quick access functions are not provided.
The visual range of the OSD menu is quite simple and only slightly “smacks of Chinese”, especially recalling the handicrafts from “Korean monitors”.
There are six sections in the menu. In the first. called Bri / Con. the user is asked to set the backlight brightness, contrast, activate dynamic brightness (better forget about it), adjust the visibility of deep shadows (BlackLevel) and activate dynamic contrast (not much different from dynamic brightness).
The second Picture section provides the ability to adjust color temperature (three preset modes and manual adjustment), overall hue and saturation (no separate color channels). There are five gamma options, as well as various options for the built-in image scaler.
In PQ Settings (most likely, this is Picture Quality), the user can adjust the sharpness of the picture, the degree of overclocking Overdrive, noise reduction (we still did not understand how and where this function works), as well as activate the “black frame” insertion mode.
All available preset modes are defined in the fourth section of SmartMode. There are six available options, and the Standard preset is selected by default. the most adequate of all.
To work with PiP | PbP functions, the Window Settings section is highlighted. Let’s remind that simultaneous work with only two connected sources is possible. Here you can also select a signal source when working with one PC. Otherwise, you will not find any special settings here. everything is as simple as possible.
You will have to get acquainted with the last section of the menu in the very first minutes of working at the monitor, since the default language is Chinese. To install English (and there are no other digestible options), you need to get to the first item in the Settings section and select the required option. From other functions, the manufacturer offers to select an audio signal source, set the volume, activate FreeSync (and, accordingly, the ability to activate G-Sync in Compatible mode), see the available minimum of working information and reset all settings to default values.
Access to the service menu was not found. The monitor turned on with almost any key combination, but there was no effect from this.
Speaking about the matrix used, many argue that the monitor uses an SVA panel from Samsung. It is quite possible that this is the case. However, there is no exact confirmation of this, and the Internet still does not know about the existence of a 34-inch SVA with a resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels, a scanning frequency of 144 Hz and a radius of curvature of 1500R (1500 mm). Thus, we can only talk about some kind of VA matrix with the characteristics specified by the manufacturer and a slightly expanded color gamut (revealed during testing), which was most likely achieved using the so-called PSF Phosphor W-LED backlight ( but it is not exactly).
The backlight itself dispenses with flicker (Flicker-Free), supports MRT mode for inserting a “black frame” and a corresponding increase in the clarity of moving objects on the screen, and is also able to reduce its blue component of the spectrum when switching to the Low Blue Light preset. The manufacturer says that it can reproduce 16.7 million colors, which hints to us that the panel is 8-bit. Whether dithering technology is used to expand the color depth is a million question, but more likely. yes, because to increase the speed. this is one of the most popular tricks
In terms of maximum brightness, contrast ratio and viewing angles, the monitor matches the average level among large VA solutions. The response time of 4 ms with the declared 144 Hz is not a satisfactory figure, and does not give much hope for the super-outstanding speed capabilities of the display. In turn, this does not negate the presence of support for the AMD Free-Sync adaptive synchronization system and the unofficial support for G-Sync in Compatible mode in the real range of 40-144 Hz.
Among the main interfaces, the model can offer two HDMI 2.0 and two DP 1.4. To work with multiple sources, PIP | PbP functions are available, but you should take into account the presence of some restrictions (only two sources, reduced resolution when PbP is activated). Additionally, there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, but Mi Surface does not have a built-in speaker system and USB ports for working with peripherals.
The monitor uses a “bezel-less” panel, but the now-standard bottom bezel is still with us. The ergonomic stand offers three degrees of freedom, and the control system is based on five physical buttons.
Illumination and color temperature uniformity
The uniformity of the monitor backlight and color temperature across the screen field was checked at 35 points with the monitor brightness set to 100 nits. All calculations (deviations) were based on data from the central point.
With the brightness set, the average deviation from the center point was 8.7%, and the maximum deviation was 23%. The result for such a diagonal is quite good, and given the cost and other characteristics of the monitor, you can completely close the question under study.
From the surface diagram presented, you can clearly see how the brightness level is concentrated across the matrix field. Our specimen has the strongest darkening of the right and left edges of the panel, which is not at all surprising. True, the transition is quite sharp and sometimes it can be striking when working in front of the monitor.

The photo above shows a white field with minimal corrections in a graphics editor for a more visual representation of what is happening on the screen in terms of the uniformity of the bright field.
For better clarity, we will also demonstrate dark gray fills. Here you can see problems not only with brightness, but also small deviations in color temperature, which are more noticeable in dark shades of gray.
Now let’s consider a black background, evaluating its “uniformity” from two photographs taken at different distances from the screen (
70 cm and 150 cm), so that you can visually evaluate the influence of the already annoying Glow-effect and find out the real uniformity of illumination without taking it into account.
In the first case, Glow on a VA monitor appears as an uneven black field with a noticeable emphasis on the edges of the panel. The darkest black area is an oval in the center of the matrix, which moves across the field along with a change in the viewing angle.
With a strong distance from the screen, the Glow disappears completely, and we become witnesses to the uneven field of most modern VA matrices, which is already familiar to the author. We are faced with almost a dozen areas-spotlights of various degrees of visibility (mainly concentrated at the edges of the screen), which quickly destroy all myths about the ideal uniformity of backlighting on monitors of this (and not only) kind. If you heard somewhere that poor backlight uniformity is exclusively a feature of IPS solutions, then you should know. you were lied to.
Now let’s move on to considering the uniformity of color temperature over the entire screen area.
When testing, we used manual CG settings to obtain 6500K, the brightness of the white field at the center point was maintained at 100 nits. The result of 1.6% on average and 3.9% at the maximum is an excellent result not only for our experimental, but also the result that many other manufacturers should strive for.
The difference between the minimum and maximum did not exceed 266K, and the color temperature of our specimen seemed to be divided into two zones, which can be clearly seen from the surface diagram above. However, due to such small deviations, this situation will definitely not create any discomfort. Sharply darkened edges are much more dangerous. they can be annoying, but such uniformity of the CG is definitely not.
Color quality assessment
The real gamma curve depends on the selected value in the Gamma list (the values of the indicators of the approximating function are given in parentheses in the captions, in the same place. the coefficient of determination):
When Dynamic Brightness is enabled, the gamma curve dynamically adjusts to the displayed image. The real gamma curve is closest to the standard one when choosing option 2.2, so then we measured the brightness of 256 shades of gray (from 0, 0, 0 to 255, 255, 255) at this value. The graph below shows the increase (not an absolute value!) In brightness between adjacent semitones:
On average, the increase in brightness is more or less uniform. over, each next shade is significantly brighter than the previous one, even in the dark area:
The approximation of the resulting gamma curve gave an exponent of 2.14, which is close to the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve deviates slightly from the approximating power function:
Additional adjustment of BlackLevel can raise the black level, which will lead to a decrease in contrast, but also improve the visibility of details in the shadows.
The color gamut is noticeably wider than sRGB and is close to DCI:
As a result, the colors of normal output-oriented images on devices with sRGB coverage appear slightly oversaturated. However, for a gaming monitor, this is hardly a significant drawback. As a last resort, you can try to lower the saturation of colors with the Saturation setting.
Below is the spectrum for the white field (white line) superimposed on the spectra of the red, green and blue fields (lines of the corresponding colors):
It can be assumed that a blue emitter and green and red phosphors are used in the backlight LEDs, while the so-called quantum dots are used in the red phosphor (and maybe in the green one). Good component separation allows for a wide color gamut.
The color balance in the case of the Standard profile for the Color Temperature setting is acceptable. However, we tried to manually adjust the colors by adjusting the gain of the three primary colors. The graphs below show the color temperature in different parts of the gray scale and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (parameter ΔE) in the case of the Standard variant, after manual correction (48/50/48 for the R / G / B values):
The range closest to black can be disregarded, since the color rendition is not so important in it, and the error in measuring the color characteristics is high. Manual correction brought the color temperature closer to the standard 6500 K, but the ΔE value increased on average. From a practical point of view and taking into account the gaming purpose of the monitor, there is no special need for such a correction, you can leave the Standard profile.
The monitor has four full-size digital inputs: a DisplayPort pair and an HDMI pair. The input is selected in the setup menu, and the monitor itself switches to the input on which there is a signal.
Digital audio signals transmitted to the DisplayPort and HDMI inputs (the sound source can be forcedly selected in the settings menu, the volume is also adjusted there), after conversion to analog form, are output through the 3.5 mm minijack jack. An external powered speaker or headphones can be connected to this jack. Testing has shown that the output power was sufficient to provide a large headroom in 32 Ohm headphones with a sensitivity of 92 dB. The sound quality in the headphones is average: in the pauses, the noise is not heard, the stereo effect is present, but there is no low frequencies at all, and the middle ones sound rather harsh.

Focusing on the surface of the screen revealed chaotically located micro-defects of the surface, which are responsible for the matte properties themselves:
The grain of these defects is several times smaller than the size of the subpixels (the scale of these two photographs is the same), therefore, focusing on microdefects and “jumping” of focus across subpixels when changing the angle of view are weak, because of this, there is no “crystal” effect.
Menu, management, localization
The power indicator glows dim white during operation, in standby mode it blinks white and does not light up if the monitor is conventionally turned off. In the menu, the glow of the indicator cannot be turned off. If he is annoying, then a piece of black duct tape can come to the rescue. When navigating through the menu on the right, there are hint icons for the current button functions, located opposite the buttons themselves. Menu lists are looped, but overall menu navigation is awkward. The menu is large enough, the scale allows you to evaluate the image below, where the entire display area of the monitor is visible:
When adjusting the image, the menu remains on the screen. this somewhat interferes with the assessment of the changes being made. The menu is originally in Chinese but can be switched to English.
There are no settings that affect the operation of the menu.

What’s in the box?
The box was bulky and weighed 18 kilograms. The diagonal is 34 inches, after all, and the screen is curved. The monitor was packed in polystyrene foam. It was hard to get, but this is a plus, which means that it did not shake during transportation. In addition to the monitor, there was a leg for fastening, instructions, two cables, and bolts inside. All parts are packed in separate plastic bags.

The monitor won me over with its minimalism and neatness. There are only five control buttons on the back, the cords are hidden under covers in the monitor itself and in the stand. Nothing extra.
The screen bezels are thin. From above and from the sides, their width is 0.9 cm, from below. 1.9 cm, they are almost imperceptible. A sensor was installed on the bottom right. He annoys someone, but I do not pay attention to him.
The cable connectors are hidden under a cover on the back. There are two HDMI, two DP and one 3.5mm audio. There are no USB connectors. The plug on the power cable is Chinese, but the connector itself in the monitor is standard, so you can take any other reason, not the original.
The most important thing about this monitor is the image quality. The picture is beautiful, there are no dead pixels or artifacts. The screen does not glare, there is no shim either. You can see some slight bleeding around the edges, but only when the screen is dark. There is a mode that reduces the amount of blue radiation, with it the eyes get tired less. Brightness, contrast and other settings can be adjusted to suit you in the settings menu using the buttons on the rear panel. The menu itself is in two languages - English and Chinese. There is no Russian, but you can understand English.

It is convenient to work on such a monitor. information can be placed on the screen, you can open several programs at once or even divide the monitor into two smaller windows to do two things at once. For designers, this monitor may not be suitable because its color rendition is not always correct. Of course, you can customize the settings for yourself, but there is a chance that the color will still look wrong.
