After reinstalling the system from Windows 8 to 7, there was a stretched screen issue. I decided by going to the official website of the Toshiba laptop manufacturer and downloading the driver for the display, it weighed somewhere 205 mb, it swayed for a long time at 4g. But then the resolution increased on a laptop somewhere by 300 screens and, most importantly, the screen narrowed.

Every user wants to work in a comfortable environment. If your screen is stretched to a non-standard size, you may want to bring it back to normal.

Solving some problems

As practice shows, it is not always possible to successfully apply the above recommendations. We have identified a range of the most common problems and present you with options for solving them.

The driver is not installed on the video card

A fairly common situation that arises for various reasons, both software and hardware. We have already considered it, so for options to get rid of it, check out the following article.

The drivers were installed correctly, but the problem remains

If the installation of the drivers did not bring any results, we can assume that you installed either an unsuitable software package or an too old version incompatible with Windows 7. The utility software will need to be reinstalled. a separate material on our website is devoted to how this is done correctly.

Windows 7

Advice! When downloading updates automatically, you do not have to search and install everything manually, the system will find the parameters it needs by itself. And if the matter is only in the drivers, then the screen will take a standard form.

Configuring permissions using the driver

Depending on which driver you have, follow the steps below.

  • We right-click on the computer table and select the required driver from the list.

Setting the correct resolution

Screen stretching, not related to crashes or missing drivers, most often occurs due to the use of non-standard resolutions by a computer game. This issue is also very common in games that display in borderless window mode.

The elimination of the problem that arose for the above reasons is very simple. you just need to set the correct resolution yourself through the Windows 7 system utilities or using third-party applications. Instructions for both options can be found at the link below.

Stretched Screen on Windows 10. Troubleshooting

If your Windows 10 computer screen is stretched, don’t worry. The problem could be caused by incorrect resolution settings or faulty graphics drivers. Just use the solutions in this post to solve the problem.

Check display settings

The stretched screen problem may be caused by incorrect display settings. Follow the steps below to check your display settings.

Right click on the desktop and select “Display Settings” from the context menu.

Make sure the resolution is set to the recommended level. If not, change it to the recommended solution.

  • Restart your computer and check if the problem is resolved.
  • If the problem persists, try updating your graphics card driver.

What to do if the image on the screen has narrowed and is not clear

Check Resolution / Scaling in Windows

To automatically open the resolution setting settings in any version of Windows. press the WinR button combination and use the desk.cpl command.

    • Resolution (in my example 1920 x 1080). it is highly advisable to set the recommended value for your monitor (Windows offers it automatically). It is also sometimes called the “native” permission;
    • Scaling (in my example 175%). Windows usually automatically determines the most optimal scaling option. Try changing it. when set to 100%, the image on the monitor will be the clearest (but some elements may become too small for perception).

In any case, both the resolution and scaling are selected empirically based on the user’s preferences (well, and the characteristics of the hardware, of course).

Check if the drivers are installed on the video card

Usually, this problem occurs immediately after reinstalling Windows (in some cases, when restoring the OS, cleaning after a virus infection, when changing some hardware).

To check if the video card drivers are installed. open the device manager and go to the “Video adapters” tab. If the driver is installed on the card, there will be no exclamation mark on the device icon (see example below).

The driver for the video card is installed (on the left), there is no driver (on the right)

Also pay attention to the tray. next to the clock there should be a video driver icon (to enter the control panel). If it is not there, most likely you have an “incomplete” version of the driver installed (for example, the one that Windows picked up for you). See example below.

2 ways to open AMD Radeon graphics card settings / clickable

By the way, the video driver control panel also has scaling settings. By changing these, you can adjust the size of the image on the monitor screen so that the “picture” is on the entire plane (without black bars). See example in the screenshot below.

Are the monitor settings out of order?

Pay attention to the hardware settings of the monitor itself. Most models have an option to shift the image vertically / horizontally (for centering and calibrating the image).

By the way, most often, if you reset the settings to default or use the “Auto” mode (see arrow 3 in the photo below), the image will become correct, the most optimal for this device model.

Monitor setup. vertical and horizontal position

Note: Usually, the monitor adjustment buttons are located on the lower right panel.

    Diagnose the monitor

If all of the above does not work, I recommend checking the monitor itself by connecting it to another PC / laptop. Perhaps there is a place to be those. malfunction of the device (by the way, this may also be indicated by the appearance of various stripes, ripples, a constant change in the width / height of the image, etc.).

By the way, pay attention also to when various interference and distortions appear: if the monitor malfunctions, as a rule, they will appear when entering the BIOS, and when loading the OS, and on the desktop, and in games.

Setting up your monitor (PC only)

For desktop users, a stretched screen may appear due to incorrect monitor settings. for example, the software resolution installed on the system does not match in scale with the physical area of the display, which causes the image to stretch. The way to fix such a failure is obvious. you need to configure and calibrate the monitor. One of our authors wrote detailed instructions for this operation, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with it.

We figured out why the screen on Windows 7 is stretched, and how to fix it. In summary, we recommend that you regularly update your GPU drivers to avoid further problems.

The monitor screen narrowed, black stripes appeared. What to do, how to expand the screen?

My computer began to work somehow strangely: the screen narrowed and the image became smaller, black stripes appeared on the sides. Also, the font and icons have become less clear, as if blurred (or shrouded in a “light” haze).

I blame one game that the children played the day before. It has already been deleted, but the image is still the same.

I thought at first that the monitor was broken, but when I connected it to another PC, the image on it is excellent. What can be done.

Most of all it looks like out of place resolution and scaling settings in Windows (usually, this can be fixed in 1-2 minutes.).

However, other reasons are not excluded. Below I will consider in order what needs to be checked and corrected in case of a similar problem.

How to return the computer screen to its original position and restore its size

By default, the desktop image fills the entire screen, is not distorted, is not cropped, and matches the display orientation. However, in some cases, the picture may appear distorted or even upside down. The reasons for this screen behavior can be different, ranging from incorrectly set parameters and ending with hardware problems. Let’s see what you can do in such a situation, how to return the screen to its normal size and restore it to its original position.

    Setting up the monitor

Sometimes a failure occurs in the settings of the monitor itself. In this case, you will have to resort to the buttons that are located on the device itself. There are several items in the menu. We are interested in the one that shifts the picture left-right.

It is enough to select this item and use the button to shift the image so that it fills the entire screen. In addition, there is a picture setting that stretches it around the corners. Sometimes it is she who can help. It is also worth paying attention. is there a function on the display to reset all settings.

It is best to use it, since it will simply return the original state, and it was definitely correct.

Change font settings in Windows 10

On Windows 10, the dpiscaling command will open the Display section, where you will only have access to the scaling setting. To be able to change the font size for specific elements, use the System Font Size Changer. After launching it, mark the element you need by turning on the corresponding radio button, resize it using the slider and click “Apply”. You will need to log out to apply the changes.

While configuring the router, I ran into the following problem. the monitor image was shifted a couple of millimeters to the left. And the cursor also “floated away” to the left, not lingering on the edge of the monitor. over, it was both in programs and on the desktop. And on the right, a black strip formed the same couple of millimeters wide. But what is there to tell, see for yourself (lower right corner and the folder crawling over the edge):

It is impossible to show this in the screenshot, because the screenshot “photographs” the active area controlled by the system. And here it seems that the pixels have stopped working.

    On Windows 7

In the Windows 7 environment, you can expand and narrow the picture on the computer or laptop screen in the following way:

    • Right-click on the desktop and select “Screen Resolution” from the context menu.
    • Next, change the screen resolution by selecting one of the options in the drop-down list; there can be a lot of them, or two or three, depending on the properties of the monitor.
    • Click on the “Apply” button and confirm the changes. As a result, the size of all elements will change significantly, but the quality of drawing will also suffer.
    • To correct this defect, you need to follow the link “Make text and other elements larger or smaller” in the same window.
    • Here, a user who wants to zoom in or out on a Windows computer or laptop can select one of the available options.
    • And click on the “Apply” button.
    • For the changes to take effect, you need to log out and re-authorize in the system; you can do this both immediately after setting up and at the end of the workflow. and returning the image size to the original is no more difficult than learning how to scan in PDF format.
    • You can “stretch” the font on the computer screen or make it smaller on the “Other font size” tab located to the left of the main window.

Tip: a user who needs to “zoom in” to a specific area of the screen can cope without the help of third-party programs. just follow the link “Magnifier”.

Now you need to move the mouse pointer over the element of interest. and a greatly enlarged image will appear at the top of the screen.

Important: you can zoom in / out the screen using the keyboard and mouse. It is necessary to hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the mouse wheel forward. the scale of all elements presented on the screen should increase, and when rotating backward, it should narrow.

You cannot change the image to normal or original in one click. you have to use the wheel until the picture on the monitor becomes acceptable to the eyes.

Another option, suitable for most computers and laptops, is to use Ctrl “minus” to reduce the image horizontally and vertically, and Ctrl “plus” to enlarge or return to the original.

Reasons why the monitor screen becomes narrow

Most often this happens for several reasons:

    • Incorrect screen resolution setting;
    • The video card driver is not installed;
    • Connecting a TV, laptop, or additional monitor to a computer;
    • Incorrect monitor settings.

    Scaling hotkeys

To increase or decrease icons, use the Ctrl Plus and Ctrl Minus combinations. The method is simple, but not very convenient, since it is impossible to set your own step.

And here is a more subtle way of scaling. To change the size of the elements, you need to scroll the manipulator wheel while holding down Ctrl up or down. The drawback of this technique is the lack of a fixed step, which is why you can accidentally skip the desired scale.

You can also expand the screen on your computer using your keyboard by clicking Win Plus. This action will call the standard “Magnifier” utility and zoom in on the screen.
