Where to find memory card in Samsung

Formatting a memory card for use as internal storage in ADB

For Android devices where the function is not available, for example, on Samsung Galaxy S7-S9, Galaxy Note, it is possible to format the SD card as internal memory using ADB Shell.

Since this method can potentially lead to problems with the phone (and it may not work on any device), I will skip the details of installing ADB, enabling USB debugging and running the command line in the adb folder (If you do not know how to do this, then. perhaps it is better not to take it. And if you do, then at your own peril and risk).

The necessary commands themselves will look like this (the memory card must be connected):

  • adb shell
  • sm list-disks (as a result of executing this command, pay attention to the issued disk identifier like disk: NNN, NN. it will be required in the next command)
  • sm partition disk: NNN, NN private

After formatting is complete, exit the adb shell, and on the phone, in the storage options, open the “SD card” item, click on the menu button in the upper right and click “Transfer data” (this is mandatory, otherwise the phone’s internal memory will continue to be used). At the end of the transfer, the process can be considered complete.

Another possibility for such devices, if root access is available, is to use the Root Essentials application and enable Adoptable Storage in this application (a potentially dangerous operation, at your own risk, do not perform on older versions of Android).

SD card as Android internal memory

If your phone or tablet on Android 6.0, 7 Nougat, 8.0 Oreo or 9.0 Pie has a slot for connecting a memory card, then you can use a microSD memory card as the internal memory of your device, this feature first appeared in Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

In this manual. about setting up an SD card as an internal Android memory and about what restrictions and features are there. The process is shown first for 7.0, then for the latest version of Android 9. Please note that some devices do not support this function, despite the required version of Android (Samsung Galaxy, LG, although there is a possible solution for them, which will be given in the material). See also: How to clear internal storage on Android phone or tablet.

Note: when using the memory card in this way, it cannot be used in other devices. i.e. remove and connect it via a card reader to the computer will work (more precisely, read the data) only after complete formatting.

Using an SD memory card as internal memory

Before proceeding with the setup, transfer all important data from your memory card somewhere: in the process it will be completely formatted.

Further actions will look as follows (instead of the first two items, you can click on “Configure” in the notification that a new SD card has been detected, if you have just installed it and such a notification is displayed):

  • Go to Settings. Storage and USB drives and click on the “SD card” item (On some devices, the storage settings item can be found in the “Advanced” section, for example, on ZTE).
  • Select “Configure” from the menu (button on the top right). If the menu contains the item “Internal memory”, immediately click on it and skip item 3.
  • Click “Internal Memory”.
  • Read the warning that all data on the card will be deleted before it can be used as internal memory, click “Erase and Format”.
  • Wait for the end of the formatting process.
  • If at the end of the process you see the message “SD card is running slowly”, this indicates that you are using a Class 4, 6 memory card, etc. really slow. It can be used as internal memory, but this will affect the speed of your Android phone or tablet (such memory cards can work up to 10 times slower than regular internal memory). It is recommended to use UHS Class 3 (U3) or at least U1 memory cards, about ordinary Class 10 cards your phone may report that they are not fast enough.
  • After formatting, you will be prompted to transfer data to a new device, select “Transfer now” (the process is not considered complete until the transfer).
  • Click Finish.
  • It is recommended to restart your phone or tablet immediately after formatting the card as internal memory. press and hold the power button, then select the “Restart” item, and if there is no such item. “Turn off the power” or “Turn off”, and after turning off. turn the device back on.

This completes the process: if you go to the settings “Storage and USB drives”, you will see that the space occupied in the internal memory has decreased, on the memory card. increased, and the total amount of memory has also increased.

However, the function of using the SD card as internal memory in Android 6 and 7 has some peculiarities that may make the use of such a possibility impractical. this is the corresponding section of the manual.

How to format SD memory card as internal memory (example for Android 9.0)

On the latest version of Android, all the steps for converting a microSD memory card into an internal one are almost the same, but just in case, I will describe the steps separately and give screenshots (do not forget that all data from the memory card will be deleted in the process, take care of saving important files) :

  • On your smartphone go to Settings. Storage. And then click on the item “SD card”.
  • Click on the menu button in the upper right, select “Storage settings”, and on the next screen. “Internal memory”.
  • Read carefully what will happen and, if you agree, confirm formatting the memory card as internal memory. Wait for the process to complete.
  • To transfer data (those that can be transferred) from the internal memory to the SD memory card, open the menu in the storage options and select “Transfer data”.

This completes the procedure. All the features of operation and the method of returning the memory card to the mode of operation as a portable storage remain the same as for previous versions of Android.

How to Identify a Fake Samsung Micro SD Memory Card

Features of the memory card as an internal memory of Android

It can be assumed that when an M memory card size is attached to the Android N internal memory, the total available internal memory should become equal to NM. over, approximately this is displayed in the information about the device storage, but in fact everything works a little differently:

  • Everything that is possible (with the exception of some applications, system updates) will be placed on the internal memory located on the SD card, without giving a choice. But the internal memory continues to be engaged: not all data and not all applications can be placed on the SD card.
  • When connecting an Android device to a computer, in this case, you will “see” and have access only to the internal memory on the card. The same goes for file managers on the device itself (see Best File Managers for Android).

As a result, after the moment when the SD memory card began to be used as internal memory, the user does not have access to the “real” internal memory, and if we assume that the device’s own internal memory was larger than the MicroSD memory, then the amount of available internal memory after of the described actions will not increase, but decrease.

Another important feature. when resetting the phone, even if you removed the memory card from it before resetting, as well as in some other scenarios, it is impossible to recover data from it, more about this: Is it possible to recover data from a formatted SD memory card like internal memory on Android.

Please tell me why I can’t install applications, I combined the memory card with the phone’s memory as in the article, but the phone says that there is not enough memory when installing any application.

Hello. Combining does not particularly increase memory if you have a memory card that is the same in volume as the internal one (or less) and if the internal one is in fact crammed to capacity, there may be such errors. Well, some applications can only be installed in the “real” internal memory.

How to enable memory card on Samsung Android phone

It is not difficult to turn on the SD memory card on any Android tablet or phone, more precisely on a Lenovo, Nokia, LG and so on smartphone, but here I will focus on Samsung j1, j2, a5, j3, duos, and if there are pictures, they will be used with Samsung Galaxy a3.

When switching on, check if it is inserted correctly. Make sure your phone supports the type (e.g. microSD. etc.)

Make sure your smartphone supports, for example, 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB otherwise it will not be able to catch it.

If you have Android 6.0, then in comparison with previous versions it has undergone significant changes in the use of maps.

Unfortunately, Google has not explained these changes to users, and they are not as straightforward and straightforward as it seems.

When Android 6.0 detects the format of the card, it offers to use it as memory, which practically changes from previous versions.

This is where we lose the ability to move apps to the memory card (this option was reserved only for marshmallow cards formatted as internal memory).

Of course, after getting root rights, a lot can be changed, it’s not easy to do this in Android 6.0.

If the SD is used as internal memory, this leads to the loss of access to the built-in memory and the ability to store only programs and their data on it (again, if you have ROOT rights, you can bypass this) and SD becomes invisible in other devices (because it is encrypted).

Hope this brief description helps you decide what to do with your memory card in Android 6.0.

If the memory card still does not turn on, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with ten reasons and solve this issue.

Saving Files to Samsung Directly to a Memory Card

Judging by the questions in Samsung, there really is a problem with saving files directly to a memory card via Bluetooth and downloading applications.

In this case, we try to do the following. Go to Settings, go to Memory and select Default Memory. Then we indicate where to save. Done!

If there are no such options on your Android smartphone, then without ROOT rights, it will be difficult to transfer files, and it is impossible to get them in stock firmware (on Android 6).

Also, the impossibility of transferring already installed applications to the SD card may work if the developer did not foresee such a situation.

You can solve this problem with Root rights and installing the Link2SD application. Only if you want to get the rights yourself.

I do not want to describe how, since it does not always end successfully. Yes, I did not fully answer the question “how to enable a memory card on a Samsung phone”, but this is only due to the fact that there is no built-in method, especially in new versions of android.

Where to find memory card in Samsung

Quite often, smartphone users are faced with the problem of lack of free memory on their mobile devices. As a rule, this occurs due to the huge number of captured photos and videos, which take up a large volume and at the same time can carry some value to the user. In addition to the camera, modern games use impressive amounts of memory, the cache of which can reach from one to tens of gigabytes. How to install a memory card on Samsung and partially solve the problem of lack of free space in a smartphone?

The first step is to clarify whether your smartphone supports memory cards. Modern mobile devices from Samsung can be equipped with:

  • separate tray for microSD cards;
  • a combined tray that allows you to install a second SIM card or memory card;
  • extended tray that holds two SIM cards and a memory card.

If your smartphone supports installing a memory card, you need to find a special paper clip in the package from the device that will open the tray and install a microSD.

In the absence of such a paper clip, you can use a needle, which should be inserted into the hole and press down with a little effort, which will open the tray and it can be carefully removed from the mobile device.

Having taken out the slot from the smartphone, we install a MicroSD memory card into it.

The shape of the memory card and the slot for it are designed in such a way that you simply won’t be able to put the card incorrectly.

Having installed it, carefully place the tray back into the smartphone and press it down with a little effort so that it is aligned with the side edge of the mobile device.

How to insert MicroSD card into Samsung Galaxy J5

Modern smartphones support hot swapping of the memory card, which allows you to change it regardless of whether the phone is on or off.

Currently, the most common size of memory cards for phones is 32 and 64 GB, but in some cases you can find microSD cards with a capacity of 128 GB.

Remove apps you don’t use

It is a good habit to keep track of the number of applications and delete unnecessary ones. This saves not only memory space, but battery power. Check the apps that are installed on your device and remove unnecessary ones.

Perhaps some of the applications can be transferred to the memory card. This option depends on the developer of a particular application.

Where is the memory card in Samsung Galaxy

As you know, the smartphones we have purchased begin to work more and more slowly over time. The pile of applications, service files, photos and updates consumes more and more system resources, which leads to a slowdown in the device, the appearance of various crashes and freezes. This also applies to Samsung phones, which are reliable and functional, but also lose in speed and stability over the years. An effective solution to the problem is to free up free space, which can be achieved by transferring files from the phone to the SD card. How to find apps that take up a lot of space and reduce their size

We found out that memory itself cannot be lost, there are always some applications behind it. The question is. which ones, because each one has different ones installed. Therefore, you need to find out which applications take up the most space on your device: open Menu → Settings → Applications or Application manager → Application manager (if there is such an item) → the list of applications will open. Under each application, you will see how much memory it takes.

Test the applications one by one and identify the ones that are taking up the most memory. You need to work with them further.

If you have a lot of space occupied by instant messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber.), Then most likely the memory is filled with pictures, videos, stickers and voice messages. This happens unnoticed, because these files are downloaded automatically. We recommend that you disable the automatic download of these files. Below are the settings for the most popular instant messengers. For other messengers, please try to find similar settings yourself.

WhatsApp: in the list of chats there are three dots in the upper right → Settings → Data and storage → in the Auto upload media section, items Mobile network, Wi-Fi, In roaming → uncheck all the boxes. Also in the Storage section you can see how much space the files take for each contact and delete them by selecting the contact and clicking the Free up space button.

Telegram: in the list of chats there are three dashes in the upper left → Settings → Data and memory → in the Auto upload media section, items Via mobile network, Via Wi-Fi networks, In roaming → move the switches to the left.

Viber: there are three dashes in the chat list at the bottom right → Settings → Data and multimedia → Auto download in GSM network and Auto download via Wi-Fi → uncheck all boxes.

If other applications are taking up a lot of memory, then most likely the memory is being filled with cache. You can try to remove it for each application.

Deleting a cache is not a one-time step. Have to repeat it every time the memory runs out.

Deleting the cache should not, but may affect the information stored in the application.

Deleting the cache should not, but may affect the further performance of the application.

It is impossible to predict exactly how the application will behave after deleting the cache, because the programmer who wrote it might have associated important functionality with it. Therefore, if the application contains some important information, do not delete the cache.

To delete the cache: open Menu → Settings → Applications or Application manager → Application manager (if there is such an item) → select the application for which you want to delete the cache → Memory (if there is such an item) → Clear cache.
