Working with two Windows 10 monitors

Improved windowing

According to the source, the new features expand the ability to organize windows open on the Windows 10 desktop. Thanks to the innovation, the user will be able to drag the window of any application to one of the corners of the desktop, after which it will resize in such a way as to perfectly fit into the environment and not overlap the working area of other already running programs.

In addition, when you manually resize such a window, adjacent adjacent windows will adjust to its new size to always take up the maximum space on the desktop. This feature is configurable and can be disabled in the Windows multitasking settings. It will be convenient to place on the desktop in this way not only the application window, but also a separate tab from the proprietary Microsoft Edge browser.

working, windows, monitors

As noted by Windows Latest, Microsoft is also testing an option called “Snap further away from screen edge”, the purpose of which is not yet reliably known. However, we can assume that activating it will force Windows 10 to place new windows as close to the center of the screen as possible when trying to fit them into the environment.

A similar, but much less versatile feature, Pinning, is still available to Windows 10 users. With its help, it is possible to position two windows horizontally, joint to joint, and the subsequent resizing of one of these windows will not affect the other in any way. To do this, click on the title of the window that you want to pin and drag it to the left or right edge of the screen, then select the second window to pin by clicking on one of the thumbnails suggested by the Snap Assist manager.

What’s new in Windows 10

Microsoft plans to add a number of new features to the Windows 10 operating system that can improve the user experience in a multitasking environment. This was reported by the Windows Latest profile resource.

Planned changes relate to control over the placement of application windows on the desktop and functionality of virtual desktops, in particular when working in a multi-monitor environment.

Virtual desktops

Microsoft also intends to improve the user experience in Windows 10 for owners of devices with multiple displays, according to the source.

The upcoming update addresses the issue of using Windows 10 virtual desktops on computers with dual monitors or laptops with dual screens. The problem, as noted by Windows Latest, is that currently a set of user’s virtual desktops are not tied to a specific physical monitor. In other words, if a user launches an application on an additional monitor and then switches to another virtual desktop, then this application disappears from view.

Microsoft is testing the ability to bind virtual desktops to specific monitors, meaning each physical monitor will have its own set of virtual workspaces that you can switch between independently.

Other improvements and release date

New windowing capabilities may appear in Windows 10 as part of the upcoming major Sun Valley update, the source said. Its release is expected in the second half of 2021, in October or November.

In addition, according to Windows Latest, Microsoft is also planning to redesign the Start menu, and with it the look of Explorer. Changes will also affect a number of built-in Windows 10 applications, as well as the taskbar and Action Center. Changes to the user interface will also include design updates to sliders, buttons and controls that can be found in Windows and programs for it. both in-house and third-party developers.

In early February 2021, CNews reported that Microsoft is allegedly testing a Windows 10 feature that will allow it to find out which applications are using the webcam and whether someone is spying on the user. Insiders admit that this feature could be introduced in the Sun Valley update.

For the first time, the existence of the Sun Valley project became known at the end of October 2020. At that time, it could be at an early stage of development. In January 2021, The Verge reported that Microsoft is looking for specialists to help it redesign Windows 10, which has remained almost unchanged for more than five years as part of this project.

According to Windows Latest, testing of the Sun Valley update should begin in the foreseeable future. Beta testers may have access to its first test builds no later than the end of February 2021.

How to set up Windows 10 to work with two monitors

If you have a second monitor, and your PC has an additional connector for its connection, then setting up the Windows 10 operating system to work with two screens at the same time is a simple task that does not require much effort. Connecting a second monitor can help improve your productivity and streamline the use of your computer.

Configuring Your Computer for Dual Display Mode

If both monitors connected to the computer have the same screen size and resolution, the result will be just the same. However, even when using monitors with different parameters, the system will still work perfectly in the “dual display” mode.

Step 1 First, of course, you need to make sure that your PC has the technical capabilities to connect two monitors. that is, it must have two corresponding ports (HDMI, VGA or DVI, or a combination of two ports of different types). You can check this by looking at the back of your desktop computer or at one of the side panels of your laptop. Then, with power off, connect both monitors to their respective ports.

Step 2 Boot your computer and log in. Windows should automatically detect that two displays are connected, and you should see a Desktop on both screens. In this case, on the screen of the “main” display, you will see icons of all programs, and the screen of the second display will be almost empty. with the exception of the Taskbar at the bottom.

Step 3 Now you need to configure the “dual monitor” mode to your liking. Windows 10 allows you to easily choose one of several ways to display two monitors. Press the Windows KeyP key combination to enter the Project sidebar. Here you can choose one of the following options: “Computer Screen Only”, “Duplicate”, “Extend” or “Second Screen”.

Step 4 The options “Computer screen only” and “Second screen” are quite self-explanatory and speak for themselves. these connection options allow you to display a picture on one or a second screen. The “Duplicate” option is also quite understandable. this mode displays the same picture on both screens. And the “Expand” option turns two monitors into one wide screen on which you can display the whole image.

Step 5 Expand is an option that requires careful tuning. On the main screen, right-click anywhere on the Desktop and select Display Options from the Action menu. Another way to select the display mode is to scroll to the bottom line of the display settings menu.

Step 6 At the top of the display, there will be two monitors next to each other. The first is the main display and the second is the secondary display. On which side of the display the two monitors will “connect” (which side you can go to the second monitor) can be set by “dragging” the display squares left or right.

Step 7 You can view the settings for each display independently by clicking on the one that interests you and then scrolling down. You can change the scale, orientation and resolution of each display to best match the specifications of the monitor if the two monitors have different maximum resolutions.

Step 8 If you don’t want to see the taskbar on both screens, go to Settings Personalization Taskbar and scroll down to Multiple Displays. Then you can disable the taskbar on the second screen. You can also expand the shared wallpaper on both screens by selecting Swipe in the background settings.

READ  Mail stopped working on iPhone

Step 9 Stretching an image across two monitors in Extend mode is as simple as dragging a window — be it a browser window, an application, or anything else — to the “merged” side of the home screen. Just move your mouse cursor and it will slide smoothly to the second screen.

Step 10 Depending on the installed software of the video card (for example, Radeon) in the settings of the graphics adapter, you may also have additional display options for the second monitor. These may include, in particular, Virtual Super Resolution and GPU Scaling. functions that will help you choose the resolution settings.

Taskbar display

Another subtle aspect of setting up multiple monitors is what you will do with the taskbar. If you’re working on a clean desktop setup, the taskbar can be a problem.

To change or remove the taskbar, go to the background settings by clicking the Start menu, typing background in the search box, and choosing Background Settings. Expand the window and select “Taskbar”. Scroll down the page until you see the “Multiple displays” section.

To disable the taskbar on all displays (except the primary monitor), set Show Taskbar on All Displays to Off. If you leave it, you can decide whether the taskbar displays all pinned programs or only the programs present on this monitor in the Show Taskbar Buttons pane.

Setting up a second monitor

Be sure to turn off your computer. Connect a second monitor to your graphics card, and then turn on your computer. Wait for it to display the image. If the monitor remains blank, check the connection.

When you see the image on your second monitor, right click on the desktop and select “Display Settings”.

You should see your second screen in the settings image. Windows 10 conveniently provides this interface so that users can easily configure multiple displays.

First, drag the monitor to adjust the position of the display. If you have a second monitor to the left of the first, but the display settings show a second monitor to the right, drag the second monitor to the left of the primary display.

The Display window allows you to use both X and Y coordinates, which means that monitors should not be placed directly next to each other. If you are confused about which display your computer is shown on, click the Identify button to see which monitor it is.

Then scroll through the list until you reach the resolution. This will be the main setting that you will need to change to get the monitor to work properly.

First, Windows 10 sometimes displays your monitor at a lower resolution than the display. Set Resolution to Recommended (or higher).

If you have an older monitor but are using a newer graphics card, you can also tweak the settings to raise your resolution higher than the default possible.

Continue to change all the options that suit you. Orientation will allow you to change whether your display is in portrait or landscape orientation. Remember to select the display you want to change before changing it by clicking on the displayed image.

An option labeled “Make this my primary display” will among other things make programs display on your chosen primary monitor.

Choosing the right cable

important than the size of your new monitor is the correct type of cable required to connect the monitor to the correct port. Many people confuse one type of cable for another, which can be a serious problem. To set up multiple monitors, you first need to ensure that your graphics card supports multiple monitors.

There are several types of cables you will usually find when connecting a monitor to a computer: DVI, VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

HDMI and DisplayPort. these are newer connection types for monitors, while DVI and VGA are much older. There are many benefits to these newer cable types, newer cable types offer better display of images, and DisplayPorts adapts to all of the mentioned connection types.

Make sure you know the exact type of cable required to connect your monitor to your computer. Acer monitor suggested above allows VGA, DVI and HDMI connections.

Monitors and displays are connected to a PC through a graphics card, otherwise called a video card. The video card handles graphics on the PC, so you naturally have to connect the monitor to the GPU component. Make sure you connect your monitor to the main graphics card used on your PC.

I will compare the possible connection types of the aforementioned monitor with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card.

Above are the following cable connector types, top to bottom and left to right: 2 DisplayPort, 1 HDMI, 1 DisplayPort, and 1 DVI. This means that with this graphics card, you can use a total of five monitors with different types of cables. This way you will be able to use a DVI, HDMI or DisplayPort connection.

If you have multiple monitors with the same connection type, but there is only one place on your graphics card for that connection type, you will have to use devices called splitters.

Splitters divide an individual connection into two separate connections. For example, if you want to connect two different monitors to the same HDMI port, you will need an HDMI splitter.

It is not recommended to use a splitter if you have a matching connector on your graphics card, but if not, a splitter will certainly come in handy.

Setting up multiple wallpapers

To use separate backgrounds when setting up multiple monitors, open the Background Settings window again. With your window open, scroll down until you see a Browse button under Select Image Category. Click the Browse button and select the image you want to use as a background.

Once you have your backgrounds, right-click on its thumbnail. You should see a selection labeled Set for all monitors, or Set for monitor X. Select the one you want.

Everything is fine and good, but what if I want to create a single, extended background image that encompasses all my desktops?

Working with two Windows 10 monitors

When it comes to desktop PCs, one thing is for sure: two screens are better than one. This is especially true for technicians who need to run multiple graphics applications at the same time.

Whether you are a graphic designer, data analyst, programmer, or anyone else, setting up multiple monitors can make your work both aesthetically and practically appealing. Whatever your needs, enabling multiple monitors on your PC is a surefire way to improve productivity.

Monitor selection

Assuming you’re already viewing this with a PC monitor, choosing a second monitor might be easier. This is due to the fact that most modern monitors on the market are both flat screen and high resolution (aspect ratio 16: 9). For example, a simple 23.8-inch Acer monitor can give you crisp 1080p resolution in vibrant color.

Higher price points are usually determined by larger screen sizes and screen resolutions. However, the setup for an expensive or budget monitor is exactly the same. You can even use your laptop as a second monitor.!

Benefits of a second monitor

There are many benefits to adding an extra monitor or monitors to your workstation.

First, the aesthetic possibilities of a dual or triple monitor setup are fantastic. Compared to a single display, multi-display settings allow you to customize different screens according to their different functions and purposes.

You can constantly view all available tools, menu choices and information without constantly switching between tasks. You don’t have to sacrifice any particular feature for monitoring equipment, listening to music, editing graphics, analyzing data, or recording content.

You don’t even need to invest in an ultra-high frequency display to have a decent multi-monitor setup. Most older flat panel monitors can still do their job quite well when set up with two monitors.

Very wide desktop background

To find extra wide desktop backgrounds, simply go to Google Images and enter the keyword for any image you would like to use, followed by the phrase “wide.” Then, on the Google Images page, click the “Tools” button next to “Settings”. Then click on the drop-down menu labeled “Any Size” and select “Larger” and “10 MP” (3648 × 2786).

While this is not an exact science, a Google search should provide you with a large number of relevant high quality images to download and use.

Finally, go back to the background settings and select “Wide Image”. Then in the section “Choose the right one” select “Span”. This is it! Now you know what a single background looks like, spanning multiple monitors.

Working with two monitors on one computer

It is very convenient to use two monitors (or a monitor and a TV set) on one computer, because the desktop area doubles, which means that the amount of information displayed simultaneously on the screens of two monitors also becomes larger. Glancing over the static information field is more effective for the eyes. And if you open two windows of the program or two folders on one monitor, then they will overlap each other, and if there are three or more windows, then it becomes completely inconvenient to sort through these windows. On two monitors. a computer monitor and a projector, having two desktops, it is much more convenient and practical to work.

And with the help of the DisplaySwitch applet, switching between monitors, as well as turning them on or off, can be done with just two mouse clicks, and with a wireless mouse this can be done without going to the computer desk.

Many computer users around the world work with multiple monitors at once. And these are not only some professional designers, programmers or musicians. Many ordinary people prefer multiple monitors, because they are more convenient with them. Indeed, why work at one monitor when you can use several and be more productive, get more value?

Additional monitors allow you to significantly expand the desktop, obtaining a larger screen area for open programs, which can be watched simultaneously without minimizing and maximizing windows. The Windows operating system allows you to conveniently configure work with multiple monitors and almost all modern video cards have two or more ports for connecting monitors.

Setting up simultaneous operation of two monitors

By default, the second monitor will duplicate the main one. There is one more mode. desktop extension. In most cases, this is the mode that is used.

The need to connect two monitors

Basically, multiple monitors are used to get two workspaces, which greatly speeds up some processes. For example, when working in Photoshop, the work area is placed on one monitor, and all the tools are on the other.

Less commonly, two or three monitors are connected to increase the viewing angle in video games, but in practice this approach is more inconvenient. Firstly, the load on the video card increases significantly, which reduces the performance in games. Secondly, you need to use the same monitors. But even if you use several video cards, the image will be divided by the frame of the monitors and you can not hope for a comfortable game.

Connecting to video card connectors

Most video cards have multiple video outputs. Although it is generally accepted that a fairly powerful video card is required to work with multiple monitors, in practice even obsolete adapters can cope with this task.

Look at the back of the system unit and find the video card outputs. A video card can have VGA, HDMI and DVI outputs, and can have, for example, 1 VGA and 1 DVI output. Now we look at the monitor outputs. You will need 2 cables with appropriate connectors to connect monitors. Often the monitor has VGA outputs, and the video card has DVI, in which case you need a DVI to VGA adapter.

Adapter DVI-A 245pin to VGA15pin Cablexpert (A-DVI-VGA)

Step-by-step instructions for connecting a second monitor:

  • Turn off your computer;
  • Connect both monitors to the video card outputs and turn on the computer;
  • Turn on your computer;
  • Make the necessary settings.

In most cases, the system itself recognizes the second monitor and configures it in duplicate mode, that is, it will simply display the same image as the main one. How to change settings read at the end of this guide.

Why use two or more monitors?

As mentioned above, multiple monitors significantly expand the desktop area, making it possible to see more programs at the same time. You can drag programs between screens with the usual mouse movement, as if it were one large monitor with a very large desktop.

When working with multiple monitors, you have the opportunity to place different windows on them and not use AltTab or the Windows taskbar to switch between windows. This is simply not necessary. you just need to look at the next monitor.

Examples of using multiple monitors at work:

  • Programmers who write code on one display and the second contains documentation. In this case, it is enough to move your gaze to the second screen to see the documentation, and immediately return to writing the code. Sometimes the result of work (website or application) is located on the second monitor, which they can observe without switching windows.
  • Anyone who needs to see two documents at the same time. For example, when composing one, you need to look at the other, or when writing an E-mail, look at the site in order to accurately convey the wording.
  • People who need constant monitoring of information while working. In this case, their main working window is used directly for work, and the second screen for displaying information.
  • It is very convenient to use multiple monitors for games, because the surrounding world is greatly enlarged with two or more monitors. Some fans use 3 or even 5 monitors, placing them around themselves in a semicircle.
  • Streamers who need to monitor their activities on multiple monitors, because the main game is running with direct broadcast to the Internet.
  • Just advanced users who want to watch something on one screen and work on the other.

Installing a second video card

The two methods described above are great for work, but in the case of video games, it is better to use an additional video card, otherwise a significant drop in performance is possible. Before installing an optional video adapter, make sure that your power supply has enough power.

By the way, given the cost of an additional video card, monitor and power supply, you should consider buying one gaming monitor, which will allow you to achieve a more comfortable game.

Before buying a second graphics card, make sure you have an additional PCI-Exp slot on your motherboard.

  • Disconnect the power supply;
  • Remove the side cover of the system unit;
  • Install the video card and connect the power to it;
  • Connect the monitors, turn on the computer and wait for the driver installation to complete.

Ways to connect an additional monitor

There are three main ways to connect an additional monitor. The first and easiest one is to use multiple outputs of the video card. If your video card does not allow this, then you need to use a splitter or an additional video card.

Possible problems

The main problem that happens in this case is that Windows 10 does not see 2 monitors. Solving it, all possible reasons for such an error are checked.

For a start, it’s worth digging into the settings. The following instruction will come in handy:

  • Right click on the desktop.
  • Select the “Parameters” item from the menu.
  • Next, you need to click “Detect” under the picture with the monitor.

If this did not help, then another option is that the video card drivers are outdated. Then they need to be updated, although usually Tens do not need this. this case is extreme.

  • Open advanced screen options.
  • Select the item about the properties of the graphics adapter.
  • In this window, you need to see the type of adapter. The name of the video card should be entered there.
  • If the main Windows adapter is there, then you need to click on the button with the properties and configure this part correctly.

After these procedures, the monitors should work unless the problem is specific.

Installing two displays is not a difficult task, it can be handled by a user of any level of PC proficiency. You just need to be careful when setting up and connecting, and then everything will turn out easily. And also it is worth choosing the equipment in advance. a video card, wires and displays, which will turn out to be the most difficult task in the entire process of using them.

How to use multiple desktops

Usually, after two monitors appear on the same Windows 10 computer, you don’t need to do anything else. the system will automatically recognize them. But if this does not happen, the problem is easily fixed:

  • Through “Windows P” go to the “Projection” menu.
  • First, you need the option “Duplicate”. Windows will turn on the desktop on 2 monitors by copying it.
  • Then you need to click “Extend”. an empty desktop will appear on the second monitor.

After that, you can move Windows 10 apps between tables using your mouse. We also recommend updating your Nvidia drivers for correct operation.

What to look for when buying a monitor

Higher price points are usually determined by larger screen sizes and screen resolutions. However, the setup for an expensive or budget monitor is exactly the same. You can even use your laptop as a second monitor.!

Is the graphics card / motherboard ok??

Make sure the video output on the motherboard (for computers with integrated graphics) or video card is working. Connect your primary monitor (the one that most likely works and is recognized by the computer) to the port where you are trying to connect another monitor. Connecting a second monitor to another computer can also help determine the hardware malfunction of the computer.

Does your card support multiple monitors?

The mere presence of two or more ports for connection on a video card does not mean that you can actually connect two or more monitors. Check your motherboard user manual and make sure it supports multiple monitors. First of all, this advice is relevant for very old or the cheapest video card plugs.

It happens that a video card supports displaying an image only on two monitors, so nothing happens when a third monitor is connected. I personally ran into this situation when I was trying to connect two monitors to an old laptop. One was identified through an HDMI cable, but the second was no longer identified through the analog video output. In this case, you need to come to terms with the physical limitations of your computer’s video adapter.

Desktop wallpaper when using two or more monitors

  • By installing the DisplayFusion_Pro 3.3 program, you can set a different desktop wallpaper for each monitor. over, several pictures with a specified frequency of their change, and control the windows with TitleBar-buttons, which make it possible to switch windows on two monitors. These additional control buttons are located in the same way as the main window control buttons. The program settings are easy to understand intuitively.

For example, for two monitors it is possible to select a different wallpaper mode and customize the wallpaper:

  • on this desktop;
  • for each monitor separately;
  • if desired, set a time for changing pictures.

In this DisplayFusion window, you can set these parameters.

If you use a laptop as a home computer that has an output for connecting a monitor, and there is no image on the connected monitor, then for it to work, you need to install the latest version of your video card drivers.

Using DisplayFusion makes it much easier to work on two monitors.!
With powerful features like Taskbar Multi-Monitor, TitleBar Buttons, and fully customizable hotkeys, DisplayFusion makes multi-monitor control very easy.
Using the DisplaySwitch applet, switching between monitors, as well as turning them on or off, can be done with just two mouse clicks, and with a wireless mouse this can be done without going to the computer desk.

And for such a configuration. one computer (system unit), two monitors, two independent mice (two mice, two cursors) and two keyboards. there is the Aster program. Everything is simple and clear. 1, 2.

With Aster, you can create two independent desktops on two different monitors using one computer.

That is, if you connect a second monitor, a second keyboard and mouse to the computer and install the Aster program on Windows 7, then one computer can be used by two people

This version of the program is designed to work in 32- and 64-bit Windows 7. Aster download:
ASTER.rar Yandex.Disk
ASTER.rar Google Drive

The analogue of the Aster program is QEMU. This program emulates the processor and I / O devices for Linux, MacOS, Windows.

The computer must have two outputs on the video card (or just two video cards) to connect two monitors, the ability to connect two mice and two keyboards.
It follows from Honor that when installing Aster on Windows 7:

Attention! Since in 64-bit systems mandatory verification of Microsoft digital signature is performed for all installed drivers, and the ASTER driver does not currently have such a signature, to enable ASTER, you need to import a test certificate into the system and enable test mode. The utility that performs these actions, as well as their cancellation, is included in ASTER (shortcuts TESTSIGNING ON and TESTSIGNING OFF in the Program Files \ ASTER-V7 folder).

The launch of this utility (TESTSIGNING ON) must be done manually before turning on ASTER and do not cancel the installation of the certificate and do not turn off the test mode while ASTER is in the on state. Otherwise, the operating system will not boot at all with a link to the unsigned mutenx.sys driver (I strongly recommend that you provide for the possibility of manually removing this driver from Windows \ System32 \ Drivers from the System Restore Console or from a parallel installed system).

For ASTER V7 x32 (v7x32setup.MSI), the above steps for installing the certificate DO NOT NECESSARY.

After installing and launching the program, the selection of the mouse, keyboard and monitor is made in the program window:

General tab :: Start on computer startup, restart and disable Aster

Numbers 1 and 2 designate workplaces when using Aster.

monitor selection tab for each user

input tab: mouse and keyboard selection for users 1 and 2

sound tab for selecting microphone and speakers for each workstation

Aster control is simple and with sufficient computer power it can be used by two users.

“Bonding” monitors

Check if your pair of monitors is running in some advanced mode. AMD has EyeFinity technology that combines two screens into one large one. In this case, Windows Settings displays one large wide screen instead of two screens. Try disabling all these software stuff, after which the second screen should work.
