The laptop has a dark screen what to do

Black screen on laptop

laptop, dark, screen

A black screen on a laptop is a serious and often difficult to fix problem. Failure can be of both hardware and software nature. Usually it manifests itself as follows: the user turns on the device, but there is no image on the screen, and the restart does not give a result.

Screen health check

Check if the rest of the components work. Listen to the device, you should hear a fan noise. The sounds of the hard drive should also be heard (slight noise, possibly slight clicks and crackles).

Perhaps the malfunction lies in the loop through which the matrix is connected to the video card. The latter in laptops is usually soldered on the motherboard itself. For testing, you can connect your laptop to a traditional monitor or even a TV (subject to the availability of suitable inputs). Usually for this, the device has VGA, DVI or HDMI connectors. Connect the laptop with a suitable cable to an external display device and try to start it up. If a picture appears, the matrix does not work, the loop is damaged or the backlight is broken.

Important! In the event of a malfunction of the matrix or loop, it is better to contact a repair shop. Attempting to replace yourself without skills and special tools may cause more serious malfunctions.

Checking BIOS settings

Incorrect BIOS configuration can be causing a black screen on a laptop. To enter the settings, you need to press the Del, F2, F12 or another key immediately after switching on. You need to have time to do this before loading the OS. The key you press may differ depending on the model of your device.

Advice! If a picture is displayed on an external monitor, you should immediately connect it so that you can visually adjust the BIOS settings.

After entering the BIOS, you must press the F9 button. In this case, the initial settings will be set. This will actually reset the configuration parameters. After that, you need to go to the Exit tab, where select Load Optimized Defaults, and then Save and Exit. If there is no picture, after F9 press F10 and Enter to save the settings. After completing the steps, the laptop will automatically reboot.

Reasons for a black screen on a laptop

Most often, the malfunction is hardware, which means the failure of one or more components. But, the problem of a black screen on a laptop can also be caused by a software glitch, although this happens less often. The main causes of the problem include:

  • Mechanical damage. May be caused by drops or moisture getting inside the unit. As a rule, the reason is associated with a violation of operating conditions.
  • Damage to the loop through which the matrix is connected to the motherboard.
  • Lost contact in RAM connection slots.

Software problems are usually straightforward to fix. This requires software configuration, which may involve removing viruses, installing the correct driver versions, or completely reinstalling the operating system.

RAM check

If the RAM strips do not fit tightly to the connection pins, there may also be no image on the laptop screen. The reason for this phenomenon can be shock, water ingress, temperature jumps, etc. Diagnostics and elimination of breakdowns is performed in this way:

  • Complete disconnection of the device from the mains, including removing the battery. After disconnecting, press the power button to clear any residual charge.
  • Complete or partial disassembly of the laptop. Sometimes, to gain access to the RAM, it is enough to remove the small cover on the back of the device. But, in many models, this requires almost complete disassembly. Remember the screw positions when disassembling as they may differ in length, thickness and thread type.
  • Disable RAM. To do this, there are special latches on the sides of the connectors, which you just need to slightly spread apart.
  • Clean the pads on the RAM rulers with an eraser.
  • Clean the connector itself with alcohol.
  • Put the straps back and fix them securely in the slot. Contacts should fit snugly and evenly.
  • Tighten all the screws and try to turn on the laptop.

What to do if your laptop has a black screen

Before disassembling and diagnosing the electronics, you must perform the following simple steps to check the functionality of the main elements:

  • Check cable and power plug. Perhaps the wire is broken or frayed, due to which the device does not receive power.
  • Checking the health of the battery. Perhaps the battery has “gone” into an excessively deep discharge or has exhausted its resource. To do this, it is usually enough to connect the laptop to the network and check if the power and charging indicators light up.
  • If the indicators are off, you should try to remove the battery. Oxides or impurities may be present on the contact pads, which may prevent the instrument from receiving power. Usually these defects are gray or greenish in color. You can clean your contacts with a simple eraser.

Note! Some laptops require complete or partial disassembly to remove the battery. To avoid difficulties, the manufacturer’s instructions must be followed. The battery can be connected not only by means of snap-on contacts, but also by soldering wires or a loop.

If the battery is defective, it must be replaced. Each battery has a marking by which you need to look for a spare part.

Virus removal

The reason for a black screen on a laptop can be a computer infection with hacker software. To diagnose and fix the problem, just run a virus scan. If the original matrix does not turn on at all, connect an external monitor.

Go to Safe Mode. To do this, press the F8 button before loading Windows. In the menu that opens, select Run in Safe Mode. After turning on your computer, open your antivirus application and run a scan. For testing in this mode, you can use software such as Dr.Web Cureit! or Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.

Upon completion of the process, the antivirus program will automatically delete the malicious files or prompt the user to do so. After removing the viruses, you need to restart the device. In this case, it will no longer boot into a safe, but normal operation mode.

Force Explorer to start

  • The first thing to do is press Ctrl Alt Del, this should bring up the Task Manager. If it happens, great!
  • Click File. Run New Task.
  • Type explorer.exe and hit Enter.

Switching to Safe Mode

If removing external devices does not resolve the issue, go to Safe Mode.

  • Reboot your computer.
  • On the lock screen, tap on the power icon towards the bottom left of the screen.
  • Hold SHIFT and click on Restart.
  • After reboot, you will get additional boot options. select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Perhaps instead of rebooting, you will be presented with a screen with 3 options to continue:

  • Continue booting Windows 10;
  • Troubleshooting;
  • Completion of work.

Then click on Troubleshooting, then on Advanced. Then click on Startup Options and then restart in Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Check if the display is set to a different device.

Press Windows P to launch the projection panel.

A Sidebar will appear on the right with a list of displays connected to the computer.
Select the option to output to the current computer monitor

Reinstall the monitor driver. Open Device Manager and uninstall the display drivers:

  • Right-click on the Start button, then left-click on Device Manager.
  • In the Device Manager window, find and expand Monitors.
  • Right click on the monitor, select Uninstall.
  • Reboot to reinstall the driver.

Black screen after logging into Windows computer (no screen connected)

The first scenario that will be discussed is a black screen that appears after logging in.

Disconnecting external devices

To solve the problem, disconnect all external devices and restart your computer. This primarily applies to devices such as a second monitor, projector or TV. If the computer or laptop displays the boot process, then one of the external devices was causing the problem. If the error disappears, then connect external devices one by one until you get a black screen again. After that, remove the last device you connected and make sure the monitor is working again.

Do not use the problem device until you get a response from the manufacturer about the current problem.

Method for Lenovo laptops

Do everything the same as written about Samsung laptops, but set the parameter value to 0xf048.

What to do if the brightness of the laptop screen does not change?

In my experience, I have encountered problems when the screen brightness does not change on the user’s computer (in 99% of these are laptops). Those. the brightness of the screen is either at the minimum and the screen is very dark, or at the maximum and it is not possible to reduce it. There can be many reasons for such a problem and, in fact, there are also a large number of solutions. Someone will suit one of the solutions, and someone else.

In this article, I offer you the main solutions to this problem, which helped me myself when the brightness did not change, and also, which helped some of my relatives, acquaintances, friends.

I note that this problem, when it is impossible to change the brightness of the screen, occurs on different Windows operating systems, starting with the Windows 7 version and on different laptop models. Those. it is already clear that the problem is very extensive.

So, here are the 3 most common reasons due to which the brightness on a laptop may not change, and below I offer 3 solutions to them.

Changed parameters in the Windows registry

There have been cases when the brightness did not change in any way due to the fact that some registry parameters have changed in the Windows operating system.

I offer some more ways to fix registry settings that can restore the ability to change the brightness of the laptop screen.

General method for any laptops

We open the register. To do this, in the Windows search, type “regedit” and click on the Regedit program that appears.

On the left in the window, click once on the “Computer” section:

Now go to the “Edit” menu and select “Find”:

Enter EnableBrightnessControl into the search bar and click “Find Next”:

When the parameter is found, right-click on it and select “Delete”. Unfortunately, I don’t have this parameter anyway, so I can’t show it in the screenshot. But here, I think, everything is clear. Find and remove.

After deleting the parameter, you need to restart the computer and check the result.

If suddenly nothing was found in the registry, then you do not have such a parameter and this method will not help, respectively.

If suddenly the registry does not look for a parameter due to the fact that it hangs (this happens), then the parameter can be found manually in the registry along the following path:

The last folder may also be called “0001”. You need to check both there and there.

And below are the methods that can help fix the problem in laptops of a particular brand.

Method for Samsung laptops

Trying to find the featuretestcontrol parameter in the registry. How to search I described above.

When the parameter is found, open it by double-clicking on it with the mouse:

Write down somewhere what value you have in the “Value” field in the window that opens! May demand to return it back if the method does not help.

Replace the existing value with f908 and click OK:

Now restart your computer and check the result.

The parameter can also be found manually along the path that was indicated above. here.

Brightness is not changed with special hotkeys

If the brightness does not change with hot keys (for example, fnF5 or fnF6), but at the same time it can be changed in the power settings, then most likely your laptop does not have a special application installed that activates the operation of special hot keys specifically for your laptop model.

An example of hotkeys that toggle brightness:

You can go to the power settings (right-click on the battery icon in the tray and select “Power”) and then open the “Windows Mobility Center”:

Try to move the brightness slider in this window. If it changes, then it is most likely just in the special hot keys. But then, most likely, other special hot keys will not work for you, for example, to change the volume of the sound and turn it off, to turn on and off the wireless Wi-Fi network, to turn on / off the touchpad and other similar hot keys.

In this case, you need to go to the website of your laptop manufacturer and download from there a program designed to activate special hot keys for your model. I’ll show you using the Asus N76VJ laptop as an example. The manufacturer of this laptop is Asus, so you need to find the official website of this company.

To do this, in the search box and type “Asus” (1) and go to the official site (2). Official sites of companies, as a rule, are located on one of the first lines in search results, not counting the advertising line.

Going to the official site, you need to look for a section called “Service”, “Support” or something similar. For example, the Asus website has a Service section (1) and a Support subsection (2). In this case, you need to go there.

On the websites of different companies, the sections may be named differently, but the essence is the same.

It is in these sections that we can find all the programs and drivers for our laptop. There is usually a line to search for the desired programs by laptop model. Now we need a model. The laptop model (and indeed any computer) is indicated after the name of the company. For example, Asus N76VJ. The firm here, as already mentioned, is Asus, and the “N76VJ”.

Enter the model into the search box and click the search button:

In the search results under my laptop model I see the link “Driver Tools”. Click on it:

Also, this link (button) on sites may be called “Drivers and Utilities” or similar.

Now, from the list, select the Windows operating system that is installed on your computer:

If this is not in the list, then select either a newer one than yours or vice versa. It happens that programs fit from newer systems to older ones and vice versa.

In the list of sections that appears, open in this case “Utilities”:

Further, for this particular model in question, you need to download the “Keyboard Device Filter” and “ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities” utilities. Downloading is done on this site using the “Global” button:

Please note that, firstly, I showed an example for an Asus laptop model. In your case (if you are looking for a program for a laptop from another company), the company’s website itself will visually differ, and therefore, the screenshots presented above can only give you a hint, give you a tip, where to go / click approximately. In addition, the programs themselves differ for other brands / models of laptops. In this case, I recommend installing all utilities from the corresponding section and all drivers. This will help solve the problem if no program has been installed to work with special hot keys. And you can always remove everything that is superfluous installed, this is not a problem.

Therefore, the above is only a tip, an algorithm, since all firms that produce laptops have their own official website, everywhere there is a support section from where you can download the necessary programs and drivers. The difference is only visual, the essence does not change.

Thus, having installed the necessary programs, you should earn special hot keys for changing the screen brightness, as well as for work and other functions.

Incorrect or incorrectly installed video card driver

The second reason why the screen brightness may not work is the incorrectly installed driver for the built-in video card of the laptop. In this case, the brightness may not change not only with the help of special hot keys, but also through the corresponding sections of Windows. Perhaps the driver was simply installed with an error earlier, or it began to work incorrectly over time, for example, during Windows updates.

In this case, you first need to try to download the latest drivers for the video card (or both at once, if you have 2 video cards in your laptop) from the website of your laptop manufacturer and install them. Sometimes this solves the problem. The manufacturer’s website (company) can be found according to the same principle as described in the 1st paragraph above. And then also look for the help section where you can download drivers and programs for your laptop model, indicate the model and download the drivers.

The section with drivers for a video card may be called “VGA”, as in my example:

READ  Computer does not start black screen cooler works

It can also be called “For a video card” or similar. VGA. this is how the section with drivers for video cards is usually abbreviated on sites.

If, after installing the drivers, the screen brightness began to change, then the reason was nevertheless precisely their incorrect operation.

For more information on what drivers are and how you can install them, see a separate series of articles, starting with the following:

If you do not know anything about the drivers, and you may not even be aware that some of them are simply not installed and because of this there are problems, then I recommend reading the article above and all subsequent ones.!

And here’s another option for drivers. It so happens that several different versions of drivers are installed on a computer, and the last of them works “crookedly”. In this case, you can try to choose a different version.

To do this, go to the device manager (search for Windows and enter “Device Manager” there), then open the video adapters section and double-click on the first video card in the list:

If you have 2 video cards, then we carry out all the described actions first with one, then with the other!

Next, go to the “Driver” tab and if the “Rollback” button is available, click it:

After rolling back the driver, restart the computer and check if the screen brightness has changed.

It is not available for me because only one version of the driver is installed. And in general, this button allows you to switch from a newer version of the driver to an older one. Sometimes this solves problems, including the problem of changing the brightness on the laptop screen.

If this does not help, then on the same tab, click the “Update” button:

In the new window, click “Search for drivers on this computer”:

Next, click “Select a driver from the list of already installed drivers”:

As a result, a list of drivers of different versions that have been installed on your computer will appear. In my case, only one driver is installed and there is nothing else to choose from:

But it often happens that some other driver versions were previously installed on the computer, and then you will see the entire list of previously installed driver versions in this window. You need to select an older driver from the list than the one installed now, then click the “Next” button and install it. After that, restart your computer and check if the screen brightness change works.

If there are, for example, 3 or more driver versions in the list, then you can try everything in turn. After each installation, do not forget to restart your computer and check the result.

And, I remind you, if you have 2 video cards displayed in the list of devices, then try the above steps (point 2) for each of them!

Everything is the same, but set the parameter to f000

Above, I described the main ways to solve problems with changing the brightness of the laptop screen. It will help someone, someone may not be helped by any of the methods, but it’s always worth trying, you definitely won’t harm the system if you do everything as it is written.

Thank you for your feedback 🙂 I’m glad that it helps at least this way (temporarily). I believe that the matter may be in the updates of Windows itself, from which drivers or OS settings regularly fly off.

Possible causes of this problem

Screen rotation on a laptop can happen accidentally, that is, if the user did not specify any special settings, but the image orientation has changed anyway. There may be several reasons for this error: 1. Inattention. The user accidentally pressed the desired key combination on the PC. Very often this error occurs during a computer game. 2. Problems with software. System errors, malfunctions can also lead to an unintentional change in the orientation of the PC.

The user himself cannot return the default settings. To confirm or exclude this option, just boot the PC in safe mode. The orientation of the screen should be standard. 3. Viruses. Malware changes the way not only the screen works, but the hardware as a whole. Therefore, it is recommended that you regularly check your laptop for such dangerous software. 4. “Beta” version of drivers. It is better to download software from the manufacturer’s website.

over, the latest release is always posted there. Verifying that the problem is with the drivers is easy enough. If you cannot change the orientation, you can change the extension or any other indicator. If the drivers are not working properly, the picture on the screen will remain the same. 5. On laptops equipped with an accelerometer, auto rotation is usually enabled. If this function is active, then the screen rotation on the laptop may occur unintentionally.

To solve the problem, just turn off the option in “All parameters”. “System”. “Screen”.

Full Fix: Shift Screen Right in Windows 10, 8.1, 7

Many Windows users report that their screen is shifting to the right. This is an unusual and strange problem that may interfere with your work, but there is a way to fix this problem and we are going to show you how to do it.

Screen problems can be quite annoying, and if your screen shifts to the right or left, you may have some problems using your PC. For example, you won’t be able to close certain apps or access certain functions as easily.

As you can see, this is a rather annoying problem, but there are many similar problems. Speaking of similar display issues, here are some common issues reported by users:

  • The computer screen is shifted to the side. Sometimes the screen may move sideways, and in order to solve the problem, it is recommended to check the screen resolution and adjust it.
  • The laptop screen is shifted to the left. Sometimes the laptop screen can shift to the left, and if this happens, be sure to check the graphics card control panel and reconfigure your screen.
  • Windows 10 screen is not centered. If the screen is not centered, the problem may be with the refresh rate. Just reconfigure the refresh rate and the problem should be fixed.
  • Computer, desktop is shifted to the right. This issue can sometimes occur due to your monitor settings. Use the physical buttons on the monitor to automatically adjust the monitor and the problem should be resolved.

Solution 3. use the image center option

  • Right click on the desktop.
  • Now select Graphics Options Panel Fit Center Image.

After that, your image will be corrected and the problem will be solved. We must mention that this feature is related to your graphics card software and you may not have it on your computer if you do not have the appropriate drivers installed.

Solution 4. Change the refresh rate

According to users, sometimes your screen shifts to the right due to your refresh rate. Apparently this can happen if you are using an unsupported refresh rate. To fix the problem, you just need to adjust the refresh rate by following these steps:

  • Open display settings as we showed in solution 1.
  • Scroll down and tap Advanced display settings.
  • Now click on “Show adapter properties for display 1”.
  • A new window will now appear. Go to the “Monitor” tab and set the desired value for the screen refresh rate. After that click Apply and OK to save the changes.

Keep in mind that you may have to experiment with different values until you find the one that works for you. Several users reported that the issue was resolved after switching to 59Hz resolution, so you can try this.

You can also change the refresh rate or your monitor using the graphics card control panel software. Keep in mind that you should only use refresh rates supported by your monitor unless you want to harm it.

Other ways to control the screen image

Some benefit in terms of solving our problem can be obtained using the “Screen Resolution” window.

To get to it in Windows 7 and Windows 8 is as easy as shelling pears: you just need to click on an empty space on the desktop and in the context menu that opens, select the item with the same name.

By manipulating the “Orientation” list, you can achieve the desired effect.

In Windows XP, the same option is available in the desktop properties window (click on an empty space on the screen and select the “Properties” menu item).

The next way to move the screen on a PC or laptop to the left or in any other direction is to use the capabilities of not the Windows OS itself, but the options of the video card.

When installing a driver for a modern video adapter, we usually install some other software like the video card control panel.

Dig into its options. and you will surely find something there to adjust the orientation. Better yet, just read the documentation for such a program.

The main advantage of a laptop is portability. It can be used for presentations and conferences, for example. For the convenience of perceiving information, graphics and photographs are turned over 90-180 degrees. Accordingly, in the same way, you have to flip the screen on a laptop. This operation can be performed fairly quickly. If the technical capabilities of the monitor do not allow you to flip the image, then you will have to use third-party applications.

Check your graphics card software

If your screen shifts to the right, there might be a problem with your graphics card software. Almost all graphics cards come with their own dedicated software that allows you to customize display settings such as resolution, scaling, and position.

It is possible that some of these settings have been changed and this is causing the error to appear. To fix this problem, you just need to do the following:

  • Open your graphics card software. This is usually the Nvidia Control Panel or Catalyst Control Panel.
  • With your graphics card software open, go to Display Adjust Desktop Size and Position.
  • Now go to the Position tab in the right pane. Now you will see a small box with four arrows. Press the left arrow until the image is correctly centered. Now click Apply to save your changes.

After doing that, the problem with your screen should be completely resolved and everything should start working again. Please be aware that steps may be slightly different if you are using AMD or Intel graphics.

What to do if none of the methods helped

If none of the options for changing the orientation worked, then there is a problem with the hardware. The issue can be resolved only at the service center.

It turns out that you can manage windows in Windows 7 without using a mouse! Why is this needed? Well, for example, if for some reason your mouse is out of order, which sometimes happens, or you connected your computer to the TV in the “Expand Screen” mode, and the screen settings window that was called up did not come out where you expected.

Sometimes there is a different situation, when something happened to the mouse or the buttons controlling the movement and size are beyond the visible border of the screen and the mouse cannot reach them. There is a way out and very simple, we will use the keyboard, I hope you did not throw it away as an outdated peripheral device.

Let’s take a closer look at the keyboard, in the lower left part you can see the Alt and WIN control keys (a key with a checkbox). So, if the window is not open in full screen, and we have just such a case, otherwise all window controls are visible and available for pressing, then by simultaneously pressing Alt Space (the longest button in the bottom middle), you can get to the window control menu. It contains points: Reestablish, Move, The size. Expand, Close.

In this case, we will be interested in the item. Move. We select it by pressing the arrow keys “Down Arrow” and “Enter”, then pressing the arrow keys Left, Right, Up and Down, you can move the window to the desired position on the screen and press “Enter” again.

If you need to move the window very accurately with an accuracy of a point (pixel) on the screen, then while moving the window you need to hold down the Ctrl key (located to the left of the WIN key), then the movement will be performed point by point (pixel by pixel), very smoothly, but slowly.

In what other cases may this operation be needed with a working mouse? Very often on Netbooks with a screen resolution of 600 vertical pixels, dialog boxes containing the necessary button to confirm or cancel an action do not completely fit on the screen, which is very annoying even for experienced users. these same buttons are simply not visible. And again, Alt Space, Move and the arrow to the desired height saves us, and now these buttons are available. It all works from Windows 95 to Windows 8 today (on the desktop, not in the subway).

In conclusion, a couple of Windows 7 “sweets” monitors, experiment. WIN Up Arrow. Maximizes the window to full screen. The shortcut WIN Down arrow minimizes the window to an icon on the active taskbar or returns to its original size if the window is open to full screen.

Here is such a simple lesson for today, I hope that it will help some save time and nerves. And if you want to fully learn all Windows keyboard shortcuts, you
